OUR LOCATIONS

ABVI has two vision rehabilitation training facilities:

1 Carriage Lane, Building A, Charleston, SC 294079565 Highway 78, Building 800, Ladson, SC 29456

ABVI also offers virtual training for most classes and in-home and community-based services for select trainings.

A LETTER FROM YOUR PRESIDENT AND CEO

This has been an exciting year of growth for the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired South Carolina (ABVI). This year, we increased our client base by 59% and provided a record-breaking 1,561 hours of vision rehabilitation training. We also added an instructor to our staff who is dually certified in Orientation & Mobility and Low Vision Therapy.

And, for the first time in our nearly 84-year history, ABVI opened a second vision rehabilitation center in Ladson to increase access to our critical independence training and reduce transportation barriers for clients living in Berkeley and Dorchester Counties.

Two short weeks after we opened our new facility, ABVI joined the rest of the world in feeling the effects of COVID-19. We had to suspend in-person training in both our Charleston and Ladson facilities. As a result, we converted our traditional curriculum to virtual training, and we began offering most of our classes remotely. We also launched an educational webinar series with topics ranging from how to navigate the pandemic with a visual impairment to kitchen safety.

Virtual training allowed many clients to continue their training without losing momentum while also attracting new clients who are homebound and/or unable to participate in-person in either location. As a result of the succes we experienced, we are thrilled to continue offering virtual services permanently as another tool to expand access for clients and fulfill our mission.

We do not want to downplay the adversities of COVID-19, how it has affected our clients, our staff, our society and our world. We also do not want the recent crisis to overshadow our accomplishments for the year, but rather highlight how well prepared our Board and staff were to make quick, precise, bold changes.

As our communities continue to evolve and heal after the pandemic, we are looking forward to continuing our work together to enrich the quality of life of the blind and visually impaired.

Sincerely,

Courtney P. Plotner

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT : GAIL

Gail, who gradually began losing her

vision 30 years ago, lost her remaining

sight last year and needed to relearn

how to complete everyday tasks.

Our new Ladson office allowed Gail, a

Summerville resident, to finally access

the individualized Activities of Daily

Living Training she needed.

After losing all of my vision, I was scared

and wasn’t sure how to move forward,”

said Gail. “My instructors helped me

realize what I can do instead of focusing

on my limitations. Through the training

and encouragement I received at ABVI,

I now feel confident managing my

medications, organizing important

documents at home and much more.

More importantly, I have changed my

perspective and now appreciate all of

my abilities instead of constantly

thinking about all I had lost.

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED

NOIR 2021 IS GOING VIRTUAL!

Noir, a blind dining experience, is typically held each January to raise funds for our vision rehabilitation services. During Noir, guests are encouraged to wear a blindfold while eating

their main course so they can experience dining in the dark. This not only gives guests

a glimpse into the lives of our clients, but it also encourages guests to use other senses, creating a unique culinary experience. The evening also

features a live and silent auction.

To keep everyone safe, we are taking Noir 2021 virtual this year. Visit our website for all of the

latest details.
