Neutralising the Job

SPILL CONTAINMENT PRODUCTS

- ideal for gathering the liquids.

1. Do the required cleaning, passivating and electropolishing of the job, washing the job with water as you go.

2. When you have completed the cleaning, wash the job down with tap water.

3. Spray the job with the neutralising mix.

4. It can be observed when spraying the surface there will be slight bubbling.

5. When there is no bubbling that indicates that the acid has been neutralised.

6. Give the job another wash down with tap water and you can be satisfied that the job is

clean and neutralised of acid.

7. If the project has incomplete welds the wash down is best done with a pressure cleaner.

8. Will get any acidic fluids out of the joins.

9. To check pour some water over the surface of the job and collect in a clean container.

10. Check the water wash off with a pH meter or pH strips.

11. The checks will indicate a pH reading of > 7.5 pH.

Check with local Water Boards for waste water management requirements.

Neutralising Information

Use the SPILL CONTAINMENT PRODUCTS to gather the acid and wash-off liquids.

Neutralising Waste Liquids

NOTE : This process needs to be carried out in an open / ventilated area.

The following proceedure is based on that 1 litre of phosphoric acid ( 85% ) has been used in the cleaning, passivating process.

1. Equipment required......1.4kg of neutraliser ( powder as supplied in container), 45 litre open container, 20 litres of water.

2. Tip the liquids ( wash-off from the job ) into the 45 litre container and add 20 litres of tap water.

3. Add approximately half of the neutraliser slowly, spreading the neutraliser over the surface of the liquid.

4. When adding the powder there will be a reaction, a large amount of bubbling, this is carbon dioxide.

( this is why a large container is required ).

5. Mix the liquids in the container. Let the reaction settle before adding the remainding powder. Again mix liquids.

6. Once the reaction has stopped you may see white clumps of undiluted neutraliser on the bottom of the container.

7. This indicates that the acid / water mix is neutralised.

8. This can also be checked with a pH meter or pH strips.

9. The checks will indicate a pH reading of > 7.5 pH.

10. The waste mix now is suitable to dispose of down the sewer system.

11. If the pH meter or strips do not indicate a pH of greater than 7.5 pH, then add more neutraliser.

For larger quantities of waste liquids add neutraliser and additional tap water proportionally as the above proceedure.

The container doing the neutralising in will also need to be much larger.

Safety proceedures must be adhered to when using chemicals.

AUSTRALIAN SAFETY STANDARDS

Respiratory protection should comply with AS 1716.

Respiratory Protective Devices and be selected in accordance with AS 1715.

Selection, Use and Maintenance of Respiratory Protective Devices.

The use of a face shield, chemical goggles or safety glasses with side shield protection as appropriate.

Must comply with Australian Standards AS 1337 and be selected and used in accordance with AS 1336.

Hand protection should comply with AS 2161, Occupational protective gloves.

Foot protection should comply with AS 2210, Occupational protective footwear.

Clothing for protection against chemicals should comply with AS 3765.

Storage Regulations. Refer Australian Standard AS 3780 - 1994 ’The storage and handling of corrosive substances’.
