ALPHA RHO CHI IKTINOS CHAPTER REPORT – MARCH 2013 APX 66 th NATIONAL CONVENTION Building off of the success of last year, Iktinos has been hard at work to continue to strengthen our chapter and shape our brothers into leaders on campus. The new executive board has set two goals for the semester: Improve leadership turnover through better documentation of events Strengthen the chapter’s relationship with Taubman College and the many student organizations within it In order to improve turnover, we have setup an online filing system that contains meeting minutes, reports, and event guides. As our records grow, we hope that the chapter operates more efficiently and pushes to do bigger and better things. Our first step towards improving our relationship with the school was taken in December when we appointed a new faculty advisor. Our new advisor, Melissa Harris, is a wellrespected professor within Taubman College and has administrative experience. We hope to use her as a resource to organize events with the school and spread our name. 17 new brothers after a long initiation. Our new faculty advisor, Melissa Harris, addresses students in studio. NEW BROTHERS FALL 2012 In January, we initiated seventeen new brothers from our fall 2012 pledge class, continuing our growing tradition of large pledge classes. Each of them brings a unique personality and great energy to our chapter, and we are really excited to see the things they accomplish in the future. IKTINOS

CHAPTER CHAPTER REPORT – MARCH 2013 APX 66th NATIONAL CONVENTION

Building  off  of  the  success  of  last  year,  Iktinos  has  been  hard  at  work  to  continue  to  strengthen  our  chapter  and  shape  our  brothers  into  leaders  on  campus.        The  new  executive  board  has  set  two  goals  for  the  semester:

-‐ Improve  leadership  turnover  through  better  documentation  of  events

-‐ Strengthen  the  chapter’s  relationship  with  Taubman  College  and  the  many  student  organizations  within  it

In  order  to  improve  turnover,  we  have  setup  an  online  filing  system  that  contains  meeting  minutes,  reports,  and  event  guides. Our  new  advisor,  Melissa  Harris,  is  a  well-‐respected  professor  within  Taubman  College  and  has  administrative  experience.    We  hope  to  use  her  as  a  resource  to  organize  events  with  the  school  and  spread  our  name.

NEW BROTHERS FALL 2012

In  January,  we  initiated  seventeen  new  brothers  from  our  fall  2012  pledge  class,  continuing  our  growing  tradition  of  large  pledge  classes.    Each  of  them  brings  a  unique  personality  and  great  energy  to  our  chapter,  and  we  are  really  excited  to  see  the  things  they  accomplish  in  the  future.

With our busy college lives and long studio hours, we recognize the importance of taking some time out of our schedules to have some fun and bond with each other. The social committee has done a great job of making sure our chapter calendar stays full with opportunities to unwind. In the fall, we spent a Saturday afternoon at Talladay Farms in Milan, Michigan. Brothers raced through a corn maze, ate donuts, and shared apple cider. Recently, brothers have enjoyed outings of laser tag, brother dinners, and ice-skating. Coming soon…bowling, a potluck dinner, and a brother game night.

SOCIAL CHAIR: STEPHANIE HRIT

FUNDRAISING CHAIR: MATT RHEINGAINS

Brothers share the last remaining half-gallon of apple cider in the

entire state of Michigan.

After a year without fundraising, Iktinos came back strong in the fall with a newly established committee dedicated to generating some revenue for chapter expenses. Events included monthly grilled cheese sales, delivering student directories for the student publication office, and submitting innovative ideas to the 1000 Pitches pledge competition sponsored by the University of Michigan’s Center for Entrepreneurship. So far this semester, Iktinos has raised money by organizing 50-50 Super Bowl squares, selling pączkis on Fat Tuesday, and continuing the grilled cheese sales.

first food sale of the year.

PHILANTHROPY CHAIR: ZOE PARSIGIAN

In the fall, our philanthropy committee completed a variety of smaller projects. Activities included donating our time to carve pumpkins for the Leslie Science Center and building doghouses with the Detroit Dog Rescue. This semester, we have tried to find a more permanent community partner so that we can pursue long-term projects. Our search has been a little difficult, but we are currently working on a kiosk design for the University of Michigan’s Matthaei Botanical Gardens. If things go well, we would like to organize a design competition related to similar community design projects and invite all students at Taubman College to participate.

After  our  initiation  in  January,  our  pledge  trainers  quickly  recruited  a  new  group  of  young  architects  and  began  another  season  of  pledging.        We  currently  have  ten  new  pledges  in  training.    A  little  smaller  than  the  past  two  classes,  but  what  they  don’t  have  in  size,  they  make  up  with  enthusiasm.    They  have  all  been  very  committed  to  learning  about  our  fraternity’s  history  and  they  have  completed  all  of  their  pledge  tasks  with  flying  colors.        We  are  excited  to  continue  the  pledging  season  and  plan  to  initiate  the  new  class  in  the  fall.

OUTREACH CHAIR: ALYSSA KARGL

The outreach committee is tasked with reaching out to the professional world, the university, and the local community. They have worked with our Worthy Scribe to organize trips to firms and they are currently reviving the chapter newsletter, Iktinews. In addition to everything going on in Ann Arbor, the committee is also looking forward to planning events with other chapters in the region to help improve relationships between neighboring schools. Some of our ideas are to organize pen pals between chapters and plan weekend trips.

PROFESSIONAL GREEK WEEK APRIL 2012

Last  spring,  we  competed  against  nine  other  professional  fraternities  in  the  annual  Professional  Greek  Week.    While  we  lacked  in  numbers,  we  showed  more  heart  than  any  other  two  fraternities  combined.    Activities  included  powder-‐puff  football,  male  cheerleading,  dodgeball,  trivia,  karaoke,  and  the  Mr.  Professional  pageant.    Some  highlights  of  the  week  include  Danny  Francken’s  emotional  performance  on  his  recorder  during  the  Mr.  Professional  pageant  and  Taylor  Franz’s  Heisman  stiff  arm  during  the  football  tournament.    Danny  took  home  the  silver  medal,  while  Taylor  had  to  be  taken  to  the  hospital  for  some  x-‐rays.
