Between November 2012 and January 2013, Network IT Recruitment conductedan IT Skills Survey of the South African IT industry.

The Survey took the form of an online questionnaire, covering demographics, current employment information (including salary increases), employment benefits and employment experiences. There was a total of 861 responses to the Survey. During February 2013, Concept Evaluations cc collated and analysed the results.

Respondents came from all areas of IT, including Software Developers, Network Infrastructure staff, Technical Support

Specialists, Business Analysts, Project Managers, ERP Consultants, Security Specialists, QA/ Testers, IT Sales and IT Management.

• Demographics: The demographics of the IT industry are changing in line with B-BBEE policies. Black respondents made up 34% of the sample.

• Demographics: The industry remains male-dominated (84%) and young (74% under 35).

• Education: IT staff are more educated - 37% hold an IT degree.

• Length of Service: Very few respondents stay in a job for more than 4 years, with 50% staying for 2 years or less.

• Salary Increases: Increases have remained fairly static over the past 3 years, hovering between 6 and 10%. Expectations for 2013 remain low.

• Flexible Working Solutions: Are on the rise, with 65% of companies offering flex. Flex solutions do attract IT staff, with the majority interested in Flexitime, Accrued Hours, Technology-Enabled Solutions and Teleworking.

• Staff Movement: 62% of respondents indicated that they would consider leaving their current jobs. Salary is the primary motivator for changing jobs.

• Emigration: 53% of respondents would, or are, considering emigration.
