NEVER LET THEM OUT OF THE BUILDINGDisability management is a proactive process; the goal is to safeguard the employability of the worker while protecting the financial interests of the employer; keeping the worker in the workplace is paramount; strategies are required for those situations when the worker is not capable of remaining in the workplace; both labour and management play a key role in this process.

FATIMAOn March 15, 2o10, Fatima a 41 year old laboratory worker reports at 3 p.m. she hurt her lower back while taking off her protective laboratory booties at 9 in the morning . She phones in on March 16 stating she has seen her doctor and she will be off work for a week or two. On Friday April 2nd she brings in a completed Functional Abilities form and returns to modified work on Monday April 5.

Fatima has been with your company for 18 years and is considered a reliable and conscientious employee. She has missed one or two days in the past 3 years due unrelated workplace injuries.

STEPHENOn February 21 . 2008, Stephen slips and falls @18 inches off a steel platform, landing awkwardly on his left hip on the attached metal walkway. He climbs down from the raised platform and after being checked over by the plant first aid attendant, he leaves the plant and drives to a local walk-in clinic. He goes off work and a WSIB claim is established. In May 2008 Stephen is laid off indefinitely when plant orders dramatically drop.

You start as the new Human Resources Manager in May 2010 and notice the NEER costs of this claim are over $183,000.

On November 9, she informs you she needs a week of just rest. You offer, in writing, modified work which is refused as she states she is in too much pain. She does return to modified work (she brought in a completed FAF) and returned to full duties on December 4 th.She works full shifts but on June 1, 2010, she tells you her knee is killing her and she is going to see her doctor.
