Jokhang temple was built by the greatest Tibet king Shrong Tsongo Gompo to house the statue of Budhha brought by king of Nepal and his wife. Today, it is the most sacred active temple and a great pilgrimage site in Tibet. The temple is also famous for hosting the prayer flag festival and numerous other fiestas.

With its small shops selling prayer flags and ritual objects, Barkhor bazaar is also one of the most charming site and provide an insight into the multiple aspects of Tibetan culture and its people.

Drepung

Monastery

Located at the foot of Mount Gephel, Drepung monastery was once the largest Buddhist monastery. It was home to about ten thousand monks. Though, after the Chinese invasion, it has lost much of its independence, the monastery was reestablished in exile in India. The most amazing sight on your monastery visit is the debating monks. Today also, it houses many colleges to teach the Buddhist philosophy.

Sera Monastery

Another famous monastery of Tibet, Sera monastery is not as big as the Drepung but it used to serve as home to about five thousand monks. Today, the number have lessened to few thousands. It is dedicated to the Gelugpa or Yellow Hat Sect which was founded by Tsong Khapa.

Gyantse (3950m)

The least Chinese influenced town in Tibet, it is famous for Gyantse Dzong and Gyantse Kumbum. The Dzong offers panoramic views of the Pelkhor Chöde Monastery and the nearby valleys. It was taken over by the Britishers during the Tibet invasion. Kumbum is the foremost attraction of the town. At an height of 35m, it is the highest chorten.
