systemstoidentifyproblemlocations,theywillneedtoresolvegroundandtreeclearanceissuesinordertobeincompliancewithNERCregulations.HendrixAerialCableSystemsistheperfectfitforthesesituations.H.A.C.S.canmitigatetheseproblemsattheselocations,hardenstheinfrastructureagainstvegetation,animals,brushcontactanddramaticallyimprovesSAIDI,&SAIFImetrics.Installingthissystem
willhaveanimmediateimpact;costsavingsthroughreducedcustomeroutagesandimprovementsinsafetymetricswillberecognizedimmediately.
INTRODUCTION
Blackoutscausedbyvegetationencroachmentonpowerlinesandimproperlyratedlineshavecostutilitiesandbusinessesbillionsofdollars.Asadirectresult,theNorthAmericanElectricReliabilityCorporation(NERC)issuedtwoalertsrequiringU.S.andCanadianutilitiestoregularlymonitorthecontinent’s450,000milesoftransmissionlinesforvegetationencroachmentandlineratingassessment.UtilitiesareutilizingnewtechnologiesfromLIDARtoDronestomapandmeasureexistinginfrastructuretoidentifycriticalareasinthegrid.MuchoftheoverallprojectcostisattributedtoairborneLiDARoperations.Utilitiescanexpecttospend$1,500to$4,000perlinearmile,dependingontheterrain,configurationandwidthofthetransmissionlinecorridor. Untilrecentlymostofthistechnologyhasfocusedonthetransmissionsystem,howeverincreasinglyutilitiesareincludingtheirdistributionsystemcircuitsalso.Asmoreofautility’ssystemismappedandtroublespotsidentified,itisimperativetodevelopaplanofactiontoensurecompliancewithNERCregulations.
