Emily ForbesJCA Netball Coordinator Profi leI started playing netball at Junior School, and then continued to play throughout my School, College and University years. I found it was a great way to keep fi t, socialise and have fun. Throughout my time playing netball I was selected to play for my district, county and even have trials for the England Squad. This was a great experience because I had the opportunity to be coached by professional netball players. I am currently in the process of recruiting my own netball team in Portsmouth, and I cannot wait to get back on the court!!

Having always been on the court playing centre or goal attack, it is great to be involved behind the scenes at JCA Netball Tournaments. I am able to observe the girls play, see the

improvements in their technique over the weekend, and watch them have fun. By having England Netball affi liated umpires at our netball weekends we allow the coaches to focus solely on developing and motivating their players whilst they are playing. This gives the coaches a great opportunity to encourage and train each individual player to help increase their maximum potential on the netball court.

With netball changing, participation growing and teams developing, I believe a coach’s role should never be underestimated. I think that coaching during training sessions as well as during matches is fundamental when wanting to progress player’s individual skills and team skills. It is very important for a netball team to work well together as a team; this is why the JCA netball weekends really encourage teams to work together off the court as well as on the court. The activities set up alongside the netball tournament (e.g. High ropes, body zorbing) are fantastic for team building and team morale. They also provided the netball girls and teachers with lots of laughs and enjoyment in our fi rst season of JCA Netball Tournaments.

I am looking forward to attending the JCA Netball Tournaments in 2012 and meeting lots of you there. Our second season is looking full of great netball competition!!

Congratulations to Jill Bailey the winner of the 16GB iPad 2!

She correctly answered our question ‘In which year did netball fi rst feature in the Commonwealth Games?’ The correct answer was 1998. We would like to thank everyone else for their entries and encourage you to enter this issue’s fantastic competition.

Here are some questions that Jill has kindly answered for us relating to her netballing experience as well as coaching and training children in the sport.

How long have you been involved in netball coaching, both at Blandford School and outside the school?I’ve been coaching / teaching netball for 20 years. Plus, in my role as School Sports Co-ordinator I have run Junior Netball Organisers

awards and been responsible for planning and delivering numerous Netball Festivals/ Tournaments to children at our 8 local Primary schools (from Year 3 up to Year 6). Just recently I have been working alongside Karen Peaty the Netball Development Offi cer for Dorset to set up a Junior Netball Club in the North of the County.

Why do you think it is important for students to participate in team (specifi cally netball) sports? It’s hugely important for students to participate in team sports. It develops all strands of the PE National Curriculum, Physical, Social, Cognitive, Personal, Creative and Health. Playing as a valued member of a team also helps build self esteem. It teaches students to win with humility and take defeat with dignity; and to look upon it as a way of improving for the future.

What are your school netball team’s best memories? The best memories are of our Local Primary school team (Pimperne Primary) who I helped coach. They won our North Dorset High 5 Tournament, progressed to the County Finals which they won and then went on to do incredibly well at Regional Level. For such a small school it was a fantastic achievement.

How are you raising money to attend a JCA Netball Tournament? The girls are fundraising in order to buy team shirts that we can wear on tour and then for future matches. At the moment we play in our PE T-shirts and bibs. They would really like shirts that have the stick on patches. Over the past few years Netball has really taken off in the school. Our Netball Academy on a Thursday night sees between 40 to 50 girls from Years 7 to 9 regularly turning up for coaching.

Improvements for 2012For 2012 we have also incorporated a number of exciting improvements to ensure that your weekend tournament is made as comfortable and exciting as possible. The following new initiatives will be in place during your stay:

Saturday Evening Entertainment…Silent DiscoThe Silent Disco is held in the Sport’s Hall on Saturday night. Discos have never been so much fun! It is hilarious to watch and even more fun to participate with two channels of choice and one DJ.

Adult Supervisor’s Cheese and Wine EveningCheese and wine will be provided in the bar area between 19:00 and 20:00 during the silent disco, enabling the adults to relax and catch up after a busy day, while the children are supervised by JCA staff.

New Activities…Body ZorbingBody Zorbing can be a team or individual based activity. Participants take part in Sumo, football and other tumbling activities. Each participant wears their own body zorb and can tumble and bump into each other free from feeling any impact.

Team ChallengeA variety of exciting team challenges will help to build team spirit and rapport between matches.

Buzz WireBuzz Wire is a giant version of the classic game where you move a metal hoop through twists and turns around the metal wire without setting off the buzzer. Challenge your friends and your own ability!

Facilities…Water Station & FruitA water and fresh fruit station will be available on the courts during matchplay allowing team members to ‘refuel’.

Court lines re-paintedCourt lines have been freshly re-painted to ensure they are kept sharp and well defi ned for accurate umpiring.

Courts available for practiceSelected courts and the Sport’s Hall will now be available on request in the evening, allowing your team time to develop their skills between play.

Umpire’s Award…In addition to the normal winner and runner’s up awards there will be an ‘Umpires Award’ at each tournament. This will be presented at the discretion of the Umpires and could be presented for a number of reasons including most improved player, best sportsmanship, best player of the tournament, etc.
