Thus, theSpaniardscalledthe landNegrosaftertheblacknativeswhomtheysawwhentheyfirstcametotheislandinApril1565.Twoofthe earliest native settlements were Binalbagan and Ilog thatlater became towns in 1573 and 1584, respectively. Othersettlements were Hinigaran, Bago, Marayo (now Pontevedra),Mamalan (nowHimamaylan) andCandaguit (now a sitio in SanEnrique). After appointing encomenderos in the island, Miguel Lopez deLegazpiplacedNegrosunder the jurisdictionof theGovernorofOtoninPanay.In1734,however,theislandbecameamilitarydistrictandIlogwasmadeitsfirstcapital.TheseatofgovernmentwaslatertransferredtoHimamaylanandthereafterBacolodbecamethecapitalin1849.Theislandremainedamilitarydistrictuptoaboutthemiddleofthe19thcentury.Thenin1865,NegrosOccidentalwas raised to the category of a politicomilitary province.During this time, severalmoretownswereestablishedlikeSanCarlosandCalatrava.Religiousorders evangelized theprovinceby turns: theAugustinians,Recollects, Jesuits,Dominicans,
