What is NetApp Capacity Views for BMC TrueSight CapacityOptimization?
NetApp Capacity Views for BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization is an additional componentspecifically designed for administrators who uses NetApp Data ONTAP ETL for BMC TrueSightCapacity Optimization and want the NetApp specific terminology to be used in views rather thanthe vendor-agnostic terminology. Vendor-agnostic terminology is provided by the StorageCapacity Views for BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization.
How Does it Work?
NetApp Capacity Views for BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization leverages the NetApp DataONTAP ETL for BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization connector developed by Sentry Software tocollect capacity information about:
HA Pairs/Clusters
vFilers/Vservers
Aggregates
Volumes
LUNs.
What Are the Key Benefits?
NetApp Capacity Views for BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization help administrators perform allthe basic management operations that they are required to perform daily such as:
allocating storage capacity to new servers
analyzing storage capacity utilization
planning for additional storage capacity
reclaiming unused storage capacity.

Importing Data into the NetAppCapacity ViewsTo import capacity data into the NetApp Capacity Views, you need to install and configure NetApp Data ONTAP ETL for BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization with the NetApp specificterminology.
For more information about the installation and configuration of NetApp Data ONTAP ETL for BMCTrueSight Capacity Optimization, please refer to the product-specific user documentation.
Once the ETL is properly installed and configured, the NetApp Capacity views will beautomatically materialized every day by the NetApp Capacity Views - Data Mart Materializertask. If the ETL has been installed at the same time as the NetApp Capacity Views, you will haveto wait for at least 24 hours before visualizing data in the views.

NetApp Capacity Views for BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization leverages BMC TrueSightCapacity Optimization capabilities to automatically analyze, forecast, and optimize performanceand storage capacity in your IT environment. The following use cases provide some basicmanagement operations that can be easily performed with NetApp Capacity Views for BMCTrueSight Capacity Optimization:
better allocate storage capacity to new servers
analyze storage capacity utilization
plan for additional storage capacity
reclaim unused storage capacity.
Allocating Storage Capacity to NewServersAllocating storage capacity to new servers consists in identifying which aggregate from whichNetApp system is best suited to host the storage capacity required. To identify these aggregates, administrators need to:
list the HA Pairs/Clusters that can meet allocation requirements
verify the HA Pairs/Clusters bandwidth
choose the most relevant aggregate.

Verifying the HA Pairs/Clusters Bandwidth
Verifying the bandwidth is an essential step that will help administrators choose the HA Pair/Cluster that better meets their allocation requirements. To perform this operation, administrators must check the bandwidth utilization and the number of ports available for each HA Pair/Cluster.
1. Access the NetApp Systems view:
In the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization console, click the Views tab. All viewsavailable are displayed.
In the Storage category, click NetApp Systems.
2. Click the HA Pairs/Clusters tab.
3. Show the Number of Ports column:
Click and select Show/hide columns.
Check the Number of Ports box.
Click Apply.
4. Verify the bandwidth utilization of each system. If the value is:
low, the storage system can be used to allocate storage capacity to new servers
high, check the number of ports currently available to know if additional ports can beadded.

The most relevant HA Pair/Cluster is now identified. You can now proceed to the next step, i.echoosing an aggregate according to its available capacity.
Choosing the Most Relevant Aggregate 1. Access the Storage Systems view:
In the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization console, click the Views tab. All viewsavailable are displayed.
In the Storage category, click NetApp Systems.
2. Click the Aggregates tab.
3. Check the Available Capacity of the different aggregates displayed.
A list of potential aggregates is now available. You should now know which aggregate fromwhich HA Pair/Cluster is best suited to host the storage capacity required. If no aggregates meetyour requirement, you will then have to create a new one.

Analyzing Storage Capacity UtilizationStorage demand exponentially grew over the past years and lead to runaway storage costs. Tocontrol these costs, SAN administrators are asked to better plan for future capacity needs, whichis almost impossible without a clear view of the storage capacity utilization. With NetAppCapacity Views for BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization, administrators can analyze storagecapacity utilization at the HA Pairs/Clusters and aggregates levels.
At the Clusters Level1. Access the Storage Systems view:
In the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization console, click the Views tab. All viewsavailable are displayed.
In the Storage category, click NetApp Systems.
2. Click the HA Pairs/Clusters tab.
4. Verify the capacity of the HA Pairs/Clusters and more specifically:
their overall size (Size metric).
their total space (Capacity metric).
the host visible capacity (Subscribed Capacity metric).
the total space not consumed (Available Capacity metric).
the space actually consumed (Consumed Capacity metric).

Planning for Additional StorageCapacityAdministrators are not only asked to assign storage resources but also to plan for both currentand future storage requirements. Because under-purchasing and over-purchasing capacity willrespectively result in downtimes and wasted storage, both situations must be prevented.Smooth storage administration can only be achieved if administrators know exactly:
when their aggregates will be running out of capacity
by how much the capacity of their aggregates must be extended to meet allocationrequirements
if there are enough unused disks in the clusters to extend the capacity of the existingaggregates.
With this information, they will be able to guarantee enough remaining space to answerallocation requests as quickly as possible.
When will Aggregates be Running out of Capacity?1. Access the NetApp Systems view:
In the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization console, click the Views tab. All views

Are There Enough Unused Disks in the Aggregates?
Before purchasing additional space, administrators can also check if there are unused disks intheir aggregates that could still be used to extend the capacity of the existing aggregates. Toperform this verification:
1. Access the NetApp Systems view:
In the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization console, click the Views tab. All viewsavailable are displayed.
In the Storage category, click NetApp Systems.
2. Click the HA Pairs/Clusters tab.
3. Click the HA Pair/Cluster for which you wish to check the number of unused disks.
4. Check the Available for Storage Pools metric.
You now know which disks can be used to extend the capacity of your aggregates.

Reclaiming Unused Storage CapacityOver time, as servers connected to a SAN get decommissioned, administrators find an increasingnumber of unmapped LUNs that are no longer used by any server. These LUNs, while unused, stilloccupy disk space in the cluster. Being able to identify such unmapped LUNs and reclaim the diskspace uselessly consumed by these LUNs will help administrators avoid unnecessary upgradesand extensions of their clusters.
Identifying Unmapped LUNs1. Access the NetApp Systems view:
In the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization console, click the Views tab. All viewsavailable are displayed.
In the Storage category, click NetApp Systems.
2. Click the LUNs tab.
3. Display unmapped LUNs.
You can now reclaim the disk space uselessly consumed by these LUNs to avoid unnecessaryupgrades and extensions.
LUNs might be tagged as Not Mapped but be required for the correct operation of the system.
