Mediating MuseumsExhibiting Material Culture in Tunisia (1881-2016)Virginie Rey, University of California, Irvine

A Decade of TanzaniaPolitics, Economy and Society 2005-2017Kurt Hirschler and Rolf Hofmeier

This book explores the trajectory of ethnographic museums in Tunisia from the colonial to the post-revolutionary period, analysing changes and continuities in role, setting and architecture across shift-ing ideological landscapes.

The book excavates the evolution of paradigms in which Tunisian popular identity has been expressed through the ethnographic mu-seum, from the modernist notion of 'indigenous authenticity' under colonial time, to efforts at developing a Tunisian ethnography after Independence, and more recent conceptions of cultural diversity since the revolution.

This chronology for 2005 to 2017 compiles the chapters on Tanzania previously published in the Africa Yearbook. Politics, Economy and Society South of the Sahara.

The Jesuit Pierre-François-Xavier de Charlevoix’s (1682–1761) Journal of a Voyage in North AmericaAn Annotated TranslationMicah True, University of Alberta

Denver’s Chinatown 1875-1900Gone But Not ForgottenJingyi Song, SUNY at Old Westbury

The French Jesuit Pierre-François-Xavier de Charlevoix’s 1744 jour-nal of his voyage through French North America—New France, Louisiana, and the Caribbean—is among the richest eighteenth-century accounts of the continent’s colonization, as well as its indig-enous inhabitants, flora, and fauna. Micah True’s new translation of this influential text is the first to appear since 1763. It provides the first complete and reliable English version of Charlevoix’s journal and reveals the famous Jesuit to have been a better literary stylist than has often been assumed on the basis of earlier translations. Complemented by a detailed introduction and richly annotated, this volume finally makes accessible to an Anglophone audience one of the key texts of eighteenth-century French America.

Jingyi Song’s book Denver’s Chinatown 1875-1900: Gone But Not Forgotten tells the story of the rise and fall of Denver’s Chinatown interwoven with the complexity of race, class, immi-gration, politics, and economic policies.

L’Administration provinciale sous l’Ancien Empire égyptien (2 vols.)Émilie Martinet, Paris – Sorbonne University, and Paul-Valéry, Montpellier 3 University

In The Representations of Women in the Middle Kingdom Tombs of Officials Ľubica Hudáková offers an in-depth analysis of female iconography in the decorative programme of Middle Kingdom non-royal tombs, highlighting changes and innovations in comparison to the Old Kingdom. Previously considered too uniform, the study rep-resents the first systematic investigation of two-dimensional images of women and reveals their variability in space and time.

In L’Administration provinciale sous l’Ancien Empire égyptien, Émilie Martinet offers an innova-tive analysis of the provincial administrative structures and the stratification of the local elites in the Old Kingdom (2700-2160 BC).

The Social World of the Babylonian PriestBastian Still

Concepts in Middle Kingdom Funerary CultureProceedings of the Lady Wallis Budge Anniversary Symposium Held at Christ’s College, Cambridge, 22 January 2016Edited by Rune Nyord

The second volume of Excavations at Mendes provides results of archaeological work in the temple area and dromos at the site of Tel er-Rub’a, ancient Mendes, in the east central Nile Delta.

In The Social World of the Babylonian Priest, Bastian Still offers an intimate account of the lives of Babylonian priests dur-ing the mid-first millennium BCE by reconstructing their social networks and exploring their daily interactions from an inter-disciplinary perspective.

Concepts in Middle Kingdom Funerary Culture presents a col-lection of archaeological and philological papers discussing how ancient Egyptians thought, and modern scholars may think, about Egyptian funerary prac-tices of the early 2nd millennium BCE.

The Place of the ViewerThe Embodied Beholder in the History of Art, 1764-1968Kerr Houston, Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore

In recent decades, art historians and critics have occasionally emphasized a dynamic, embodied mode of looking, accenting the role of the viewer and the complex interplay between beholders and works of art. In The Place of the Viewer, Kerr Houston shows that an attention to the position and physical experiences of beholders has in fact long informed art historical analyses – and that

close study of the theme can lead to a fuller under-standing of the discipline, the act of viewership and individual works of art. Simultaneously atten-tive to historical ideas and contemporary scholar-ship, this book identifies a vein of thought that has been generally overlooked, and proposes new ways of seeing familiar works and traditions.

READERSHIP: Art historians, art critics, graduate students, educated laymen.

Conceptualism and MaterialityMatters of Art and PoliticsEdited by Christian Berger, The Courtauld Institute of Art, London

Thinking Bodies – Shaping HandsHandeling in Art and Theory of the late RembrandtistsYannis Hadjinicolaou, University of Hamburg

Holy Ground: Where Art and Text MeetStudies in the Cultural History of IndiaHans Teye Bakker, University of Groningen

Underscores the significance of materials and materiality within Conceptual art and conceptual-ism more broadly. It challenges the notion of conceptualism as an idea-centered, anti-material-ist enterprise, and highlights the political implications thereof.

This book by Yannis Hadjinicolaou offers an account of the term Handeling in the Netherlandish art and theory of the late Rembrandists (like Arent de Gelder) and hence between 1650 and 1720.

The selected and revised articles in this volume by Hans Bakker deal with Indian culture, religion and history: Hinduism, epigra-phy, archaeology, iconography in combination with Sanskrit textual studies. The studies focus on the Skandapurana, Vakataka—Gupta history, Ramtek (Ramagiri), Mansar, Ayodhya, Benares, pilgrimage and holy places (tirtha).

Dharma and PunyaBuddhist Ritual Art of NepalJinah Kim, Harvard University, USA, and Todd Lewis, College of the Holy Cross, USA

This is the first monograph in English dedicated to the life and oeuvre of Japanese etching artist Tanaka Ryohei (1933). His refined technique has resulted in beauti-ful images of the Japanese rural landscape, which have found their way to many museum col-lections throughout the world.

Dharma and Puṇya explores the centrality of ritual practices and the agency of people – patrons, ritual specialists, devotees – in creat-ing and amplifying the efficacy of Buddhist art. Jinah Kim and Todd Lewis highlight the unparalleled contributions of Nepal’s artisans, patrons, and ritualists in engendering artistic heritage that is an en-dearing continuation of Indic Buddhist traditions. The publication presents paintings, illuminated texts, statues, and ritual implements from the Newar tradition in the Kathmandu Valley. Richly illustrated with photographs of contemporary rituals, religious observances, and historical examples, the essays provide cultural, historical and ritual contexts in which objects collected in art museums were used, and animate them.

Studies in Armenian ArtCollected PapersNira Stone, Hebrew University of JerusalemEdited by Michael E. Stone and Asya Bereznyak

This book discusses the cel-ebrated church of the Holy Cross of Ałt‘amar founded by King Gagik of Vaspurakan and built in the tenth century. It analyzes this church from multiple perspec-tives, such as the contemporary intellectual climate, biblical exegesis, historiography, royal ideology, patronage of relics, me-dieval architecture and art.

Following an interdisciplinary approach linking image and legal sciences, Law and Images attempts to outline a research field “Law and Images” in parallel to the well-established “Law and Literature”. It also systematizes images in law, of law and for law.

Nira Stone (1938-2013) contribut-ed to the understanding of medi-aeval Armenian art and painting. Her interest ranged over a mil-lennium of artistic expression, and over such fields of creativity as manuscript painting, frescos, and mosaics. The volume con-tains her published papers and one made newly public.

Travelling PastsThe Politics of Cultural Heritage in the Indian Ocean WorldEdited by Burkhard Schnepel, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, and Tansen Sen, NYU Shanghai

In Travelling Pasts, edited by Burkhard Schnepel and Tansen Sen, offers an innovative exploration of the issue of heritage in the Indian Ocean world. This collection of essays demonstrates how the heritagization of the past has played a vital role in processes and strategies related to the making of socio-cultural identities, the establishing of political legitimacies, and the pursuit of economic and geopolitical gains. The contributions range from those dealing with the impact of UNESCO’s

World Heritage Convention in the Indian Ocean world as a whole to those that address the politics of cultural heritage in various distinct maritime sites such as Zanzibar, Mayotte, Cape Town, the Maldives, Calcutta and Penang. Also examined are the Maritime Silk Road and the Project Mausam initiatives of the Chinese and Indian governments respectively. The volume is an important contribu-tion to the transdisciplinary fields on Indian Ocean Studies.

READERSHIP: This volume is of interest to scholars and students in the fields of Indian Ocean Studies, Heritage Studies, and Tourism Studies, especially those concerned with historical, social anthropological, geographical and archaeological perspectives.

In Diamond Sutra Narratives, Chiew Hui Ho explores Diamond Sutra devotion and its impact on medieval Chinese religiosity, uncovering the complex social history of Tang lay Buddhism through the laity’s production of parasutraic narratives and texts.

This volume explores Chinese poetic modernism from its origins in the 1920s through 21st century manifestations. Modernisms as a title reflects the full complexity of the ideas and forms which can be associated with this literary-historical term.

The Ebb and Flow of Chinese PetroleumA Story Told by a WitnessMao Huahe

This book presents exciting new research from a diverse group of China-based social scientists. Each chapter offers exciting new data and fresh insights on a broad variety of essential topics in contemporary urban politics and society.

The articles by Henk Bodewitz collected in this volume, pub-lished between 1969 and 2013, deal with Vedic cosmology and ethics on basis of a systematic philological study of early Vedic texts, from the Ṛgveda to vari-ous Brāhmanas, Āranyakas and Upaniṣads.

In The Ebb and Flow of Chinese Petroleum, the author Huahe Mao breaks with the official gov-ernment narrative concerning the Chinese petroleum industry and provides the true story as he personally experienced it.

Chinese Research Perspectives on the Environment, Volume 9Edited by LIU Jianqiang, Chinadialogue

In Urban Modernities, Jina E. Kim offers a new understanding of Japanese colonial legacy in Korea and Taiwan through a relational study of modernist literature and urban aesthetics from the late colonial period.

As did previous volumes in this series, this volume reviews recent developments in popula-tion- and employment-related issues in China. Special attention is given to the universal two-child policy, and challenges fac-ing women in the workforce and highly-educated single women.

This volume of the Chinese Research Perspectives on the Environment series is a trans-lation of selections from the 2015 or the 10th edition of the Annual Report on Environment Development of China.

The Old Testament in Syriac according to the Peshiṭta VersionPart III Fasc. 2. Jeremiah – Lamentations – Epistle of Jeremiah – Epistle of Baruch – BaruchEdited on Behalf of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament by the Peshitta Institute, AmsterdamEdited by B. Albrektson, D. Dedering, D. M. Walter, K. D. Jenner and J. G. Veldman

The Peshitta, the Syriac translation of the Old Testament, is an important source for our knowl-edge of the text of the Old Testament. Its language is also of great interest to linguists. Moreover, as Bible of the Syriac Churches it is used in sermons, commentaries, poetry, prayers, and hymns. The present edition, published by the Peshitta Institute of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam on behalf of the International Organization for the Study of the

Old Testament, is the first scholarly edition of this text. It presents the evidence of all known ancient manuscripts and gives full introductions to the individual books. This volume contains Jeremiah, Lamentations, the Epistles of Jeremiah and Baruch, as well as the book of 1 Baruch. Only the Epistle of Baruch has appeared before in scholarly editions, which are now replaced by this new publication.

READERSHIP: This primary source is indispensable to students of the history of the biblical text, textual criticism, biblical exegesis, Syriac language and literature, and Syriac Christianity. It will also be of great use to members of the Syriac Churches.

Ritual Dynamics in Jewish and Christian ContextsBetween Bible and LiturgyEdited by Claudia D. Bergmann and Benedikt Kranemann, University of Erfurt

Ecritures digitalesDigital Writing, Digital ScripturesClaire Clivaz, Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics

In the past decades, the dynam-ics of rituals has been a pro-ductive topic of research. This volume investigates questions surrounding the ritual dynamics in (holy) Jewish and Christian texts, and cases where rituals of different religious communities interacted.

Ecritures digitales aims to dem-onstrate how digital writing, as new technology, contributes to the emergence of a reconfigured relationship between the human body and the machines, and how this transition influences the Jewish-Christian textual corpus referred to as “the Scriptures”.

History, Biography, and the Genre of Luke-ActsAn Exploration of Literary Divergence in Greek Narrative DiscourseAndrew W. Pitts

Biblical Interpretation and African Traditional ReligionCross-Cultural and Community Readings in Owamboland, NamibiaHelen C. John, University of Exeter, UK

In Esther in Diaspora, Tsaurayi Kudakwashe Mapfeka utilises a theory-nuanced concept of diaspora to offer a new way of reading Esther, in the process, critiquing the traditional view that has relied on its close asso-ciation with Purim.

Most studies of the genre of Luke-Acts underestimate the role of literary divergence in genre analysis. This monograph will show how attention to literary divergence may bring resolu-tion to the increasingly complex discussions of the genre(s) of Luke-Acts.

In Biblical Interpretation and African Traditional Religion, Helen C. John juxtaposes grass-roots biblical interpretations from Owamboland, Namibia, with professional interpretations of selected New Testament texts, effectively demonstrating the capacity of grassroots interpreta-tions to destabilise, challenge and nuance dominant profes-sional interpretations.

Negotiating Conflict and Controversy in the Early Modern Book WorldEdited by Alexander S. Wilkinson, University College Dublin, and Graeme J. Kemp, St Andrews

The early modern European book world was con-fronted with many crises and controversies. Some conflicts were of such monumental scale that they wrought significant reconfigurations of the trade. Others were more quotidian in nature – evidence of the intensely competitive and at times predatory nature of the industry. How publishing negotiated and responded to the various crises, conflicts and

disputes of the age is explored by the rich and var-ied interdisciplinary contributions in this volume. To succeed in the business of books, printers and publishers needed to seize the advantage in the of-ten complex environments in which they operated. What was required was determination, resilience, and inventiveness, even in the most challenging of times.

READERSHIP: Historians of print, media history, and conflict studies, bibliographers, librarians, and anyone with broad interests in early modern culture and literature.

Moving Women Moving Objects (400–1500)Edited by Tracy Chapman Hamilton, Virginia Commonwealth University and Mariah Proctor-Tiffany, California State University

This volume is a pioneer study focused on a corpus of 89 frag-ments of exquisitely illuminated manuscripts that were produced under the patronage of the Turkic-speaking Uygurs in the Turfan region of East Central Asia between the 8th and 11th centuries CE.

After covering the Dutch VOC manuscript charts on vellum in Sailing for the East, the printed charts on vellum by commercial Amsterdam chart-publishers cried out for scrutiny as well. Sailing Across the World’s Oceans discusses these rare remaining charts, of which some 150 copies could be traced, mostly kept in international institutions.

The present collection forges new ground in the discussion of aristocratic and royal women, their relationships with their objects, and how they, through this material record, navigated the often-disparate spaces of Byzantium, Eastern, and Western Europe from 400 to 1500.

READERSHIP: Academic libraries, institutes, researchers, students.

READERSHIP: All interested in maps, printed charts on vellum, Amsterdam chart-publishers, navigation techniques, map production and distribution in Europe.

READERSHIP: All interested in the history of women of the medieval and early modern era, patronage and movement of the material record, and spatial-ity of Byzantium, Eastern, and Western Europe.

The Jewish Calendar Controversy of 921/2 CESacha Stern, University College London

Revenge, Agency, and Identity from European Drama to Asian FilmAgents of VengeanceEric Dodson-Robinson, West Chester University of Pennsylvania

Building the Canon through the ClassicsImitation and Variation in Renaissance Italy (1350-1580)Edited by Eloisa Morra, University of Toronto

In 921/2, the Jews of Palestine and Babylonia disagreed about the calendar, and celebrated their festivals, through two years, on different dates. Sacha Stern re-edits the texts from the Cairo Genizah, contributes new dis-coveries, and revises entirely the history of the controversy.

Eric Dodson-Robinson’s Revenge, Agency, and Identity from European Drama to Asian Film challenges critical readings that downplay agency. From Attic tragedy, through Seneca and Shakespeare, and into Japanese and Korean film, the book pur-sues the agent of vengeance: a complex agent who strives for excess, not equivalence.

Building the Canon through the Classics. Imitation and Variation in Renaissance Italy (1350-1580) explores the multiple facets of the formation of the literary can-on in Renaissance Italy through the analysis of its complex rela-tionship with the Classics.

Deconstructing Imperial Representation: Tacitus, Cassius Dio, and Suetonius on Nero and DomitianVerena Schulz, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München

This volume examines modes of political communication between rulers and ruled from antiquity to the present by ap-plying the concept of represen-tation. It explores the dynamic relationship between elites and the people which is shaped by self-representation and represen-tative claims.

This monograph explores the transformation of Berytus and the Bekaa after the Roman colo-nial foundation in 15 BCE, chal-lenging the traditional perspec-tive of Bronze Age roots for the sanctuary at Baalbek-Heliopolis and its deities.

This book analyses the literary strategies that Tacitus, Cassius Dio, and Suetonius apply in de-picting the eccentric emperors Nero and Domitian and their imperial representation.

The Athenian Ephebeia in the Fourth Century BCEJohn L. Friend, University of Tennessee

The Functions and Use of Roman CoinageAn Overview of 21st Century ScholarshipFleur Kemmers, Goethe University Frankfurt a.M.

Cassius Dio and the Late Roman Republic offers new understand-ings of Dio’s late republican nar-rative both as a well-informed historical source and a skillful narrative informed by the rich tradition of Greco-Roman his-tory writing.

This book offers a reassessment of the late Classical and early Hellenistic Athenian ephebeia, a state-organized and -funded system of mandatory national service for citizens in their nine-teenth and twentieth years, con-sisting of garrison duty, military training, and civic education.

How do scholars of the 21st cen-tury understand the functions and use of Roman coinage? What role did it play in political com-munication and state payments? How were these coins used by the heterogeneous population of the Roman Empire?

Partnership in Higher EducationTrends between African and European InstitutionsEdited by Emnet Tadesse Woldegiorgis, University of Bayreuth, and Christine Scherer, University of Bayreuth

Lessons Learned from Novice Teachers presents novice teach-ers’ stories from five countries. They share similar challenges, yet national structures affect the perception of the challenges. A major lesson learned is the need for systemic support during in-duction.

Partnership in Higher Education: Trends between African and European Institutions is a pioneer contribution bringing a compre-hensive perspective not only on the conceptualization of higher education partnership but also the empirical trends that exist between African and European institutions.

Globalization and the Neoliberal SchoolhouseEducation in a World of TroubleJohn L. Lyons, Kyiv International School

The Handbook of Dewey’s Educational Theory and PracticeEdited by Charles L. Lowery and Patrick M. Jenlink

Research and Development in School: Grounded in Cultural Historical Activity Theory intends to give student teachers, teach-ers and school leaders research knowledge about which meth-odologies (research approaches) and methods (data collection and analysis methods) they can use as tools when researching the day-to-day affairs of school and classroom practice.

Globalization and the Neo Liberal Schoolhouse unpacks the com-plex interdependencies between downsizing and decay in con-temporary systems of public education on the one hand, and the ideological and institutional drivers of neo liberal globaliza-tion on the other.

The Handbook of Dewey’s Educational Theory and Practice provides a comprehensive, acces-sible, richly theoretical yet prac-tical guide to the educational theories, ideals, and pragmatic implications of the work of John Dewey, America’s preeminent philosopher of education.

Encyclopedia of Early Modern History, volume 8(Lauda – Migratory Labor)Executive Editor: Andrew Colin Gow, University of Alberta

The Encyclopedia of Early Modern History — to be published in 15 volumes — offers 400 years of early modern history in one work. Experts from all over the world have joined in a presentation of the scholarship on the great era between the mid-15th to the mid-19th centuries. The perspective is European. That does not mean, however, that the view on the rest of the world is blocked. On the contrary: the multifaceted interrelatedness of European and other cultures is scrutinized exten-sively.

Also available online, the Encyclopedia of Early Modern History addresses major historical ques-tions: - which ideas, inventions, and events changed people’s lives? - in which ways did living conditions change? - how do political, social, and economic develop-ments interlock? - which major cultural currents have begun to be-come apparent? - how did historical interpretation of certain phe-nomena change?

Examines the remarkable reli-gious toleration that character-ized Dutch society in the early modern era. It shows how this toleration originated, how it functioned, and how people of different faiths interacted, espe-cially in ‘mixed’ marriages.

In five letters (to Henry VIII and three prelates), a Lucian-style underworld satire on European wars and Turkish aggression, and two translations from Isocrates, Vives assesses obstacles to peace and how to overcome them. Latin texts and first-time English translations.

In this book Lars Hermanson discusses how religious beliefs and norms steered attitudes to friendship and love, and how these ways of thinking also af-fected people’s social identity and political action behaviour in medieval Northern Europe, c. 1000-1200.

This anthology of essays, Northern Myths, Modern Identities, explores the various ways in which northern mytholo-gies have been employed in the cultural construction of ethnic, national and supra-national identities from 1800 to the pres-ent.

In Dante’s Prayerful Pilgrimage Alessandro Vettori provides a comprehensive analysis of prayer in Dante’s Commedia and considers the prayerful phe-nomenon a poetic/metaphorical pilgrimage of the soul toward the vision of the Trinity, while also reflecting Dante’s own exilic experience.

In this volume Marcel Bubert analyses the debates among me-dieval scholastics on the social usefulness of learned knowledge in their specific social and cul-tural contexts.

Set against the framework of modern political concerns, Treason: Medieval and Early Modern Adultery, Betrayal, and Shame considers the various forms of treachery in a variety of sources, including literature, historical chronicles, and mate-rial culture creating a complex portrait of the development of this high crime.

This book investigates the history of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The anthology will help the reader to better under-stand the social dynamics of sci-entific recognition and reputa-tion throughout the 20th century and provide new perspectives on excellence in science and medicine.

Sacrifice and Self-interest in Seventeenth-Century FranceQuietism, Jansenism, and CartesianismThomas M. Lennon, University of Western Ontario

This study is dedicated to the constructions of “national”, regional/ local antiquities in early modern Europe, 1500-1700, especially the Northern Low Countries.

Alisa van de Haar sheds new light on the debates regarding the form and status of the ver-nacular in the early modern Low Countries, where both French and Dutch were spoken as local tongues.

The debate in 17th-century France between the Quietists and their opponents raised the question whether we should be willing to sacrifice the salvation of our own souls for love of an-other. Descartes’s views on free-will were cited by both sides.

ASD VII, 5 contains the second part of Erasmus’ Paraphrasis on the apostolic letters. It is the first scientific edition of these Paraphrases.

Offers the first book-length study of Bruegel’s biblical paint-ings, and argues that they were inherently linked to Antwerp’s religious, socio-economic, and cultural transformation.

Conceived in optimism but baptized with blood, Jesuit mis-sions to the British Isles and Ireland withstood government repression, internal squabbles, theological disputes, political machinations, and overbear-ing prelates to survive to the Society’s Suppression in 1773 and beyond.

In Performance Requirement Prohibitions in International Investment Law, Alexandre Genest proposes the first em-pirical typology of performance requirement prohibitions in investment treaties and the first in-depth analysis of arbitral awards on the subject, which will improve their interpretation and drafting.

Providing extensive documenta-tion, the book examines the me-chanics, trials and tribulations of plundering the Ottoman East for private and public collections in Europe. It helps document the continuing debate about the eth-ics of museum collections.

Offers a systematic analysis of the main legal issues involved in both preventive measures re-garding disasters and their relief phase, with a special focus on major space applications.

Corporate Criminal Liability and Compliance Management SystemsA Case Study of SpainSantiago Wortman Jofre, Queen Mary University of London

Le fondement de l’effet des jugements étrangersGilles Cuniberti

L’entreprise et les conflits internationaux de loisLouis d’Avout

In Corporate Criminal Liability and Compliance Management Systems: A Case Study of Spain Santiago Wortman Jofre presents a case study in which he analyses the regulation on compliance as deterrent for corporate criminal-ity. He also examines the role of criminal justice and offers a view on the incentives to prevent cor-porate criminality.

Between Criminalization and ProtectionThe Italian Way of Dealing with Migrant Smuggling and Trafficking within the European and International ContextVincenzo Militello, Palermo University, and Alessandro Spena, Palermo University

The Critical Attitude and the History of International LawJean d’Aspremont, Sciences Po and University of Manchester

Religious courts in the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human RightsMichał Rynkowski

This volume is devoted to the dark side of human mobility, that is migrant smuggling, and, linked with it, human traffick-ing. Both subjects will be mainly treated from an Italian perspec-tive; however, due to their having a generally transnational charac-ter, the analysis will necessarily require that international and supranational actions/measures also be taken into account.

This book argues that the criti-cal histories of international law must move beyond a mere his-toriographical attitude and pro-motes radical historical critique in order to unbridle disciplinary imagination in international law.

In the 60 years of its existence, the European Court of Human Rights has handled only twelve cases in which a religious court was involved at stage of domes-tic proceedings. These cases originated from a number of European States and the Court came to various conclusions, which are presented in this book.

The Ubiquity of Positive Measures for Addressing Systemic Discrimination and InequalityA Comparative Global PerspectiveDavid B. Oppenheimer, University of California, Berkeley Law

Securities and Capital Markets Regulation in South AfricaA Contemporary ViewC. King Chanetsa

In Addressing Corruption Allegations in International Arbitration, Brody K. Greenwald and Jennifer A. Ivers draw upon their experience in international arbitrations involving allegations of corruption to provide a com-prehensive overview of the key issues that arise in these high-stakes cases.

Positive measures to prevent and remedy discrimination have been adopted in many parts of the world. This book compares positive anti-discrimination measures in the United States, India, Brazil, South Africa, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.

In Securities and Capital Markets Regulation: A Contemporary View, the author takes a critical look at regulation of the sector in South Africa primarily in view of efforts to accommodate international standards, policy considerations, and the transition to a new regu-latory framework (Twin Peaks).

Debating Public DiplomacyNow and NextEdited by Jan Melissen, Leiden University, Clingendael Institute, and University of Antwerp, and Jian Wang, University of Southern California

Neutrality as a Policy Choice for Small/ Weak DemocraciesLearning from the Belgian ExperienceMichael F. Palo

This book is a much-needed update on our understand-ing of public diplomacy. With influential academic voices exploring policy implications for tomorrow, this collection of essays is also forward-looking by examining unfolding trends in public diplomacy strategies and practices.

In Neutrality as a Policy Choice for Small/Weak Democracies: Learning from the Belgian Experience, Michael F. Palo has three main objec-tives. First, he employs a counterfactual approach to examine the hypothesis that had permanent neutrality not been imposed on Belgium in 1839, it would have pursued neutrality anyway until war broke out in 1914. Secondly, he analyses why, after abandoning obliga-tory neutrality during World War I, the Belgians adopted voluntary neutrality in October 1936. Finally, he seeks to use the historical Belgian case study to test specific International Relations’ Theories and to contribute to Small State Studies, especially the behaviour of small/weak democracies in the international system.

Faith-based Diplomacy and Interfaith DialogueScott Blakemore, Bond University

Volume 1 (A and B) of the Yearbook of International Organizations covers interna-tional organizations throughout the world, comprising their aims, activities and events.

The Geopolitics of Cyberspace ex-plores how concepts of tradition-al and critical geopolitics can be applied to cyberspace, the extent to which they can help model the behaviour of key actors and the implications for diplomacy.

Interfaith dialogue is a practice that could benefit diplomatic strategies but has not yet been brought into diplomacy’s scope. This paper uses the theoretical construct of faith-based diplo-macy to recommend interfaith dialogue as a viable strategy within diplomatic activities.

A Concise Dictionary of Novel Medical and General Hebrew Terminology from the Middle AgesGerrit Bos, University of Cologne

The terminology in medieval Hebrew medical literature (original works and translations) has been sorely neglected by modern research. Medical terminology is virtually missing from the standard dictionaries of the Hebrew language, including Ha-Millon he-ḥadash, composed by Abraham Even-Shoshan. Ben-Yehuda’s dictionary is the only one that contains a significant number of medi-cal terms. Unfortunately, Ben-Yehuda’s use of the medieval medical texts listed in the dictionary’s introduction is inconsistent at best. The only dic-tionary exclusively devoted to medical terms, both medieval and modern, is that by A.M. Masie, en-titled Dictionary of Medicine and Allied Sciences. However, like the dictionary by Ben-Yehuda, it only makes occasional use of the sources registered

in the introduction and only rarely differentiates between the various medieval translators. Further, since Masie’s work is alphabetized according to the Latin or English term, it cannot be consulted for Hebrew terms. The Historical Dictionary of the Hebrew Language, which is currently being created by the Academy of the Hebrew Language, has not been taken into account consistently as it is not a dictionary in the proper sense of the word. Moreover, consultation of this resource suggests that it is generally deficient in medieval medical terminology. The Bar Ilan Responsa Project has also been excluded as a source, despite the fact that it contains a larger number of medieval medical terms than the Historical Dictionary.

Secularizing the SacredAspects of Israeli Visual CultureAlec Mishory

Raphael Dascalu presents a detailed intellectual portrait of Tanḥum ha-Yerushalmi (d. 1291, Egypt) – a Jewish philosopher and mystic, linguist and philolo-gist, and a biblical exegete of sin-gular breadth.

The volume presents Avenzoar’s Regimen of Health (from twelfth-century Spain) in its medieval Latin and Hebrew transla-tions from Arabic, together with an English version, and demonstrates in detail how the translation team—one Jew, one Christian—negotiated its collab-orative result.

In Secularising the Sacred, Mishory offers an account of Zionist Israeli artists-designers’ visual corpus and artistic lexicon of Jewish-Israeli icons as an an-chor for the emerging “civil reli-gion,” through a process of giving visual form to Zionist ideas and myths.

A comprehensive description of Tutrugbu (Nyangbo), a Ghana-Togo Mountain (GTM) language. It examines phonological, morphosyn-tactic and pragmatic structures, comparing them to the neighboring Tafi and Avatime, and the dominant regional language, Ewe. It is for African language scholars, documentary linguists, and typologists.

In The development of the Biblical Hebrew Vowels, Benjamin Suchard establishes phonetically regular sound laws comprehen-sively describing the Tiberian Biblical Hebrew reflexes of the Proto-Northwest-Semitic vowels.

Siouan Languages and LinguisticsSelected PapersRobert L. Rankin

This collective volume seeks to approach the practice of language diversity in multi-ethnic urban societies of Austria-Hungary and place it both within its local and its larger European context, and within the broader studies of multilingualism and multiculturalism.

The volume proposes original semantic analyses on grammati-cal aspect, dealing with some less studied forms coding aspect, revisiting or challenging certain conventionalized views on as-pectual categories and shedding light on interactions between aspect and modality, another multifaceted semantic category.

This volume includes seventeen papers by Robert L. Rankin. The papers included here focus on comparative-historical work on the Siouan language family, ty-pological features from that fam-ily, and more specific language descriptions on Ofo, Kansa and Quapaw.

Spaces of Longing and BelongingTerritoriality, Ideology and Creative Identity in Literature and FilmEdited by Brigitte Le Juez, Dublin City University, and Bill Richardson, National University of Ireland Galway

Timescapes of Waiting explores the intersections of temporality and space by examining various manifestations of spatial (im-)mobility. The articles approach these spaces perspectives – in-cluding such as history, archi-tecture, law and literary and cultural studies.

Dans ce livre, Béatrice Didier analyse la façon dont Chateaubriand, dans les Mémoires d’Outre-tombe et autres textes, pose la question de son identité à la lumière de ses pro-pres contradictions.

Spaces of Longing and Belonging contains theoretical and inter-pretative studies of spatiality centered on a variety of literary and cultural contexts. The essays provide a collection of innova-tive scholarship on central ques-tions relating to literary spatiality in a context of increased global awareness.

Evolution and Popular NarrativeEdited by Dirk Vanderbeke, Friedrich Schiller University, Jena and Brett Cooke, Texas A&M University

What grows out of the ordinary? This volume focuses on that which has been regarded as or-dinary and formulaic in literary and cultural phenomena and contests the hegemonic logic of revealing oppression and rebuilding liberation in contem-porary critical theory.

A unique collection of contem-porary book and performance reviews of Joseph Conrad’s three plays, The Secret Agent, One Day More, and Laughing Anne.

Evolution and Popular Narrative argues that an evolutionary ap-proach to popular narrative pro-vides an incisive index into hu-man nature. The contributors ex-plore various media and genres to gauge the interdependency of human nature and culture in our aesthetic appreciation.

Philosophizing BrechtCritical Readings on Art, Consciousness, Social Theory and PerformanceEdited by Norman Roessler, Temple University, and Anthony Squiers, Tarrant County College and Universität Passau

Rethinking Europe offers a selec-tion of essays that reevaluate the Thirty Years’ War by contextual-izing it within the broader his-tory of the Reformation, military conflicts, peace initiatives, and negotiations of war in the early modern periods.

Tracing the figure of Black Venus in literature and visual arts from different periods and geogra-phies, Exploring the Black Venus Figure in Aesthetic Practices discusses how aesthetic practices may restore the racialized female body in feminist, anti-racist and postcolonial terms.

This interdisciplinary anthology unites scholars with the notion that Bertolt Brecht is a missing link in bridging diverse dis-courses in social philosophy and aesthetics—an essential read for all those interested in Brecht as a socio-cultural theorist and theatre practitioners.

Scholarly Personae in the History of Orientalism, 1870-1930Edited by Christiaan Engberts and Herman Paul, Leiden University

By addressing the ways in which entertainment was employed and enjoyed in Ottoman soci-ety, Entertainment Among the Ottomans introduces the reader to a new way of understanding the Ottoman world.

Is Human Life Absurd? A Philosophical Inquiry into Finitude, Value, and MeaningRaymond Angelo Belliotti, SUNY

Questioning the Historicity of JesusWhy a Philosophical Analysis Elucidates the Historical DiscourseRaphael Lataster, University of Sydney

Belliotti unravels the paradoxes of human existence to reveal paths for crafting meaningful, significant, valuable, even important lives. He argues that human life is not inherently absurd; examines the im-plications of mortality; contrasts subjective and objective meaning, and evaluates contemporary renderings of meaningful human lives.

This volume explains the in-adequacy of the sources and methods used to establish Jesus’ historicity, and how agnosticism can reasonably be upgraded to theorising about ahistoricity when reconsidering Christian origins.

Porphyry’s On the Cave of the Nymphs in its Intellectual ContextK. Nilüfer Akçay, Trinity College Dublin

Demonstrates the merits of the dialectical method to understand antiquity, history, culture and philosophy. The book is a guide to dialectics for beginners and a major philosopher’s summing-up of his reflections to a general audience. It is an English transla-tion from the Russian original Дерзание духа (Politizdat Moskva, 1988).

This book offers a unique con-temporary perspective on the interdisciplinary study of time. It will open paths for new ap-proaches regarding narrative structure and urgency. These are themes that are becoming increasingly relevant during our times.

This monograph, exclusively dedicated to the analysis of Porphyry’s On the Cave of Nymphs, provides his philosophi-cal thoughts on the material world, relationship between soul and body and the salvation of the soul through the doctrines of Plato and Plotinus.

Evolution and ConsciousnessFrom a Barren Rocky Earth to Artists, Philosophers, Meditators and PsychotherapistsMichael DelMonte, Trinity College Dublin, and Maeve Halpin, independent scholar

This volume argues that Wittgenstein’s philosophy of re-ligion and his thought in general continue to be highly relevant for present and future research on interreligious relations.

Why Look at Plants? proposes a thought-provoking look into the emerging cultural politics of plant-presence in contemporary art through the original contri-butions of artists, scholars, and curators who have creatively engaged with the ultimate other-ness of plants in their work.

This volume provides a compre-hensive and accessible introduc-tion to the emerging concept of the evolution of consciousness. It presents an overarching model that moves us to a new level of meaning and understanding of our place in the world.

This volume is a collection of es-says whose diversity of insights and methodologies facilitates a kaleidoscopic look at a univer-sally-recognizable cluster of phe-nomena and experiences of fear, anxiety, horror, and terror that often defy straightforward cat-egorization or even description.

Psychology and Religion within an Ideological SurroundPaul J. Watson

Global Religious and Secular Dynamics integrates European theories of modern seculariza-tion and theories of global religious revival as interrelated dynamics. Casanova contrasts the internal European road of secularization with the external colonial road of global interreli-gious encounters.

This book examines the Buddhist responses to the Neo-Confucian critiques of their tradition. It presents full translations of two dominant Buddhist apologetic essays—the Hufa lun, written by a Chinese politician, and the Yusŏk chirŭi non, authored by a Korean monk.

For over three decades, Paul J. Watson has used his Ideological Surround Model (ISM) to pursue theoretical and methodological innovations designed to enhance the ‘truth’ and ‘objectivity’ of research into psychology and religion within the limits of an ideological surround.

Irish Quaker Hybrid IdentitiesComplex Identity in the Religious Society of FriendsMaria H. Kennedy

Religion and EducationFraming and Mapping a FieldStephen G. Parker, Jenny Berglund, David Lewin, and Deirdre Raftery

Beyond the Return of Religion: Art and the PostsecularLieke Wijnia, Museum Catharijneconvent and University of Groningen

Kennedy’s work investigates the hybrid identities of Irish Quakers within a context of sectarianism. Such diverse identities produce organisational tensions. Kennedy argues that Irish Quakers have developed a distinctive approach to complex identity management prioritising ‘relational unity’ and modelling inclusive identities.

This first issue of the Brill Research Perspectives in Religion and Education makes the case for ‘religion and education’ as a dis-tinct but cross-disciplinary field of inquiry. Authors argue for and outline the particular insights to be gleaned about ‘religion and education’ on the basis of their commitment to particular meth-odologies involved in its study.

Drawing from a wide range of theoretical and curatorial insights, Beyond the Return of Religion: Art and the Postsecular establishes an integrated per-spective on the postsecular, to shed light on the transforming place of religion in (late) modern art.

Making Ethnicity in Southern BessarabiaTracing the Histories of an Ambiguous Concept in a Contested LandSimon Schlegel, Loughborough University

The book explores the making of Romanian na-tion-state citizenship (1750-1918) as a series of acts of emancipation of subordinated groups (Greeks, Gypsies/Roma, Armenians, Jews, Muslims, peas-ants, women, and Dobrudjans). Its innovative interdisciplinary approach to citizenship in the Ottoman and post-Ottoman Balkans appeals to a diverse readership.

An invesigation into the manifold uses of ethnicity through the history of southern Bessarabia, a mul-tiethnic region that has been ruled by competing empires and nations, all of which used ethnicity to administer the region’s diverse inhabitants.

Frantz Fanon and Emancipatory Social TheoryA View from the WretchedEdited by Dustin J. Byrd, Olivet College, and Seyed Javad Miri, Institute of Humanities and Cultural Studies

In Frantz Fanon and Emancipatory Social Theory: A View from the Wretched, Dustin J. Byrd and Seyed Javad Miri bring together a collection of essays by a variety of scholars who explore the lasting influ-ence of Frantz Fanon, psychiatrist, revolutionary, and social theorist. Fanon’s work not only gave voice to the “wretched” in the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962), but also shaped the radical resistance to colonialism, empire, and rac-

ism throughout much of the world. His seminal works, such as Black Skin, White Masks, and The Wretched of the Earth, were read by The Black Panther Party in the United States, anti-imperialists in Africa and Asia, and anti-monarchist revolution-aries in the Middle East. Today, many revolutionar-ies and scholars have returned to Fanon’s work, as it continues to shed light on the nature of colonial domination, racism, and class oppression.

READERSHIP: All interested in the history of 20th century revolutionary thought, especially Third World liberation theory, post-colonial theory, and critical race theory.

The Political Economy of the Spectacle and Postmodern CasteJohn Asimakopoulos, City University of New York

Teaching Marx & Critical Theory in the 21st CenturyEdited by Bryant William Sculos, University of Massachusetts Amherst and Worcester State University, and Mary Caputi, California State University

The Rest Write Back interrogates the colonial legacies, the con-temporary power structure and the geopolitics of knowledge production. It exhibits how “writing-back” can pave the way for a “dialogical and pluri-versal” world where the Rest can no lon-ger be excluded.

In The Political Economy of the Spectacle and Postmodern Caste, John Asimakopoulos analyzes the political economy of the spectacle conceptualized by philosophers like Guy Debord through a broad interdisciplin-ary-nonsectarian approach con-cluding every society is a caste system legitimized by ideology.

In Teaching Marx & Critical Theory in the 21st Century, au-thors reflect on, and offer radical arguments regarding, the crucial importance of Marx, critical theory, and critical pedagogy in the 21st century. The essays rep-resent various disciplines while commenting broadly on the need for an engaged, radical cri-tique of the neoliberal paradigm.

Hegel for Social MovementsAndy Blunden, Independent Researcher

Acquiring Modernity examines the modern world’s central fea-tures, from historical origins to recent events. Combining classic models, recent scholarship, and contemporary developments, its topics include science, colonial-ism, class inequalities, education, religion, politics, racism, sexism, the environment, and economic crises.

The “Greek Crisis” in Europe: Race, Class and Politics, analyses the publicity of the so-called “Greek crisis” by deploying critical theo-ry and cultural studies perspec-tives. The study discloses racial and class media biases, and their associations with austerity.

Hegel for Social Movements by Andy Blunden is an introduc-tion to the reading of Hegel for social change activists, focusing a non-metaphysical reading of the Logic and the Philosophy of Right.

Cultures of Uneven and Combined DevelopmentFrom International Relations to World LiteratureEdited by James Christie, independent researcher, and Nesrin Degirmencioglu, Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus

Trust in Contemporary Society, by well-known trust researchers, deals with conceptual, theoreti-cal and social interaction analy-ses, historical data on societies, national surveys or cross-na-tional comparative studies, and methodological issues related to trust. The authors illuminate contemporary issues of trust and distrust.

This book endeavours to show what capitalism logically is all about. Too much has been talked about without its real identity exposed, or even meant to be exposed.

Cultures of Uneven and Combined Development seeks to explore and develop Leon Trotsky’s concept of uneven and com-bined development, aiming to adapt the political and histori-cal analysis which originated in Trotsky’s Russia for use within the contemporary field of world literature.

This article argues the posi-tion that the symbolic sense of community is a product of ac-tion by associations and larger community-based organizations. It draws on a theory from urban sociology called “the community of limited liability.”

On her death bed, Laurel Richardson’s older sister whis-pers a deep family secret about Laurel’s birth. The secret upends Laurel’s life. In this outstanding example of literary sociology, the reader joins Laurel’s search for identity, wholeness, and forgive-ness.

The foundations of volunteering, charitable giving, voluntary asso-ciations, voluntary agencies, and other aspects of the Voluntary Nonprofit Sector (VNPS) collec-tively and individual voluntary action lie in various aspects of human nature and human so-cieties.

This commentary, written from a distinctively Pentecostal perspec-tive is primarily for pastors, lay persons and Bible students. It is based upon the best scholarship, written in popular language, and communicates the meaning of the text with minimal technical distractions. The authors offer a running exposition on the text and extended comments on mat-ters of special significance for Pentecostals. They acknowledge and interact with alternative interpretations of individual pas-sages, and this commentary also provides periodic opportunities for reflection upon and personal response to the biblical text.

The Yearbook of Chinese Theology is an international, ecumenical and fully peer-reviewed series for Chinese theology in English. This special 2018 volume highlights the five-disciplines of Jingjiao theology.

In an age of global migration, what is the fundamental theo-logical framework with which Christian theologians and church leaders are to engage its challenges and problems? In this volume, Ilsup Ahn attempts to answer this question by present-ing a Trinitarian theology of migration.

The original documentary sources of key British contributions to international law spanning the past 100 years are collected for the first time in this unique anthology (set of 4 books). These range from seminal writings of highly qualified British scholars of international law, judgments of British courts, opinions of British judges on international courts and tribunals and pleadings by British advocates; treaties concluded and statements made by the United Kingdom government, British contributions to international legal drafting, legislation and parliamentary debates; to an imaginative selection of other forms of literature.

The Editors’ introduction explains why, of all the multifarious British contributions, these are the ones that have had the most enduring impact upon the development of international law, from a global perspective. The sheer quality in these texts speaks for itself; these are the must-read and must-keep classic pieces for all interested in international law and the uniquely British contributions to it.
