NEOLITHIC The period of human culture that began around 10,000

years ago in the Middle East and later in other parts of the world. It is characterized by the beginning of farming, the domestication of animals, the development of crafts such as pottery and weaving, and the making of polished stone tools. The Neolithic Period is generally considered to end for any particular region with the introduction of metalworking, writing, or other developments of urban civilization. Also called New Stone Age.

NEOLITHIC TIMES The Neolithic Era(New Stone Age) began when humans

invented agriculture and started making tools out of matel instead of stone.

Neolithic people learned how to farm and domestocate animals. Domesticate means train a wild animal to be useful to humans. Sheep were among the first animals to be domesticated by

humans. A lot of neolithic people began living in the Fertile Crescent also

known as “Cradle of Civilization”.it was the place where the land was fertile (good for growing plants).

They began to form villages around the fields they formed and they learned how to make many new things like:jewelry, pottery, bigger houses, better clothing, and stronger tools.

They divided up the work;some people farmed, some took care of animals, some built houses, some made tools, some made clothing, some made pottery, and others traded.

After starting agriculture Neolithic people began to focus on making their lives comfortable and beautiful.

They began decorating their clothing, pottery, and jewelry;some women even began wearing makeup.

Trade began during the Neolithic Era. Trade is buying and selling/exchanging goods. Neolithic people began to trade for things they

wanted, some people became traders. They wanted resources they did not have. Ife improved greatly during the Neolithic Era when

people began farming, settling down in permanent homes, and trading.

ROLE OF WOMEN IN NEOLITHIC ERA

Women were thought equal to men. The women stayed at the home-front and tended the

farm. There was great emergence of female deities.

ACTIVITIES WOMEN DID: Farming

Grinding corn

Spinning and weaving

Cloth production

Made pottery

HOW SYSTEM CHANGED? With the discovery of agriculture, people began to

have food surpluses that led to population growth. Women started staying at homes rather than fields. Men took over the charge. Matriarchal system changed to patriarchal.

THE NEOLITHIC REVOLUTION

The Neolithic Revolution is the transformation of human societies from being hunter-gatherer based to agriculture based.

The period, which occurred between 12,000 and 8,000 years ago, brought along many profound changes to human society and culture.

Page 12: Neolithic times

RESULT OF NEOLITHIC REVOLUTION

Permanent settlements were established.  Neolithic villages continued to divide work between

men and women.  Women's status declined as men took the lead in most

areas of these early societies.

AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION During the Neolithic Agricultural Revolution(9000

B.C.E),people learned to FARM! They began to grow their own crops and settle in farmer villages.

Page 15: Neolithic times

AND THEN THERE WAS AGRICULTURE(FARMING)..

This was a HUGE breakthrough! People learned to FARM How did they learn? No one knows for sure Food-gathering women may have noticed that seeds

grew into plants each year Differences in soil, may have stayed near good soil and

found they could harvest crops

EFFECTS OF AGRICULTURE Domesticating animals Better health for humans More free time Growth in population Permanent settlement Interaction among

settlement(trade,warfare,technological exchange)

No more gathers and hunters In this period, caven stop hunting and gathering and instead they start to cultivate and do livestock The ceramics was an important part of this period.

CONCLUSION

The Neolithic Revolution affected gender roles because before, during the Hunting and Gathering days, men and women were equal in that they both shared work. After the transition from H&G to Neolithic, women stayed indoors more to take care of the increasing number of children they have since they now live in one stable place, instead of wandering around all the time during the H&G. So women are lower than men because they don't work; men do, and they control the food amount coming into the villages. The woman's live changed from matriarchy to patriarchy, because the farmwork required more muscle which males tend to have more.
