CTE INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONWhen a program becomes industry certified, it receives a "Stamp of Excellence", which represents the apex of program quality. Onlythose programs that have successfully undergone rigorous reviewsby leaders from business and industry are recognized with thisdistinction.

This formal process strengthens all program components, including:

• Classrooms and labs which are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and technology;

• CTE and academic performance standards that are aligned to national standards;

• In-depth, project-based instruction in all curriculum areas;

• Appropriate and varied Career Related Education (CRE) instruction, including school-based enterprises and entrepreneurial ventures;

• Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) which offer co-curricular competitive events on the local, state and national level and provide leadership development skills for personal and professional growth; and,

NON-TRADITIONAL OCCUPATIONSNontraditional careers are those occupations or fields of work for which individuals from one gender comprise less than 25% of theindividuals employed. Students are encouraged to enroll in coursesthat fit their career goals regardless of the gender make-up in theclassroom. Some examples of nontraditional careers are:

The Work-Based Learning (WBL) programis designed to provide student internshipsand apprenticeships that support a schoolto career transition. Students are allowedto work off campus in the businesscommunity in order to learn more about a chosen career. Once a student has metall application requirements for WBL, theWBL Coordinator will determine thecorrect WBL placement for the student.The students will earn one unit of electivecredit for each completed WBL course.

• Students must have good attendance, discipline, and teacher recommendations

EMPLOYABILITY SKILL DEVELOPMENT (ESD) • Paid entry level work

• Limited to one year

• May or may not be linked to a specific pathway

• Must have completed or be currently enrolled in any related pathway courses

INTERNSHIP • Can be paid or unpaid work experience

• Must have earned one credit in a CTE pathway or closely related academic course related to the placement

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION (CO-OP) • Paid work experience

YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP (YAP) • Paid work in a job classified as highly skilled in business and industry

DECA is a co-curricular marketing organization for students who have a career interest in marketing, finance, hospitality and tourism,entrepreneurship, management, or business administration. DECAallows students to compete and learn about marketing skills neededto be successful in today’s business world. DECA currently operatesin the over 4,000 high schools in many different countries includingMexico, Germany, Puerto Rico, and Canada. As an organization,DECA holds an annual Fall Leadership Conference that sharpens the skills and techniques of the attendees. At the annual stateconference, students are also allowed to compete in a range of areas including Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Apparel andAccessories, Automotive, Restaurant Management, Accounting andmany more. There is over $300,000 of scholarship money fromDECA’s corporate sponsors available to its members. DECA givesstudents the chance to work with real business partners and canopen the door for future employment opportunities. DECA allows its members to grow as leaders who can positively impact theircommunity.

Georgia SkillsUSA members participate in local, state, and national activities provided through trade andindustrial, technical, and health occupations courses and programs. This include drama, communication,broadcasting and graphic arts students. The mission ofSkillsUSA is to develop leadership skills and workplacecompetencies that students will need to success in aconstantly changing global workplace. The organizationprovides many opportunities for leadership developmentand skills training. Competition in over 70 leadership,health occupations, occupationally related, and trade,industrial, and technical contests is offered at the regionand state levels, culminating with the SkillsUSAChampionships in Kansas City, Missouri, in June.

Career Pathways are state-approved career enhancementprograms defined as a coherent, articulated sequence of rigorous academic and career-related courses starting in theninth grade and leading to an associate degree, and/or anindustry-recognized certificate or licensure, and/or abaccalaureate degree and beyond.

Career, Technical, and Education (CTE) provides students withthe opportunity to select at least three sequenced courses in acareer pathway.

CTE CONCENTRATOR: A concentrator is defined as a studentwho takes at least three CTE courses in a specific program areaduring their high school career.

PATHWAY COMPLETER: A pathway completer is a concentratorwho completes the requirements for the Georgia MilestonesAssessment System and also completes the requirements forCTE pathway concentrators.

Selection of a pathway is based on self-awareness and theinvestigation of occupations plus related educational levelsaligned with the pathway. Most high-demand, high-skilled, high-wage occupations in all concentrations still requireeducation beyond high school.

Implementation of career pathways is a collaborative effortbetween the Fayette County School District, the GeorgiaDepartment of Education, the Technical College System ofGeorgia and the University System of Georgia.

OVERVIEW OF CAREER CLUSTERS PATHWAYS

• Georgia’s 17 Career Cluster/Pathways provide a structure for organizing and delivering quality Career, Technical and Education (CTE) programs.

• Modeled after the National Career Clusters configuration utilized by most of the United States, Georgia’s 17 Career Cluster/Pathways Model represents approximately 96 career pathways to help students navigate their way to greater success in college and career.

• As an organizing tool for curriculum design and instruction, the 17 Career Clusters provide essential knowledge and skills for the students’ career pathways.

• This model functions as a:

• Useful guide in developing programs of study that bridge secondary and postsecondary curriculum.

• Indicator of a range of career options for students’ graduation plans of study.

• Method of allowing students to discover their interests and passions, empowering them to choose the educational pathway that may lead to success in high school, college and career.

• The 17 Career Cluster/ Pathways encompass both secondary and postsecondary education and will strengthen and improve student transition from secondary to postsecondary education.

• The Fayette County School District offers 14 of the 17 Career Clusters.
