MODELING PROCESS

The form of the central volume was designed through an empirical process of physical modeling. after an exploration of additive and subtractive processes, the final result was achieved by combining the two.

COLLABORAT IVE CONVERGENCE

ENGINEERING RESEARCH ANNEX

The project represents the synthesis of a series of abstract formal studies. The study addressed the use of sur faces to define space, the construct of a threshold, and the re-lationship of the spaces. the design uses a series of continue sur faces to define space. the series of spaces can accomodate for a wide variety of collaborative learning pro-cesses. Strong visual relationships provide transparency of activit ies within the building.

FORCES INORM The form of the cable arch bridge is determined by the way forces run through it. Two curved decks are tied together to and strengthen the bridge against lateral forces. the arch supports and decks are shaped reciprocally of eachother to keep the structure in equilibrium. The stability of the bridge was confirmed using Bentley Staad Pro Structural analysis software.

NEST CONNECTING CITY AND CAMPUSARCH 403 3 WEEKS

College park, Maryland is undergoing an urban redevelopment effort in partnership between the city and the University of Maryland. Nest is an adaptive reuse project of a vacant building that has housed many bars and lounges over its history. Nest serves as common ground for faculty, students, and citizens of college park. here they can come together to enjoy art, food and performances as well as urban research and community involvement.

EXISTING STRUCTURE The design preserves the existing structure, using it as a starting point in programatic organization and allowing it to shape some of the spaces.

TERRACED LEVELSThe outdoor terrace intersects with the build-ing to allow a space for viewing the stage, informal seating, and a relationship between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

POINTS OF ACCESSThe design features entry points from both baltimore avenue an the traditional back of the building, to improve accessibility from both the city and university.

MATERIALSPreservation of existing brick floor in gallery, stripping to bare concrete in restaurant, reuse of subtracted floor slabs as stairs.

DIGITAL ART FACADEArt projected on front facade changes accord-ing to the viewer's perspective. when in the gallery, patrons become a part of the display.

DRISKELL VOLUMEthe driskell volume is an inhabitable object in space that pro-vides walls for the display of art and relaxation spaces on the outside, and a meeting space filled with light on the inside. the floor is perforated with glass slots to allow light to reach below

The process starts with the mass of the building envelope. The topography is lifted into the building to carve away the internal courtyard. Other spaces are carved out according to lighting, views, and con-nection with the spaces on the ground. The result is a landscape within a build-ing that provides a range of spaces from introverted to extroverted.

INERTIA PROCESS The pieces for the installation were the result of an empirical process of material testing. i started by staining a series of oriented strand boards. I spray painted a layer of gradient from opacity to transparency. I then carved out pieces to reveal the bare board. Those pieces were arranged on the light table to create a stencil for screen printing. each individual board is printed with the pieces that have been displaced.

SECTION FILL - DETAIL

The arrangement of the boards was a result of the part-whole relationship. Through the whole i saw a chance to unite several similar yet desparate parts in a singlecomposition.
