“’Even though I walk through the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side

with your rod and your staff that give me courage . . .

Only goodness and kindness will follow me all the days of my life;

and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for years to come.”

From Psalm 23

This Sunday has been heralded to be “Good Shepherd Sunday.” Today’s Gospel from John 10:1-10 reminds us that the Good Shepherd always desires the safety and well-being of his flock. The Good Shepherd comes “so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10). It was not uncommon that more than one shepherd would share a pen so that different flocks were commingled. When it was time to move on, the sheep would follow the unique call of their shep-herd and not the other voices they would hear. In today’s world, we hear many voices, many opin-ions, many falsehoods so that we too need to fine tune our hearing to follow the voice of Christ. If we do so, we are promised a life that includes an abundance of grace and peace. Psalm 23 reminds us of our true homeland where we hope to one day be united with the Good Shepherd. The following is a quote from Gregory the Great written in the 6th century that ex-

of the everlasting fresh pastures of paradise? For the pasture of the saints is to see God face to face; when the vision of God never fails, the soul receives its fill of the food of life forever. And so, dear brothers and sisters, let us seek these pastures and there join in the joy of the celebrations of so many citizens of heaven. Let their happiness and rejoicing be an invitation to us. Let our hearts grow warm, let our faith be rekindled, let our desires for heavenly things grow warm; for to love like this is to be on the way.” Fr. Dennis

CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE RECEIVING EASTER SACRAMENTS We congratulate the following members of our R.C.I.A. who last week received Easter Sacra-ments. Last Wednesday, Miranda and Nyellie Gomez received all three Sacraments of Ini-tiation. Last Sunday, Letecha Montellano, Kimberly and Rafael Rivera received their first Eucharist. The Archbishop has asked us to confer the Sacraments of Initiation on all members of the R.C.I.A. in ceremonies with 10 or less present in the liturgies during the East-er Season, which ends on the great Feast of Pentecost. Please continue to pray for those who will be receiving sacraments in the coming weeks as we welcome them into our community of faith. Those candidates who would have received both Confirmation and Eucharist will only be receiving their First Eucharist; they will receive Confirmation at a later date

ST. MATTHEW PARISH UPDATE AS OF APRIL 27, 2020

OFFICE HOURS: We are open: M-F 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and closed on Saturdays. CHURCH BUILDING AND ADORATION: Our Church is currently closed, and Adoration is not

currently available. There are smaller parishes in our city who have their chapels open dur-ing the day; please contact their offices for times and locations.

ALL WEEKEND AND WEEKDAY MASSES ARE CANCELLED UP TO MAY 18TH, 2020. We continue to have taped Sunday Masses available for viewing on our parish website: www.stmatts.org and Parish Facebook Page. We continue to have private weekday Masses to include our previously scheduled Mass intentions.

SACRAMENTS: Sacraments, such as Baptism and Matrimony, can only be conducted with groups of 10 or fewer persons; most have been postponed to later dates. The group baptis-mal classes are currently cancelled until further notice. E-mail Deacon Oscar at [email protected] for more information. The Sacrament of Penance is only by individual ap-pointment for those with serious sins and who have not gone within one month’s time. The Anointing of the Sick is currently reserved to those who are seriously ill or having a sched-uled surgery; Fr. Dennis and Fr. Duncan will anoint by appointment. Please note that sever-al nursing homes and the Methodist and Baptist Hospitals are currently not allowing priests to anoint in their facilities; the Methodist Hospitals have a Catholic priest as a chaplain who will assist.

FUNERALS: Funerals can only be scheduled for groups of 10 persons or fewer. We continue to suggest having an interment service and the scheduling of a Memorial Mass where more persons can attend at a later date. Bruce Orey, our Consolation Minister, can be contacted at 210-478-5036.

BAPTISMAL INFORMATION At this time all baptismal classes and group baptisms are suspended until further notice. Please contact Deacon Oscar Vela at [email protected] (the Stmatt.org does not need to be capitalized) for all inquires.

UPCOMING CONFIRMATION, FIRST COMMUNIONS: They are postponed. R.C.I.A.: We will confer Sacraments of Initiation throughout the Easter Season on closed

Masses held during the week with 10 or fewer persons in attendance. We congratulate those who have and soon will receive their Easter Sacraments!

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL: They are open only Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m. They are in need of donations of: canned goods, pasta, diapers, toilet paper, and the usual items they request; no clothing donations are being accepted at this time. You can drop them off only during their open office hours (Wed-Fri 9 to 11 a.m.) or from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. M-F to our Parish Administration Building.

SCHOOL: Our school continues to meet to practice distance learning. Unfortunately, the 8th Grade Graduation Mass scheduled for Saturday, May 30th will most likely be postponed to a date in the latter part of this summer.

MEETINGS: Most have been postponed and others, such as the Pastoral Council, Finance Council and Youth meetings are now meeting using electronic formats.

STAFF MEMBERS: Only a few essential staff members are coming into the office; most are working remotely from home, accessing telephone and e-mail messages. We are asking parishioners to not come into the office to meet with staff members or clergy unless one is dropping off a document of something that is too difficult to be mailed. We will handle most of our ministry through the telephone, e-mail, etc.

WEB PAGE: Please visit: www.stmatts.org for the latest updates. DONATIONS: We are grateful for all who have continued to donate through mail, walk-in drop

offs during office hours, or online. We now have over 130 additional parish families who have recently signed up for online giving, which is available on our parish website! It is also possible to donate on a smart phone via text at: 555888 then type in “stmatts”. Call Nan-ette at 210-478-5015 in our office if you need someone to guide you through the process of setting up online giving. I cannot stress enough how much we rely on each parishioner, (except those who are now without work or due to cuts in hours or pay may not be able to tithe at this time) to continue your usual support of our parish, of which we are most grateful.

FESTIVAL: The festival on May 3rd has been cancelled. Although we had held out hope to transfer our raffle to a later date in the Fall, with such economic uncertainty we as a staff and Festival Committee do not feel comfortable asking for parishioners to sell or turn in tick-ets, so the raffle is as of now cancelled as well. We are sorry to have to do this, but we also would be running the risk of not receiving enough donations to cover the cost for the raffle prizes. Our staff is doing everything in its power to limit liabilities and costs. We will just have to wait until next May of 2021 to have our festival and raffle. If you have your tickets, you may recycle them now. If you turned in festival tickets and monies to us, we have not de-posited checks but have been holding these donations in a safe place. Please call or leave a voice message with our parish secretary Kay at 210-478-5003. Instruct her as to how you want to receive the ticket sale monies you had sent to us.

PRAYERS NEEDED: We continue to adapt to these challenging times. Please continue to pray for the virus’ diminishment, the development of remedies and vaccinations for the COVID-19, for the protection of first responders and medical personnel, for those who are struggling to recover, for those who have died, and for consolation for the family members of those who have died. The Archdiocese has sent us the following prayer (See Page 6) to share with all of you.

In Christ’s peace, Fr. Dennis D. Aréchiga

“Our Lady of Guadalupe, in these times of tribulation, we turn to you, O Mother. See with compassion the suffering of your beloved sons and Daughters affected by the Coronavirus Pandemic throughout the entire world. Ask your Son to have mercy on us bringing healing to those infected and protection to all your children. Jesus Christ, Savior of all people, grant us courage to accompany and care for the entire world in the wake of sorrow and uncertainty. We seek refuge in you, and according to your promise, deliver us from this danger. Amen. St. Anthony of Padua, Pray for us.”

World Day of Prayer will be observed on Sunday, May 3, 2020, also known as "Good Shepherd Sunday." The purpose of this day is to publically fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). Please pray that young men and women hear and respond generously to the Lord's call to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of apostolic life or secular institutes. You can find many resources to promote a culture of vocations on the USCCB Vocations webpage (www.usccb.org/vocations).
