Grandstand: Production Music Of The 1940sWhat is ‘Production Music’? In simple termsit is music provided by publishers for use byprofessionals mainly in the entertainmentbusiness. Most of it is specially composed forthe purpose, and some pieces may last only afew seconds. But there are many examples oflight music cameos which have becomepopular with the public through theirfamiliarity as signature tunes and in similarsituations where they have been regularlyheard. By the end of the 1940s the productionmusic scene (in those days more commonlycalled ‘mood music’) was well established inBritain, and this collection contains examplesby many of the finest composers working inthis little-known corner of the music business.

A Light Music SmörgåsbordOne of the strengths of the English Languageis its willingness to absorb words from othercultures when a direct alternative does notalready exist. Few English speakers realisehow many of the words they use every dayactually originated elsewhere. Among these isSmörgåsbord which the dictionary defines as“Swedish hors d’oeuvres (another import!) orbuffet meal with a variety of dishes.”Translated into musical terms, it is the perfectword to describe this very varied collection.When thinking of Light Music there is atendency to forget that the Scandinaviancountries also have a fine tradition in this areaof musical appreciation. The likes of Griegand Sibelius are universally applauded:hopefully this collection will add some morenames to this elite list.
