Kontak Anton Viljoen by 083 269 3333 vir meer inligting.

VSkakel Gustav by 0833831730 vir meer inligting.

Uber driver Uzest’s story of hope

Tutsi refugees, similar to Uzest, in 1994 during the genocide in Rwanda. PHOTO: PEET SIMONIS/ARCHIVE

NIELEN DE KLERK@nielendk

He was a young boy when he lay on top of his father’s body in Rwanda for days, an orphan without a future.

Uzest Uzatsinda (27), an Uber driver in Cape Town, has a life story that reads like something from a movie.

He was three when the ethnic killings in his country started.

In what is sometimes described as the most effective and quickest mass genocide in history, an estimated 800 000 people were slaughtered by Hutu extremists over only 100 days in 1994.

The Hutus were targeting members of Uzest’s own native community, the Tutsis.

Many of the events were told to him later, but he remembers snippets. He remembers how his father was killed, he remembers walking in the bushes, he remembers be-ing saved, he remembers the orphanage. And later, he remembers his mother.

Uzest was visiting his bus driver father in Kigali when the violence broke out. His mother was working as a nurse in Gisenyi and the family would often travel between the cities. He was the youngest, the darling of the family, and was supposed to stay with his father for 10 days.

“The same day my mother left was the day they started killing,” he says softly over a glass of cooldrink in a local mall.

Uzest and his father fled. They walked for months, trying to get to one of Rwanda’s borders.

They survived many close calls. In one incident they hid in a church which was later surrounded by militia who killed the majority of those inside.

When telling the story, Uzest often stops, looking for the right words. He learned to

speak English relatively recently. His father was killed three months after

they first fled from Kigali. “They catch us,” Uzest says. “They killed everyone.”

He smiles with pride when he remem-bers his father’s last moments. “He didn’t even cry or shout. He told me not to cry.”

Miraculously Uzest’s life was spared. One of the killers told the others he knew Uzest’s family from before and that he knew Uzest was an adopted Hutu boy. He was thrown on his father’s body and lay there, too scared to move. “I didn’t know how to count days, but later they said I might have been there for three days,” he says.

A Hutu woman found him there and took him home. She was married to an ardent killer, but she secretly hoarded some Tutsi children, Uzest says. The woman then took him to an orphanage nearby, incidentally

close to where he grew up in Gisenyi. There he stayed for a few years before he

was transferred to a larger orphanage in Kigali.

Here he stayed for around eight years, slowly forgetting the past. He became the church’s band leader in the orphanage and called the fellow children his brothers and sisters.

One day, when Uzest was 14, a local radio station’s presenters paid a visit to the or-phanage. One of these presenters was his biological brother, Veda.

Somebody at the orphanage told Veda there was a boy who looked like him.

“When my brother saw me, he started crying,” Uzest says. He had no idea who this man was. “I was thinking, why is a big man like this crying?”

Veda tried to convince him they were re-lated, but Uzest didn’t believe him. Veda

then went to fetch their mother, Isabelle. His mother immediately recognised

him. “She didn’t even greet, she fell down straight and then she lifted me up.”

He finally left the orphanage. “Then I started a new life.”

Uzest stayed with his mother and sib-lings after that and later studied electrical engineering in Rwanda. He struggled to find work and came to South Africa around three years ago, seeking a better future.

He initially worked as a waiter before starting as an Uber driver.

He pays R2500 a week to the owner of the car, which earns him a minimal income.

But Uzest goes where others don’t and has a different perspective. “Uber recently told us we shouldn’t go to some of the town-ships after dark. But I go. I’ve seen worse.”

Things will work out, he believes. This cat still has many lives left.
