Chilli Hot Chocolate (4 small cup servings)

Ingredients:• 60g Lindt Excellence Chili Dark chocolate• 40g Lindt Excellence Ecuador 75% Dark chocolate• 125ml fresh cream and a bit extra for whipping• 125ml milk• 1 tsp chilli flakes• 4 tots brandy (optional)

Break the chocolate into small chunks and place in a small saucepan on medium heat. Add the chilli flakes, milk and cream. Melt the mixture while stirring frequently until all the chocolate is melted. Reduce the heat and let the hot chocolate simmer, but be careful not to burn it. To add a bit of a kick, add the four tots of brandy. To top off your drink, whip the extra cream until it forms a peak and add a spoonful to your hot chocolate. Garnish with a few chilli flakes.

Gin Thyme Elderflower Lemonade

(8 tumbler servings)

Ingredients:

1 cup sugarsmall bunch of fresh thyme

5 cups cold water

1 cup lemon juice

1½ cups gin1L (5 bottles) Fever-Tree Elderflower Tonic Water

handful of raspberries

cucumber slicesslice of lemoncrushed ice

In a saucepan heat the sugar, thyme and one cup

of water until the sugar is completely melted. Add

the remaining four cups of water and lemon juice

and turn off the heat. When cool, add the gin while

stirring. Place the mixture in the fridge until cold.

To serve, add crushed ice to each glass and then

add 125ml lemonade mix and 125ml tonic water to

your glass. Garnish with a few raspberries, a slice

of lemon, cucumber and a wedge of fresh lemon.

One of the most noticeable trends in product design for the home at the moment, is

reducing forms and silhouettes down to simple geometric shapes. This almost child-like design treatment often veers towards the avant-garde, but the news coming out of the top trade shows internationally is that this trend is poised to break into the mainstream soon.

The thinking behind this trend is that people are tired of overwrought design and bored with minimalism. This happy medium approach sees creatives combining unusually simplistic forms together in a bare-bones approach to product design. The Dutch trend guru Li Edelkoort has already flagged the circle as the motif to watch in the coming few seasons, but it seems that they may only be one part of this design aesthetic.

One of the key brands called out for this trend at the recent Salon del Mobile fair was the Italian studio Zanotta. Designs such as the Speed sideboard epitomise this geometric design, with an emphasis on super simplistic forms.

And the trend has filtered into the discerning end of the local market too. The Solar Mirror by Okha, for example, is made up of backlit, overlapping circles and makes for a very contemporary geometric statement piece.

This building block minimalism is one of the trends you may not even notice until all of a sudden it’s everywhere. It’s deceptively simple in its thinking, but with classic and futuristic design references, it’s a perfect fit for people’s tastes in the here and now.

In tough times consumers naturally look at where they can cut back on spending. With household

budgets under pressure, many people have to look at what they can do without to make ends meet.

While it is important to scrutinise where your money is going, it’s also important to make the right decisions about what you can do without.

Unfortunately many people take the high-risk option of reducing their insurance cover or even stopping the premiums altogether, and this can end up being far costlier in the long run.

While it may be highly unlikely that your house and everything in it will go up in flames, it is vital that you consider what might happen if it did. Even if you suffered a break-in and lost a large chunk of your possessions, how would you replace them and how would your quality of life suffer?

Insurance is one of those things that you can underestimate until you really need it. And if you don’t have it when it matters, the cost far outweighs anything you would have paid in premiums.

Instead of reducing their cover, many South Africans should actually be checking that they have enough insurance to sort things out if the worst were to happen. In hard times, the last thing you want is to be burdened with

even more financial stress because your insurance was inadequate. In order to make sure you are not underinsured, you should do the following:

1Make sure that your property is insured for what it would cost

to rebuild it, not its purchase price. The value may have appreciated significantly over time. This should be reviewed at least every year, and definitely after any renovations or home improvements.

2Conduct a proper inventory of your household contents to estimate

their replacement value. The cost to replace imported items in particular would have increased notably in recent years with the drop in the value of the rand. If your household contents are not insured for their full value, your insurer may not pay out the total claim.

3Remember to insure individual items that leave the house

regularly. This includes jewellery, expensive sporting equipment or electronic gadgets like tablets or laptops. If these are stolen outside of your house, they may not be covered if they haven’t been specified on your policy.

About the area

Southdowns offers trendsetting country homes in wide open spaces with an exclusive

farm-inspired lifestyle and excellent security. The area largely consists of the Southdowns Residential Estate between Nelmapius Drive to the north, Doornkloof to the south, John Vorster Drive to the west and Irene Country Club and Dairy Farm to the east.

Known for its numerous weeping willows and the meandering Hennops River, the estate includes about 700 sites of mainly residential stands averaging 1,200m2 in size. It has approximately 50 townhouses between 126m2 and 280m2, and seven clusters between 260m2 and 400m2 in size.

This suburb’s homes mostly have earthy tones with chromadek roofs, stone walls, high-end finishes and balconies as well as entertainment areas providing picturesque views. Approximately 50ha of farmland included in the estate is used by Irene Dairy Farm and cows roam freely in this area.

Residents visit the farm directly, taking children to watch cows being milked, buy fresh milk daily or enjoy breakfast at the eateries. The estate has 50ha of conservation corridors and agricultural areas, and landscaping is done through indigenous planting.
