School yard upgrades at St. Anthony French Immersion Catholic School will include a water bottle station and the addition of soccer nets to existing posts.

“We propose a water bottle holder station because we don’t like when people leave their water bottles on the ground. We would like to put the nets on our soccer posts because then we don’t have to run to get our ball when it goes through.”

Total Cost = $5,000

Cost Breakdown:Water bottle station and soccer nets - $5,000

Install an outdoor education reading garden at Ashley Oaks Public School.

The Reading Garden would give the students a sitting area, a place to make friends, to have fun, and a place to explore nature. This fi ts into the kindergarten curriculum, which places an emphasis on exploring the natural environment. Research suggests that connecting to nature helps contribute to children’s mental, physical, and emotional health and well-being.

Total Cost = $20,000

A small playground in the kindergarten play yard at Ashley Oaks Public School.

The kindergarten playground at Ashley Oaks has some phy grass and a small piece of concrete. The yard is fenced in, with views of the primary playground and the community child care outdoor learning space. We propose adding a small playground structure to the space, to allow the children somewhere to play together and enjoy their outdoor time. Many students of our school are refugees and new immigrants to Canada, and would benefi t emotionally and socially from having a happy and safe place to play outdoors.

Total Cost = $30,000

Cost Breakdown:Playground equipment and installation - $30,000

The Westview Community Garden located at Westview Baptist Church is open to anyone in the community to rent a plot or to admire in the community. The dedicated waterline running from the church to the garden has damage and needs to be fully replaced.

The Westview Community Garden has been in operation since 2004 and has been a beautiful and thriving garden ever since. Each year the garden has returning gardeners as well as welcomes newcomers. It is one of the few community gardens in the Southwest London region and one of a few community gardens operated independently from the City of London.

Widely successful community events are being planned (Yard Sales; BBQ; Movie Nights; Fireworks) and entire streets of residents are coming out of their homes to participate. Picnic tables would provide places to sit. Picnic tables would be used by La Pommeraie School (which borders the park), numerous at-home child care providers in the village and most importantly the residents in the village to come together and celebrate.

Page 11: Neighbourhood Decision Making SOUTHWEST LONDON · Install an outdoor education reading garden at Ashley Oaks Public School. The Reading Garden would give the students a sitting area,

A half basketball court added to the park.

A basketball court has the ability to bring many health and social benefi ts to our neighbourhood. It can build connections between neighbourhood residents who might not normally interact. Paul Haggis Park currently does not tailor to many young adults and teens in the way that it could, a basketball court could bring these people together for wholesome fun and physical exercise. Additionally, many residents would be more willing to bring their little ones to the children’s park if they can also enjoy the basketball courts before or after the swing sets and slides.

Total Cost = $22,000

Install a gazebo at Raleigh Roundabout Park

Our neighbourhood has lots of young families, young children and some home child care providers. Our park has a high frequency usage but with the heat of the summer the park is almost too hot for small children all day until close to sunset as there is no shade. The gazebo would add a place with shade to the park to allow for longer play dates, creating a healthier lifestyle for the children.

Installing bat boxes in parks, especially where there are large populations of mosquitoes.

Bat boxes would increase the bat population in the area, which would help to naturally control the mosquito population in Kensel Park. Neighbours cannot use their backyards in the summer without getting several mosquito bites or spraying themselves down with heavy doses of mosquito repellent. Because of our proximity to the river and the treatment plant, there is a lot of water for mosquitoes to breed. We often see swarms of them every night in and around the area.
