SENSORY NEURONS
Nerves that carry information to the central nervous system
Connect the sense organs to the brain and spinal cord
![Page 4: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
MOTOR NEURONS
Nerves that carry information from the central nervous system
Carries messages from the brain and spinal cord to other parts of your body
![Page 5: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
INTERNEURONS
Nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord responsible for processing information related to sensory input and motor output
![Page 6: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)

Most information travels from the body, up the spinal cord, is processed by the brain, sent back down the spinal cord, and then back to the body with behavior instructions. The exception to this general pathway is reflexes.
![Page 12: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Reflexes are controlled by the spinal cord without any conscious effort on behalf of the brain. Reflexes serve as primitive responses that protect our bodies from danger and help us adjust to our surroundings.

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

NERVOUS SYSTEM
The brain and spinal cordThe brain is the location of most
information processing. The spinal cord is the main pathway to
and from the brain.
![Page 16: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
SPLIT OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
![Page 17: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
The Central Nervous System (CNS) consists of the brain and the spinal cord.
![Page 18: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Consists of Sensory and Motor Nervesconnect the central nervous system to
the rest of the bodyPeripheral means “outer region”The system is subdivided into the
somatic and autonomic nervous systems.
![Page 19: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)

![Page 20: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
SOMATIC
The division of the peripheral nervous system that controls the body’s skeletal muscles
Contains the motor nerves needed for the voluntary muscles
![Page 21: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
AUTONOMIC
Monitors the autonomic functions
Controls breathing, blood pressure, and digestive processes
Divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
![Page 22: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)

SYMPATHETIC
The part of the autonomic nervous system that arouses the body to deal with perceived threats
Fight or flight response
![Page 24: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
PARASYMPATHETIC
The part of the autonomic nervous system that calms the body
Brings the body back down to a relaxed state
![Page 25: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
TO REMEMBER THE DIFFERENCE…
What does a parachute do?

TWO COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
NervousEndocrine
They both communicate to the body.
![Page 34: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
ENDOCRINE
The endocrine system communicates by secreting hormones into the bloodstream
![Page 35: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
HORMONES
What are hormones? The things adults say teenagers
have too much of…Chemical messengers circulated in
the bloodstream.
![Page 36: Nervous & Endocrine System](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062422/56812faa550346895d952d15/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)

HYPOTHALAMUS
The hypothalamus is the brain region that controls the pituitary gland, or the MASTER GLAND of the endocrine system. It controls homeostasis

Controls all other glands.

PANCREASLocated behind the stomachRegulates the level of blood
sugar (insulin) in the bloodToo much: sluggishness and
inattentivenessToo little: dehydration, overworked
kidneys, infections
