This inner space adventure will allow people intrigued with the allure of undersea exploration to become part of an archaeological team. By joining this program, you will ex-plore Roman shipwrecks laden with ancient amphora that have been lost for over 2000 years. Mysteries of where these ships were going, what they were carrying and how they possibly sank will be researched. As a SubSea Explor-er you will work with archeologists to determine all that can be known about the various finds. Some artifacts will be removed from the sea-floor to be curated and displayed in regional exhibits.

A local expert will escort participants on a tour of historical-ly interesting areas and museums. An onsite coordinator will attend to all guest needs during the week program.

Equipment and FacilitiesAurora Trust has established a cooperative agreement with U-Boat Worx, the owners of the 3 person C-Explorer 3 mini sub, which will be used to carry out the project. The sub is airconditioned, has spectacular 360 degree views, and is rated to dive up to 1000 feet. It is launched and retrieved from the stern of its 100 foot support ship.

The 2015 program will be carried out at Panarea Island in the Aeolian Islands off of the northern coast of Sicily. Here, Aurora Trust has located and identified several Roman or Greek shipwrecks.

The islands are Italian tourist destinations in the summer. They are steeped in history and tradition and are fasci-nating to visit and enjoy. In addition to their ancient ruins, underground cisterns, museums, restaurants, and public festivals, the people make it an incredible place to spend a week or two.

An island villa is being leased to accommodate the par-ticipants. It will be located on the island where the sub is based.

Guests will be met at the airport by a designated driver and driven to the ferry boat that will transport them to their destination island where they will be met by their host. Transportation not included.

All food and beverages, including wine and beer, will be in-cluded. Most meals will be served in local gourmet restau-rants. Lunches will be served on board the support vessel. Breakfast will be served at the villa.

Frequently asked questions

What is the total number of guests per week? For the Villa Program the total number of guests per week: Six (6)

The Private Yacht can accommodate a maximum of 10 guests and they come as a group or family and basically charter the entire week.

Will I be claustrophobic? The sub’s acrylic sphere is constructed from a material which has the same refraction index as seawater, therefore it visually disappears underwater and provides a very open and spacious feeling.

How do I get into the sub?The sub is in the water when you board it. The hatch is opened and you climb down to a foot rest then take a seat.

How far are the dive sites from the island? Most are within 45 minutes from the dock.

How deep will we be diving? All dives will be well within the safety depth limits of the submersible’s rating, typically less than 500 feet.
