January 2014From the Desk of the AdministratorAnother year on the LIFE CLOCK has just passed. Working in this profession for the last 40 years has taught me to value the importance of TODAY. Not much you can do about yesterday except to learn from it. Nobody really knows what tomorrow will bring, BUT you do have a say in today. Enjoy your time when you have the opportunity and let those around you know just how much you love and appreciate them.

On December 2nd at about 2:30 pm Four Surveyors from the Minnesota Department of Health showed up for our annual UN-ANNOUNCED inspection. They spend four days at the facility reviewing records, patient care, the physical plant and every aspect of our operation. We never look forward to them coming and always are glad when they are gone. Nice to have them in and out before Christmas.I am PROUD to report that the Facility and Staff did a very good job which resulted in TWO minor deficiencies from the Health Department. One deficiency was rated at a level “D” which was related to missing ONE part of an initial assessment. Information was there but the particular form was not. No negative outcomes and it was related to ONE resident. The second deficiency was related to oven that needed cleaning. It again was minor with no negative outcome, it had the potential to effect more people thus the reason for a Scope and Severity of an “F”. Both issues easily addressable and already have been. The average number of deficiencies is around 12-14!! The second part of the survey process involves the Minnesota Fire Marshal. We received TWO minor deficiencies related to “fire caulking” around two small, “1/2” holes where Comcast ran wires through. This was fixed the same day. They are very picky, but we always want to remain in compliance.Overall it was an excellent survey and a reflection of the dedicated and hardworking staff we retain. It is also because of good caring leadership and I want to thank all of my staff for all that they do.

The last few years have been very tough for Minnesota’s Skilled Nursing Facilities like the New Brighton Care Center. The recession and five years of frozen rates have been very problematic. The small increase that we finally received this last October was helpful and appreciated. We are continuing to look at ways to be both more efficient and continue with increasing the quality of what we do. We have been making some small improvements such as replacing the carpeting on the North hallway and replacing the Resident Wandering System. We have plans to do some remodeling and painting throughout this winter on the South Side. We may be closing a room down every other week to do some much needed repairs and painting. We like keeping our physical plant in good shape and are looking forward to the planned improvements.Enjoy 2014, tell those around you just how much you love and appreciate them. Get outside and enjoy the winter if you have the ability or sit back and read a good book as it continues to snow.
