    Thank you for buying Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. Neutron Survey Meter. This manual explains operation, the functions and the parts of the survey meter. Please read the manual carefully to ensure correct operation before use. In the malfunction of the product, contact us with detailed information such as the detailed device status, problem, model and product serial number. If possible, enclose picture or diagram to facilitate speedy response. Please consult up before conducting repairs. Failure to do so may result in customer taking responsibility for any malfunction caused.

    PRECAUTIONS

    Read the following handling precautions to ensure that you use the product safely and avoid injury or damages. Read this Users Manual carefully to understand all the precautions before using the product.

    Measures of Precaution

    Caution

    The survey meter is a precision instrument; do not drop it or subject it to impact. Keep the survey meter in a plastic bag for protection when use in an environment where chemical fumes, splashes/steam, full of dust and wastes are present.

    Handle the survey meter with a clean, dry hand. If becomes tainted, clean it with dry cloth.

    Avoid using in an environment with high frequency noise. Pay attention when using near the following devices:

    1. Mobile phone 2. PHS 3. High power transceiver, or similar goods 4. Microwave ovens 5. Radars 6. Welding machines 7. Any other spark discharging or high intensity radio wave emitting devices

    (Especially keep the survey meter at least 50cm away from PHS or mobile phones)

    When the battery level is critically low, immediately replace with new batteries. Prior to disposal of the used AA alkaline batteries, protect exposed terminals with insulating tape following your countrys directions to prevent shorting that might cause possible heating, rupture, or burning. Otherwise, injury or fire might result.

    Do not throw the survey meter or batteries into a fire. Do not disassemble them. In the case of retirement of this survey meter, please contact our sales representative or agency.

    1. General

    This equipment is a portable neutron survey meter to measure neutron dose rate and dose at neutron fields in nuclear facilities or accelerator facilities, etc. Lightweight and high sensitivity have been realized by adopting organic mixed gas counter. Measured values are displayed on the display, and neutron counting can be monitored with beep sound and LED lighting. For power source, AA alkaline battery, commercial AC source(optional), and AA NiMH rechargeable battery(optional) are available. With serial communication function through USB port, transmission of measurement values to commercial PC and trend data measurement are available.

    2. Configuration

    This product is composed as described in the below. Please confirm before use.

    3. Each Component and Functions In this clause, parts names and functions of this equipment are described.

    3.1 Parts name of main body

    Detector body Detects neutrons. Be sure to point the direction to measuring object.

    Display Measurement values and status are shown on the organic EL display.

    Caution Be sure to turn the survey meter OFF, when the display is detached from detector body or attached to detector body.

    Operating pad Switches various functions with the keypad. For each function, see Section 3.2 Components of display

    Power switch Press | down to turn ON. Press O down to turn OFF.

    Battery compartment Slide the battery cover up to open. Remove batteries and replace new ones. Make sure to insert batteries with positive and negative terminals correctly oriented and surely close the component. Refer to Section 5.3 Battery replacement in detail.

    Caution

    When replacing batteries, make sure to turn the survey meter OFF. Insert a new battery in the compartment correctly. Apply only AA Alkaline batteries or Ni-MH batteries. For battery replacement, apply new batteries. In case of AA Ni-MH battery replacement, make sure to apply fully

    recharged 6 batteries. For disposal of removed battery, follow the instructions of your country.

    LED Red LED which monitors the detection count. LED lights continuously in high dose rate field.

    External power supply connector Connect to the AC adaptor (optional). Do not use any other external power supply. It could result in a malfunction or heating.

    Caution

    Recharging has to be done using a charger. When recharging batteries, open the battery cover ( of Fig.3-1) and remove the all 6 batteries then recharge with the exclusive charger. Refer to Section 5.3 Battery replacement in detail.

    USB connector for data communication. Remove the protecting sheet before use. It communicates with PC installed the maintenance software(option) through ordinary USB cable(option). Do not directly touch USB connector to prevent from dirt. When not in use, apply the protecting sheet to prevent dust or water.

    Screw for tripod Ordinary camera tripod can be fixed.

    Handle For holding the survey meter when moving.

    Screw for case cap fastening Use only for maintenance. Do not open the case without unless necessary. Malfunction might be caused due to penetration of exogenous material or water into internal circuit.

    Shoulder belt lugs Each of lugs should be strapped with a shoulder strap (2 positions).

    Shoulder belt Used for carrying the survey meter by attaching to No. 12 shoulder belt lugs.

    3.2 Parts name of display unit

    ENT key Pressing ENT key during displaying dose rate can show screen for setting values. Also, various setting or cancel can be done with the key.

    key Sets various setting values or sets operation status for dose measurement to START / STOP / RESET. For dose rate/ dose display, displayed item can be switched as the following order by pressing the key.

    3.3 Items on the display

    3.3.1 indication of dose rate

    Dose rate value Indicates dose rate.

    Unit Displayed units are Sv/h or mSv/h.

    Battery level Indicates remaining battery power. Replace new batteries when low battery level is indicated. Refer to Section 5.3 Battery replacement for how to replace batteries. Also, recharge batteries with the exclusive charger in case of using rechargeable batteries.

    Dose mark Indicates that dose is under measurement. When the dose measurement is not operated, is indicated.

    Time constant Indicates selected time constant from L, M, and S. For more detail, see Section 6 Time Constant Table.

    Buzzer mark Indicates the count monitor sound is ON/OFF.

    Clock display Indicates that the time is indicated on the No. 8 in the above figure.

    Clock Indicates present time (hour: min: sec).

    Communication error Indicates there is a communication error between display and detector base plate. For details of error code, refer to Section 9.1 Error code.

    Dose mark Indicates that dose is under measurement. When the dose measurement is not operated, || is indicated.

    4. Operation

    This chapter explains operation flows. Function of display and operation are categorized as follows.

    Note: During USB communication with PC and trend data copying to the memory in the display, measurement (dose rate and dose) can not operate.

    1) Measurement value display

    Displays by switching dose rate and dose.

    2) Setting value display Time constant, buzzer sound volume, date/time, trend data storage on/off (*1), time, trend data measurement interval, display brightness can be set. *1 Copies the latest trend data from the main detector body into built-in memory in the

    display unit.

    3) Communication function This function automatically activates when connecting to PC. Setting of calibration constant and time, trend data storage on/off (*2) can be performed. *2 Copies updated trend data from the main detector body into PC.

    When the main detector body is turned OFF or the display unit is removed from the main body, copies trend data recorded in built-in memory in the display unit into PC.

    4) Dose control

    Sets the operation status for dose measurement to START, STOP, or RESET. Dose measurement automatically starts after at the time of startup. To STOP or RESET the measurement, select operation items with ENT key and then press the buttons in the order of ENT. To restart, perform the same procedures.

    4.1 Dose rate measurement and time constant setting

    Dose rate measurement is a basic function. It can be started by turning the power on.

    Enabling the CPU device to start up for 2 seconds after turning on the power. The display is turned on when the device is ready.

    Previous setting of the buzzer mode will be taken over. To acquire a dose rate, allow the device 3 times as much as the specified time constant to read

    the indication. Refer to Section 6. Time constant table. To change time constant, press ENT key on the dose rate measurement screen then select Time

    Const. S, M or L can be chosen with ENT key. Refer to Section 6. Time constant table.

    4.2 Dose measurement

    Press key or key on the dose rate measurement screen to proceed to the dose screen. To stop dose measurement, press ENT key once on the dose indication display. Check that

    STOP is displayed at the lower left of the display and then press keys in order of ENT key to stop (temporally stop) dose measurement. To restart the dose measurement, perform the same procedures on the START display after pressing ENT key.

    To clear the dose value, press in order of ENT key after RESET? is displayed on the lower left of the display. Dose value and remaining time are reset and then time (setting value) is displayed.

    4.3 Time setting for dose measurement

    Press ENT key on the dose rate measurement screen to proceed to the menu screen. (or ) key and ENT key can change the setting. Press ENT key while Accum. time is selected. Readings are displayed in digital 4 digits by

    minute.

    To change time, press key or key to set time. Press ENT key to select SET after time is set. To cancel the changing, press key or key

    while SET is displayed, and then press ENT key while CXL is displayed. 4.4 Setting for power-saving mode

    The display can be temporally turned off for no operation on the display for a certain time. (Default

    setting is 5 min)

    Press ENT key on the dose rate measurement screen to proceed to the menu screen. (or ) key and ENT key can change the setting. Select Backlight with (or ) key and press ENT key at the same time.

    Setting time (3 choices as below) changes each time ENT key is pressed. means that the display

    4.5 Brightness control of display

    Three levels of the display brightness can be chosen. (Default setting is M)

    Press ENT key on the dose rate measurement screen to proceed to the menu screen. Select Setting with (or ) key and ENT key. Select Brightness with (or ) key and press ENT key at the same time.

    Three levels of brightness are selectable. The level (3 choices as below) on the screen can be changed by pressing ENT key.

    4.6 Buzzer (monitor sound) ON / OFF setting The beep sound (ON / OFF) can be set. (Default setting is ON)

    Press ENT key on the dose rate measurement screen to proceed to the menu screen. Select Buzzer with (or) key and press ENT key at the same time.

    Each time ENT key is pressed it changes as below. ON OFF

    Buzzer icon will be displayed on the dose rate (or dose) indication display when ON is selected.

    4.7 Trend data measurement interval setting

    Trend data measurement interval can be set in 8 steps depending on the environment. (Default setting is 60 sec.)

    Press ENT key on the dose rate measurement screen to proceed to the menu screen.

    Select Setting with key (or key) and ENT key.

    Press ENT key selecting Trend cycle with key (or key) at the same time. Setting time (8 choices as below) changes each time ENT key is pressed.

    When 0 is selected, trend data measurement is stopped.

    Press ENT key for each digit to confirm.

    4.8 Date & time setting

    Press ENT key on the dose rate measurement screen to proceed to the menu screen.

    Select Date & Time with (or ) key and press ENT key at the same time. The last 2 digits of the year can be set with (or ) key. (e.g.,) 2009 09 Y

    Pressing ENT key to change displayed items in the following order: Y (Year) M (Month) D (Day) h (hour) m (minute)

    Second will be set to 0 automatically. Select SET and press ENT key at the same time to confirm the entered time.

    Select CXL with (or ) key and press ENT key at the same time to cancel the setting.

    4.9 Copy of trend data Trend data is automatically measured and saved by display unit. The data is copied into PC. Storage of trend data is a basic function. Trend data can be measured and stored by turning the power on. Time interval to store trend data is set to 60 sec before delivery. It can store up to 1200 data. For stored data over 1200, data is automatically overwritten beginning with the oldest one and a user needs not to reset trend data. Procedure to temporally copy (back-up) the trend data into the display unit is as follows:

    Press ENT key on the dose rate measurement screen to proceed to the menu screen.

    Copy starts after pressing ENT key while selecting Trend copy with key (or key). Number of recorded trend data and copied item are displayed. When the copy is completed, press key (or key) and then press ENT key after CXL is

    indicated.

    5. Maintenance

    5.1 Maintenance and replacement parts

    Maintenance procedures are described in Table 5-1 Maintenance procedures and Table 5-2 Maintenance methods. We are not responsible for repairing of your product by your self.

    Table 5-1 Maintenance procedures

    3 Inspection before

    use For long storage, dust may be adhered. Check the followings: Clean surface dust of power connector and display with dry cloth or soft

    brush. Insert 6 batteries in properly, turn ON/OFF POWER switch 2 or 3 times,

    and then check indications are displayed on the display. (Power turns OFF in 1.5 sec after turning the switch OFF.)

    4 Others Do not use any adaptors other than the exclusive AC adaptor (another sales).When using secondary batteries, fully charge the all batteries.

    Caution

    For charge, open the compartment and remove all 6 secondary batteries. When using primary batteries, replace all the 6 primary batteries with new ones.

    Capacity of secondary batteries is decreased due to self-discharge. For storage more than 1 month, be sure to recharge before use.

    For charge of secondary batteries, use ordinary charger. Remove all batteries before storing, otherwise electrode might be corroded. Do not use primary batteries and secondary batteries together.

    Table 5-2 Maintenance methods

    2 Battery charge (for secondary battery)

    For low battery voltage, charge the batteries. For battery charge, see Section 5.3 Battery replacement. It depends on operation environments, however, replacement with new secondary batteries is recommended before operation period of the batteries exceeds one year or 400 cycles. For secondary batteries, use ordinary Ni-MH batteries.

    3 Dust removal Clean internal dust of USB terminal and signal connector with dry cloth or soft brush. If it becomes significantly tainted, completely clean it with ethanol-soaked gauze. Pay full attention to ventilation and fire when using ethanol.

    4 Check of sensitivity and soundness

    Make the same geometrical conditions using checking source such as 252Cf within a year and then relatively compare with readings after delivery.

    Caution

    When replacing batteries, make sure to turn the power OFF. Insert a new batteries in the compartment correctly. For retirement of removed batteries, follow the instructions of your country. Be sure to fully ventilate when using ethanol. When you inhale too much vapor, it

    may make you sick or get an injury. Do not use fire in the vicinity. It may cause fire disaster.

    Handle a checking source carefully. Handling a checking source should be performed by fully experienced personnel.

    5.3 Battery replacement

    For battery removal or replacement, follow the following procedures.

    (1) Turn OFF the power switch of main body (See of Fig.3-1).

    (2) Remove the battery cap of battery compartment (For location, see of Fig. 3.1). (3) Remove 6 batteries from compartment. (4) Insert 6 new AA batteries (alkaline battery or Ni-MH battery) as described in the below figure.

    (Do not use together primary batteries and secondary batteries.) (5) Close the battery cap of battery compartment.

    Note Use ordinary charger for Ni-MH when charging Ni-MH battery. Note NSN3 is not directly chargeable alone.

    Caution

    When replacing batteries, make sure to turn to off by power switch. Insert a new batteries in the compartment correctly. Use only AA alkaline batteries or AA Ni-MH batteries. Use new or full-charged batteries for all the 6 batteries replacement.

    For retirement of removed batteries, follow the waste processing instructions of your country.

    Do not use primary batteries and secondary batteries together.

    7. Troubleshooting table list Note: This Troubleshooting Table is only applicable to malfunctions occurred during use.
