1. I PREFER to work in natural materials such as stone, wood, concrete, plaster, chalk, linen and natural fibres. They’re all sustainable and age beautifully. 2. GOOD DESIGN means undoing the clutter and getting to the core, paring back to the bone, and achieving authenticity, simplicity and purity. Good design is not limited to one kind of place or one kind of customer, it is adaptable to different contexts like the Infra-Structure light I did for Flos or the Paul sofa I did for Molteni&C. The latter is a reinter-pretation of a traditional sofa, its dimensions offer different uses making the sofa the protagonist of the living room: for sitting, for lying, for res-ting, for lounging. I became Creative Director at Molteni&C and Dada last year with responsibility for art direction, product development, show-rooms and new stores including a flagship opened in Tokyo in October. 3. TO NAME just a few of my favorite artists – they are Thomas Houseago, Ugo Rondinone, Katja Strunz (seen here), Sterling Ruby, Robert Map-plethorpe, Nan Goldin, Jan Van Schoonhoven, George Vantongerloo, Donald Judd. 4. IN ADDITION to Belgium’s beautiful historic centres and buildings in cities such as Ghent, Bruges and Brussels, I would re-commend my hometown Antwerp. Remember to visit Copyright Book-shop, the shop and restaurant Graanmarkt 13 and Youth Hostel – three of my own projects. Additionally, you have to experience the St Carolus Borromeus Baroque church and St Anna tunnel under the river Scheldt

built from1931-1933. 5. MY FAVORITE GET-AWAY place in the world is my home. Taking into account the continuous travelling and the many places I visit, my home is my sanctuary where I can completely disconnect from my hectic professional life. 6. AN ICONIC DESIGNER who inspires me right now is the Swiss architect Pierre Jeanneret. His Easy Armchair has been a favorite for many years. I like its minimalist design and the way it’s made without fasteners. Swedish furniture designer Axel Einar Hjorth is also an inspiration especially because of his primary forms, craftsman-ship, unexpected proportions and their crossover between rustic, bruta-listic and sophisticated. 7. IN BRUSSELS my favourite gallery is Xavier Hufkens. Also I highly recommend Antwerp’s Middelheim Open Air Sculpture Museum, which has an interesting pavilion designed by the Belgian architect Renaat Braem (1910-2001). 8. I LOVE Peter Zumthor’s book ‘Atmospheres’ – in which the Swiss architect focuses on the question of what creates an architectural atmosphere. 9. I TRAVEL A LOT, so I love hotels that feel like a home away from home. My favourites are simply decorated with a peaceful atmosphere – The Mercer Hotel in New York for its timeless interior and Park Hyatt in Milan, where I always book the same room, which has stunning views of the historic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. 10. ANOTHER FAVORITE is Aman Tokyo, an oasis of tran-quility and Zen-like architecture in the middle of the metropolis. /
