Inside This Issue:NET teams and staff 2012NET Alumni NoticeboardNET USA’s 30th Anniversary
Greetings to all in 2012! I feel like I have only just settled into daily office routine again and it’s already Easter. Our family had the most fabulous, event-filled Christmas imaginable. First came the knowledge of a grave illness affecting one of our extended family members. My daughter and son in law gave us a new grandson Elias Mark. My son in law’s parents came from Canada to stay for Christmas which was absolutely wonderful, and my son and family arrived home from Ireland where they had been working with NET Ministries. It was all happening in the Bennett household. I have an inkling that many of us had a similar eventful Christmas period. I know that many of our staff spent long, tireless hours working on recruiting for our teams and others on visas for those coming from overseas. Then, following our new year’s celebration we moved straight into our staff orientation days, music training and initial NET training.
This year will be a year of TRUST for NET Ministries. Of course, every year, presents its challenges in the realm of youth ministry. However, this year we were unable to fulfill our dream of supplying the ten teams which were requested of us. This shortfall was for some very legitimate reasons but in the end, it means a “very lean year” for NET. In saying that, may I add immediately, that I believe that these circumstances are a welcomed (at times stressful) challenge, as our hope must be in Christ Jesus, the provider of all we need.

“...to keep our ‘young
warriors’ out in the mssion
field, and remunerate those who supervise
and care for them.”
In our prayer, God has faithfully provided the answers to the structure of the eight teams we have compiled and the quality of the young people that make up those teams. We also by some miracle have been able to work out our finances so that we have enough to keep our “young warriors” out in the mission field, and remunerate those who supervise and care for them. We will continue by the grace of God and the generosity of young souls, to supply ‘workers into the vineyard’ in 2013. Our amazing recruiting team has put together some excellent ideas and strategies for recruiting in the years to come. We believe God will lead us in these ventures as we learn to trust more and more in his providence.
We will also be continuing our journey with NET Ministries, Uganda by sending Shayne Bennett, our founding Director and Director of Overseas Outreach Projects, to visit with the mission in Africa in April. This will primarily be a pastoral visit which includes Shayne meeting with the Leaders of NET Uganda. We have also supplied a new van for the team in Africa, without which, they would have been unable to continue their work.
We ask you to join with us in praying for these ventures, heart responsive future netters, finances and resources needed to enable us to continue contributing to the ‘new evangelism’ in this country. Our mission is to “encourage young people to love Jesus and embrace the Church”. We need your continuing support to do that in the years to come.
JENNIFER COLMER is 26 years old and from Edmonton, Canada. Jennifer served 2 years on the St Andrews school team in Cairns in 2009 and 2010. She went on to serve a 3rd year in 2011 on the National Team. This year she is supervising the Mazenod School team and is taking on the role as scheduling coordinator for the National team.
NET welcomes the new staff on board this year.
PAUL SHAKHOVSKOY is 22 years old and is a local from Brisbane. Paul served in 2011 on the MSB school team in Herberton, QLD. This year, he is supervising the MSB team as well as putting to use his degree in working as a Graphic Designer and making Multimedias.
S E A N McGRATH is 23 from E n g l a n d . He is a very t a l e n t e d m u s i c i a n , g u i t a r i s t who loves
travelling and is a big sports fan. He has grown in faith over 6 years since experiencing Jesus in his life. After leading the Mazenod team last year, this year he has responded to the call again and given up his place on NET staff to lead the 2012 Townsville Team.
STEPHEN MIERENDORF is 26 years old and hails from Ypsilanti, Michigan USA. He served for two years on the road with NET Canada and then attended the Franciscan University of Steubenville where he received a BA in Theology. He then served with NET USA for two years and with NET Ireland for one year; all three years as a supervisor and worship leader. This year he will supervise the National Team and the Local Team in Townsville and will also be working in the music department. He enjoys sports, music, and is a former National Putt-Putt Champion in the States.
The ongoing NET staff members are:
(top to bottom)
The NET staff work in a wide variety of pastoral and administrative roles – management, supervising teams, training (both delivering training and the remarkable logistics effort), finance, fund raising, recruiting, developing and choosing new ministry material, liaising with local areas and many more tasks. To get all this work done we need a multi-talented team, with a mixture of staff fresh out of the ministry, staff who have had a couple of years to learn the ropes in the office and management staff (including a few grey hairs).

All NET staff and management are sad to say goodbye to Laura Otto as she finishes up after over 3 years on staff. Laura has made outstanding contributions as a supervisor, musician, in the recruiting team and in many other ways. However, we are delighted that Laura and husband Michael (also on staff) are expecting their first child in June. We expect to see a lot of mother and child around the office!
We present the dynamic, multi-talented NET Staff for 2012!
Introducing our New Staff Members:
Farewell to Laura:
Thank You!

This year’s NET Commissioning Mass was a fitting end to the intensive training period for the Netters and a fitting beginning to a year of ministry for the teams they have become. In the absence of an Archbishop for Brisbane, Bishop Julian Porteous celebrated mass. For the first time ever NET commissioned more men than women – 23 men and 22 women.Other highlights included the afternoon tea where the families of the Netters were able to meet the team members of their sons and daughters. A collection was taken up for NET’s work in Uganda and raised $840.

Fr J im Hynes14th April 1934 - 1st April 2012
NET Ministries mourns the passing of Fr Jim Hynes, a great friend and supporter and a truly holy man.
He will be missed by all of us. Shanelle Bennett and Michael Forbes were part of the many hundreds of mourners at the funeral mass held at St Stephen’s
Cathedral on Wednesday 11th April.
It is a great joy to congratulate NET USA on 30 years of ministry.
I have many great memories of travelling to Minnesota in 1988 with my family and seeing NET training and ministry first hand.
You are great warriors for the kingdom and we really consider it a privilege to be beside you in
your work. Well done!(Shanelle Bennett)
Well done good and faithful servant.NETworks Issue 1, 2012 - 6 OUR STRATEGY - HOLINESS
A few times each year NET Staff meet to look at our long term strategic goals and to set short term goals for the next few months. Usually these goals have an operational focus. Last year we had a very effective focus on “Mining and Refining” – mining all the ministry material used by our teams over the last few years and refining it to come up with new skits, dramas, games and talk outlines for our ministry manuals. In the final months of the year we nearly always concentrate on recruiting.
Prior to our first strategy meeting for the year, NET management sat down to discuss our focus.
We all agreed that we felt God was calling us, as NET staff, to recommit to holiness – to practice as staff what we preach to the Netters. So for the first half of 2012 we are introducing several corporate holiness actions, such as monthly adoration and saints of the month (Joseph and Patrick in March).
We will also be more open about sharing where we are in our personal faith journey. So next time you run into a NET staff member, feel free to ask them about the saint of the month, or even ask them how their prayer life is going – they will be happy to share!
