2 2004 ELECTRICAL STANDARDS & PRODUCT GUIDE NEMA

We're proud to present this year's edition of the ElectricalStandards & Product Guide to more than 50,000 engineers, architects, specifiers, and buyers of electrical products.

The standards in this issue represent the work of hundredsof volunteers dedicated to the manufacture of effective, safeelectrical products The hundreds of manufacturers represent-ed in ESPG 2004 make those products, products that keepour world in light and power, that drive our economies andour cultures.

This last year has been an important year for energy in theUnited States. During the massive grid failure in August of2003, 50 million people lost power, some for several days.Businesses lost billions of dollars. A comprehensive energybill that NEMA helped formulate was held hostage to politicsand failed to pass in the last legislative session, although newlegislation was on the table in early 2004. Its passagenotwithstanding, the bill spurred a much needed publicdebate on our electrical infrastructure and the nation's energypolicies.

This year's edition includes new standards that figureprominently in the flow and control of America's energy grid. For instance, the association released PE 1-2003,Uninterruptible Power Systems—Specification andPerformance Verification. The international standard pro-vides manufacturers and other users a method for specifyingthe performance attributes of an uninterruptible power systemand for verifying its performance against specifications.

NEMA also released ANSI C12.20-2002, AmericanNational Standard for Electricity Meters—0.2 and 0.5Accuracy Classes. It establishes the physical aspects andacceptable performance criteria for electrical meters thatmeasure and register electricity.

We revised three standards on portable cells and batteries, which update safety information, instructions for use, andmarking requirements for these devices. These standards rankamong the most sophisticated battery standards in the world.

Some of our most popular standards were also reissued inthe last year, including MG 1, Motors and Generators andMW 1000, Magnet Wire. Fully revised for the first timesince 1998, MG 1 provides more than 500 pages of manufac-turing and performance data related to electric motors andgenerators and enables users to make the proper selection andapplication of these devices. MW 1000 presents all the stan-dards for magnet wire in a single, convenient volume, includ-ing general requirements common to all types of magnetwire. MG 1 and MW 1000 were issued in both printed andCD editions.

Several new releases are directly related to public safety.NEMA's Training Manual on Fire Alarm Systems is used totrain thousands of electricians each year. The manual pro-vides training text for the proper installation of fire alarm sig-naling systems. The association's popular NEMA 250,Enclosures for Electrical Equipment (1000 Volts Maximum),was revised for the first time since 1997. Enclosures provide

protection against access to haz-ardous electrical devices and protec-tion from the environment. Amongother revisions, a standard annex hasbeen expanded to better explain theconversion of NEMA enclosure typeratings to IEC 60529 enclosure clas-sification designations. The associa-tion also issued OS 1 and OS 2,standards governing the compatibili-ty of metal and non-metallic outletboxes with standardized wiring devices and conduit andcable systems.

Some of NEMA's most high tech standards also werereleased in the past several months.

Two updated standards related to diagnostic magneticimaging (MRI), MS 3-2003, and MS 5-2003, provide specifi-cations on the quality and accuracy of MRI devices. Thespecifications are accepted by regulatory bodies as tests forimage uniformity, geometric distortion, and slice thickness, and may also be used for acceptance tests. TS 2-2003, TrafficController Assemblies with NTCIP Requirements, has beenrevised for the first time in five years. Developed as a designguide for certain traffic signaling equipment, it is intended toreduce hazards to people and property. It covers device com-munication over a data channel with unlimited capacity andthe use of a high-speed data channel in order to reduce possi-ble malfunction.

The products listed in this edition of the guide are of thehighest calibre. Manufactured with pride by the finest compa-nies in the world, they provide for the compatible, safe, effec-tive, efficient operation of electrical devices and systems thepublic depends upon. (See NEMA member company list.)

All NEMA standards and all NEMA member companyproducts in the 2004 edition can be found on our website,www.nema.org. We encourage you to visit the site and linkto our member companies to learn how you can purchasethe products you need. You may purchase NEMA standardsby visiting Global Engineering Documents atwww.global.ihs.com.

We hope you will find the 2004 Electrical Standards &Product Guide to be a valuable and useful tool throughoutthe coming year.

This index is a quick reference guide to all of the standards available from NEMA, both NEMA and ANSI standards. Itnotes the latest version available, the price, and the page number on which you will find the title and a short description ofthe document, as well as companion standards and notices of approval or adoption by other organizations.

At least every five years, each NEMA standard is reviewed for timeliness, technical accuracy, and relevance. The datesof the reviews are published as part of the alpha-numeric standard identifier. Revisions published for NEMA standards aremade available for holders of the base standard at a nominal price. The revision is automatically included in the base stan-dard for future users and the price of the standard (base and revisions) is adjusted. When a NEMA standard is purchasedthrough IHS/Global Engineering Documents, the customer will be sent notification of the standard’s revision.

The following pages contain the titles and ordering information for standards and other publications developed by NEMAand ANSI (the American National Standards Institute) for electrical products and components. Publications are organizedby product categories and are available for purchase through Global Engineering Documents at (800) 854-7179; outside theU.S. at (303) 397-7956; or via fax at (303) 397-2740. The information is also available on their website,www.global.ihs.com. Be sure to note that, in some cases, a publication must be obtained directly from NEMA.

“Companion Standards” are other NEMA, ANSI, or IEC standards that might be of interest to the user. Standardsapproved by ANSI or adopted by the U.S. Department of Defense are so indicated. Contact information for sources for pub-lications from other organizations are provided on page 127. Manufacturers of products related to the standard are listedunder the same product category in the product and manufacturer listing, beginning on page 74.

In addition to the association’s industry standards, users may also be interested in NEMA's other publications (guides, handbooks, reports, newsletters, and brochures) covering items of interest to electrical manufacturers, which can be foundwithin their subject categories. Member and quantity discounts do not apply to these publications except as noted.

Conduit-In-Casing ConstructionPower and communication industriesare on a never-ending quest to "getthe cord long enough." Conduit-in-casing construction is one methodthat helps make the cord long enoughto get from the communication orpower source to the consumer.Downloadable at www.nema.org

Expansion Joints for PVCRigid Nonmetallic ConduitPolymer Raceway Products (PVC)Technical Committee publicationnotes that fluctuations in temperaturehave a greater effect upon polyvinylchloride (PVC) than more traditionalmaterials such as aluminum andsteel.Thermal expansion and contrac-tion have significant effects on longstraight runs of conduit; therefore, expansion joints are used to accom-modate changes in length. This pre-vents potentially harmful thermalstresses in the conduit itself or in anysupporting structures.Copies are available by contacting(703) 841-3297.

Solvent-Cementing Joints for PVC Rigid NonmetallicConduit, Duct, and FittingsFour-page application guide preparedby the Polymer Raceway ProductsTechnical Committee discusses aspectsof solvent-cementing of joints for PVCrigid nonmetallic conduit, duct, and fit-tings.Topics include: to prime or notto prime; solvent cement selection cri-teria, storage requirements; recom-mended cutting procedures for conduitor duct; cleaning procedure; applica-tion procedure; assembly precautions;and atmospheric considerations.Available for downloading from theweb (www.nema.org) or by contact-ing (703) 841-3297.
