W E L C O M E

Dear TIA Members and Industry Colleagues,It’s no secret this is a critical year for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry. Since joining the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) last November, I’ve witnessed the enormity of opportunities, as well as chal-lenges, facing our industry.

In 2014, we saw the fastest industry growth rate in years with ICT spending in the United States increasing by 6.6 percent. Moreover, industry growth in the U.S. continues faster than the rest of the world.

This progress has been spurred by exciting new innovations. We are seeing businesses take advantage of the cost efficien-cy and agility of the cloud by virtualizing key functions of the network. In addition, the exponential growth in the number of connected devices has poised the Internet of Things to revolutionize the economy and our everyday lives.

At the same time, dramatic shifts in the industry have caused some revenue streams to run dry, while new government regulations, such as the FCC’s arbitrary Title II rule on the Internet, are threatening to clamp down on these innovations.

As the voice of the network, TIA is the one association fo-cused on all these issues. Through vision and influence, TIA affects change in the ever-evolving areas of communications. We drive innovation, impact policy through advocacy, and offer diversified market expertise to empower our members.

TIA 2015: Network of the Future is our flagship conference that brings together individuals from cross-sections of the communications industry to share opportunities and identi-fy solutions to the challenges we face. During three days of keynotes, panel discussions and special events, you will have access to intelligence, information and inspiration from the leaders and visionaries of our industry – including service providers, manufacturers, technologists and strategists, as well as government officials.

The conference is focused on the issues that matter most: the future of wireless; next-generation mobile networks; building new services and revenue in a connected world; and network infrastructure for a data-centric world. I encourage you to take full advantage of these critical conversations as we seek to shape the future of the network.

On behalf of TIA and the TIA Board, I would like to thank our host sponsor, Ericsson, and all of our sponsors for making the industry’s most comprehensive and interactive ICT confer-ence possible.

For wireless communication of any form, Radio Frequency (RF) is the medium. Anyone in the industry needs to understand RF and how our surroundings affect its behavior. When it comes to modern cellular systems, numerous technological developments affect its deployment and the business ecosystem. This intensive one-day course teaches the key technical features of all generations of cellular technologies in ad-dition to basic RF principles. After reviewing current practices in the industry around macro cell sites, we’ll study how cell sites are designed; the hardware components at a typical cell site; and the RF measurements necessary to maintain integrity of a cellular network.

Your business may increasingly rely on your ability to speak knowledgeably about SDN. You may have a vague idea of what it’s all about, but wouldn’t it be great to get a real handle on the concepts, definitions, technolo-gies, industry impact, major players, myth, reality and even more? In one day? You can, at TIA’s Network of the Future. Presented by Tallac Networks -- named one of the “Ten Coolest Network-ing Startups of 2014” -- the workshop teaches basic SDN concepts and definitions, as well as SDN technologies and major players that are impacting ICT. The workshop is presented in bite-size segments, each ending in a Q&A. Participants will receive an SDN 101 Course Certificate.

Monica Aspe Bernal, Mexico’s newly appointed Secretary of Communications, will highlight the tremendous opportunities for business created by Mexico’s in-ternational bid to create a unique, public/private 4G/LTE wireless broadband telecommunications network that will revolutionize telecom services and spur innova-tion across the country. The shared wholesale mobile network, known as Red Compartida, is considered the most important telecommuni-cations infrastructure project in the history of Mexico and includes 90 MHz of continuous spectrum on the valuable 700 MHz band, among the largest tenders for spectrum in the world.

Joseph Kopser co-founded the mobile app RideScout, which aggregates all public, private and social ground transportation options enabling consumers to evaluate transit options in real time. The Internet of Things (IoT) and virtualization are driving and defining the Network of the Future. Future networks will be needed to deliver the highest levels of service to not only human end-users, but also machine-based end-users. Powered by enterprises’ digital transformation, the Internet of Things will transform industries, from agriculture to hospitality.

To effectively enable this transformation, the networks of tomorrow will require scalability to meet the peak demands of some 50 billion connected devices - all while fulfilling capacity demands of digitally connected end users who are downloading or live-streaming video, connecting with cloud-based applications, and demanding more from the network. Virtualization of the network, from the core to the access point, offers many benefits to network operators. However, implementing such a transformation cost-effectively while maintaining an active network is no small task.

Hear from a prestigious group of leading technologists on how networks are fundamentally changing to create a more agile, intelligent, and capable network, in addition to the new services that IoT and virtualization will enable.
