    Ahmad Fuadi

Ahmad Fuadi was born in Bayur, a small village on the shores of Maninjau Lake. After graduating from Padjadjaran University in International Relations, he worked as a journalist at Tempo magazine. In 1999, he won a Fulbright scholarship for his master stud-ies at the School of Media and Public Affairs, George Washington University in Washington DC. While do-ing his studies, he also worked as correspondent for Tempo and Voice of America (VOA). They reported

on the September 11 tragedy live from the nations capital.

In 2004, Fuadi won the Chevening Award to study documentary fi lmmaking at Royal Holloway, Univer-sity of London, and also the opportunity to live and learn in Canada, Singapore and Italy. The Land of Five Towers was made into a movie in 2012 and won several awards. In 2011, Fuadi won the Liputan 6 Award, SCTV for motivation and education, IKAPI Best Writer, and First Prize for Best Fiction by Per-pusnas (The National Library). Ahmad was selected as resident at the Bellagio Center, Italy in 2012, and the following year won an award from DJKHI Kemenkumham (Directorate General of Intellectual Rights) in the novel category.

A portion of the royalties from the trilogy go to build Komunitas Menara, a volunteer-based social organi-zation that provides free schools, libraries, clinics, and soup kitchens for the less fortunate. To learn more about Komunitas Menara and their activities, see www.negeri5menara.com

In the second volume of Ahmads trilogy that began with Negeri 5 Menara(The Land of Five Towers), Alif has just graduated from Pondok Madani. He wants to learn sophisticated technology in Bandung like Habibie, and then go to America. Spirit on fi re, he returns to Maninjau and looks forward to college until his best friend Randai points out he will not be admitted without a high school diploma. How can he achieve his dream? He studies to break through the hard challenge. One after the other, storms keeps coming in. Alif is tired and starts to wonder how long

should he stand against the test. He almost quits. The man jadda wajada mantra is not enough to win in life. He remembers the second mantra taught in Pondok Madani: man shabara zhafi ra, or He who has patience will have fortune. With the two man-tras he faces the obstacles in life. Can he realize his dreams? Where will fate take him? What are the three realms with different colors? Why do Obelix, Indians, Michael Jordan, and the Rhyming Knights appear? How will God reward him for his patience and perseverance?

The End of Journey is the third book of Fuadis tril-ogy. Alif feels like hes standing on top of the world. He travels the globe, his writings are published, and he graduates with top grades. He is sure the top companies will kill to hire him, but it is the end of the nineties, when Indonesia is strangled with a monetary crisis and the country is in turmoil due to reform. One by one he receives refusal letters. A ray of hope emerges when he is hired as a journalist by a well-reputed magazine, and falls in love with a girl he used to distrust. Where will their relationship take them? He wins a scholarship to Washington, DC, fi nds a decent job and meets new friends in America.

Life is perfect, until the September 11 tragedy at World Trade Center. He is forced to re-examine his mission in life. Where did he begin and where will he end? The third mantra is, man saara ala darbi washala, or, He who walks his path shall arrive at the destination. This guides him in the journey to fi nd his mission in life. Life is essentially a journey. The End of Journey is about the consistency neces-sary to walk toward a destination, the search for a soul mate, and fi nding a safe harbor.

For author Hanum Salsabiela Rais, Europe holds the mystery of a noble culture, the civilization of Islam. 99 Lights in the European Sky tells the story of her search for the ninety-nine lights of perfection on the continent. The journey introduces her to the heroes of Islam in the past, and she fi nds peace of mind about her existence. In the end, Europe is more than the Eiffel Tower and the Coliseum. It is a land of faith.

Hanum gathers the pieces of the glory of Islam in Europe several centuries past. Furthermore, she sees the values of Islam in Europe. Islam and Eu-rope are seen as contrasts to each other; its time they are positioned as supporting each other. The book is a collection Muhammad Assads writing posted in www.muhammadassad.wordpress.com at the end of 2009.

The fi rst topic is called The Power of Charity. The article tells us the miracle that happened to the au-thor as a result of charity, he suddenly got a VVIP ticket to watch a soccer match of Brazil vs. England. The book includes verses from Al Quran or the ha-diths that connects them to the writing, because it aims to tell the readers that Islam teachings are not diffi cult and not limited within the mosque, but it covers all aspects of humanity.

Although included with verses and hadiths, the book is not exclusively for Muslims. Many non-Muslims like to read the articles because the values offered by Islam are universal ones.

Rahmatan lil aalamiin. The book targets young readers (17-30 years), in a relaxed and unpatroniz-ing tone that encourages them to think and discuss it together. The author regularly updates his blog every Friday, and the titles will be added as needed.

In this book, Mr. Alwi demonstrates the power of one individuals commitment to building bridges between two cultures. His e-mail exchanges with his students show how woefully ignorant young Americans are of Islam, and how much their negative impressions can change through exposure to sympathetic, ac-cessible Muslim intellectuals like Mr. Alwi. Their lack of knowledge suggests that American government should spend at least as much time educating its own population about Islam as it does in public rela-tions efforts directed at Muslim communities abroad.-- Sidney Jones, Director of the Southeast Asia Project, International Crisis Group

To date, the Western world seems to identity Islam with terrorism, radicalism, and in general, acting in-humanly. This is due to their limited understanding of Islam, a situation felt strongly by Dr. Alwi in his interactions with American students. I believe this book can provide accurate insights into the Islamic religion as Rahmatan lil Aalamien.-- Dr. H.C. HMA Sahal Mahfudz, President of the In-donesian Ulama Council

extensive experience, both inside and outside of the Islamic community. He is convinced that true harmony amongst religious believers must be built, fi rst and foremost, on the recognition understand-ing, and respect for the teachings, traditions, and values of other religions. His testimony of the ben-efi cial role of Islam to the world needs to be heard and shared.-- Kardinal Julius Darmaatmadja, SJ

Many critical confl icts are triggered by mispercep-tions and a lack of communication. This pattern repeats itself in the case of the religiously narrow-minded. Yet, the call for the sanctity of religion, ad-vocates that we oppose that narrow-mindedness as we explore the majesty of God through His crea-tions. Therefore, I warmly welcome Dr. Alwi Shihabs book as an example of how, through dialogue, we can become more mature, even when it concerns our deepest beliefs, in a mutual effort to make posi-tive contributions and coexist peacefully.-- Jakob Oetama, Executive Chairman, Kompas-Gramedia

Education to nurture virtuous characters begins since the baby is in the womb. One way is by read-ing Al-Quran to the baby. Reciting Al Quran increases the level of intelligence just like the classical music stimulates the babys brain especially if its done by the mother. This is proven by a lot of research, some studies even indicate that the baby bows in worship during the citing of Al Quran verses.

If we talk about clothing, the important things which we should ask are: Do the clothes which we wear refl ect our own personality? Does our way of wear-ing clothes express our identity? and Is our clothes in accordance with the law of Islam? These three questions always inspire the works of Shafi ra for 19 years, since it was founded until passing this 3-rd millennium. The fi rst two questions are about per-sonality, the last one is about obligation and duty for every Moslem. In fashion world, the question How does the way we dress communicate message about our identity becomes very important, because the way you wear clothes expresses your true identity. Publishing this book is also part of our concern on the starting of global era which forces us to be re-
