What is a network?

• A group of computers and other devices that communicate together and share resources (i.e. file storage space and printing services).

Terms

• Mbps - MegaBits per second

• Nic - Network interface card

• IP - Internet Protocol

• TCP/IP - Transmission Control Protocol Internet Protocol

• Protocol - set of rules for communication for network devices.

What kind of Networks exist?

• WAN - Wide Area Network. Exists between buildings, states, countries.

• LAN - Local Area Network. Normally thought of as within a building.

• MAN - Metropolitan Area Networks

Are all networks the same?

• Ethernet - Most popular. 10 Mbps.

• Fast Ethernet - 100 Mbps

• AppleTalk - 2 Mbps. Not routed at Purdue.

• Token Ring - 4 - 16 Mbps. Passes a token.

• ARCnet - 2.5 Mbps (20 - 100 for ARCnet Plus). It too passes token.

• FDDI - Fiber Distributed Data Interface - Backbone Stuff

Are there other differences?

• Server-based networks - client/server– Monolithic vs. Distributed

• Provides centralized administration

• Push/Pull installations

• Software metering

• Standardized security

• Peer-Peer Networks– Loosely organized group of computers

(workgroups).• No centralized administration

• No big server costs

• Topologies - Star, Bus, Ring

Connectivity Devices

• Repeater - connect network segments

• Hub - connects nodes (star)

• Switch - smart hub

• Bridge - filters/moves data between segments (MAC address)

• Router - filters/moves data between segments (logical address)

• Data Link - data broken into frames, linked to MAC address

• Network - Adds extra headers to frame, translates between MAC and network address

• Transport - Assembles packets, checks for errors

Evaluating the Furbish Network

• Advantages– Runs on AA batteries

– IR connection

– Limited self-correcting behavior

• Disadvantages– Limited battery life

– Proprietary interface

– Irritating interface

– Can’t feed after midnight

• Wanna try to install memory also … it’s not exactly networking, but two hours is a lot to fill and the case is already open …...

How does networking lend itself to Restaurants, Hotels, etc?

• Shared Databases– Database can be shared and updated with a

number of people. OS or NOS provide security and reliability.

– Web interfaces will revolutionize e-commerce. (BIG plug … data-mining is the future).
