A Challenging Year

The 2009 budget shows a quarter million ringgit deficit mainly due to (a) reduction in monthly subscriptions becausemembers aged 70 and above are exempt and (b) a shortfall in food and beverage revenue. Whilst there is not much we cando about ageing, we can, however, do something about (b) i.e. members to increase patronage at all our F&B and serviceoutlets to raise income and, in turn, help balance our budget.

To remedy the situation, the Committee considered presenting two motions at the EGM of 28th December 2008, namely,an increase in monthly subscription and minimum spending. However, after due consideration, the Committee elected towithdraw the respective motions and put them on hold.

The Committee is also concerned about rules violation by members, spouses and children, especially in respect to ourdress code when they are at the Golfers’ Terrace. To help matters, we are placing signage at strategic locations and we hopeall members will abide by the rules.

Currently, the Club is constructing a dam and three irrigation ponds on Hole No. 5 of the Putra Course. The project willtake three months to complete at a cost of RM554,070.00 against a budget of RM700,000 approved earlier last year. Whileconstruction is in progress, Hole No. 5 will be shortened to 140m from the blue marker and be converted to Par 3.

In the clubhouse complex, the Committee approved the makeover and re-flooring of the Bilik Buaya and provide anannexed area for private dining with a capacity of 40 pax. When you dine on certain days of the week, you will be accompaniedby the Club’s resident band.

In ending my message, I would take this opportunity, on behalf of the President and Vice Presidentand Management Committee members, in wishing all KGNS members a belated Merry Christmas,a Happy New Year and Gong Xi Fa Cai!

2008 has been a very challenging year for the present Management Committeeas we saw prices of commodities and services escalate, thus bringing aboutincreases in our overheads for all areas of the Club’s operations. For instance, the electricity tariff went up by 26.3%, costing the Club a staggering RM75,000monthly, on average. We are, therefore, appealing to all members to help us in acollective effort to save energy and water to reduce bills.

Kelana Course Sultan’s NineHole No. 10318 metres (par-4)

This hole is reckoned to be one of the most sporting at the Kelana course, as beingthe shortest undulating hole on the second nine and a fairly easy par four.

In order to achieve a par or a birdie, your drive must go down left center, steeringclear from the long fairway bunker. There is trouble all the way down both sides as theycome in cluster of trees and thick rough.

Your ideal approach shot is to go just a little left of the mound while avoiding ayawning green site bunker on the right.

If you cannot get down in two, try not to play with a down hill putt. Also, dependingon the pin position, this pretty long green can cause disaster as any downhill puttmight result in a bogey or more.

In a competition of stroke play only, when during a play of a hole if you are doubtful of your rights orprocedure, you may, without penalty play a second ball. After that, you should, before taking further action, announce to your marker or fellow competitor of your decision to invoke this Rule (3-3a) and the ball withwhich you score if the Rules permit.

However, you must putt out both balls and report the facts to the Committee before returning your scorecard unless your scores are the same with both balls. If you fail to putt out your second ball, the penalty isdisqualification.

Note: A second ball played under Rule 3-3 is not a provisional ball.

Approximately 100 children, invitees from the Stepping Stones Living Centre and PersatuanPenyayang Nur Iman, were treated to a sumptuous lunch and fun-filled day, complete with gifts andsouvenirs. Making a star appearance was Coco the Magical Clown who delighted the childrenwith his fun magical tricks which had them all in stitches! Besides goodie bags and balloons whichwere handed out to all the children in attendance, hampers were also given to each home.

In true spirit of charity, KGNS presented cheques amounting to RM 5,000.00 to the SteppingStones Living Center, RM 5,000.00 to Persatuan Panyayang Nur Iman, and RM 1,000.00 each toPersatuan Pesakit Parah Malaysia and Yayasan Jantung Malaysia. The Social Sub-Committee takesthis opportunity to record its heartfelt thanks to all for their generous contributions to the Gala.

Members’ NightOn Members’ Night, Friday 30 October 2008, “Deeparaya” was the

featured event held at the Bilik Buaya. As it was a joint celebration ofHari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali, members were greeted with a LemangPit and a multi-coloured Kolum on arrival at the entrance of the outlet. In keeping with the festivities, authentic Indian and Malay light meals wereserved, much to the delight of the members.

Also, as the date of the two-in-one event also fell on Halloween, members were pleasantly surprised by a “monster attack” fromtwo executives of KGNS sporting Halloween masks and scaring Bilik Buayapatrons while they were at it!.

Our thanks to Charles Barnabas and Mary Jackson, who were inattendance to entertain the crowd and keep the festive spirit going all night..

for Creative KGNS KidsThere is an art to mask making with loads of fun, as some

creative KGNS kids discovered on 22nd and 29th November2008.

Held at the Poolside Terrace, the event, organised bythe Social Sub-Committee for children ages 7 – 9 years, wasdivided into two segments.

The first part of the activity was the creation of the “mould”for the mask, on 22nd November. Whilst it was a tedioustask for the children to repeatedly paste paper on emptybowls in shaping the masks, the work was fun-filled as theybegan to playfully tease one another and making new friends.By the end of the day, the children were already having asmall ‘kanji fight’, stormed with laughter and a fair amount ofsticky paste in the air!

A week later, on 29th November 2008, it was time tocolour the creations they had made with paints andunbridled imagination. With the guiding assistance of theinstructor, the children went to town in bringing their masksto life!

Adding to the fun occasion, the kids were served lightrefreshments with ice-cream included!

The Social Sub-Committee will be holding moreactivities for the children of KGNS members in the nearfuture with a view to cultivate closeness among everyone.

You are at the pit of your luck. Fortunately, there is a lucky star present to help you toresolve some of the troubles. Regardless of the problems, this will be a relatively better year than the previous.Gradually develop your fundamentals to progress further at a good pace, and all will be well. Do not spend toomuch and save more. Have tolerance, and control your emotional charges and you will have the opportunity tomeet your dream love. Staff Highlight

A typical day begins at 6.30 a.m. when, at muster,he is assigned his work schedule by the mandore;principally, it is the fairways during weekdays and greenson weekends and eve of competitions. Perianan is particu-larly proud that, barring the ravages of weather, he andhis colleagues in the Course & Grounds Department areable to continually keep playability at both the Putra andKelana at excellent, if not pristine, conditions all year round. As he puts it, “Subang is the place for golf and I am happyto see so many members on the course, some I haveknown for many years; we greet and say “hello” when wesee each other.”

Whilst the years have been kind to Perianan during histenure at KGNS, he recoils in memory of the morning afterthe freak storm not so long ago that wreaked havoc at KGNS.“All of us could not believe what we saw and we had to closethe course for 2 days and work until the night with Colonel

Chua in charge to clear the uprooted trees and repairthe damage to fairways and greens. I will never forgetthat experience, worst than the other two storms thathappened before”, Perianan recalls. The annual staffget-togethers organised by KGNS are events he alwayslook forward to, although he has had to stay off golf byreason of “swing injury”!

With 2 older sons gainfully employed and the thirdhaving just completed his SPM, Perianan is thankful to theAlmighty for his family and the good health he enjoys.Except for a short break on retirement, which is looming inthe not-too-distant future, he looks forward to continuanceof service to KGNS, should the opportunity arise! As towhy he has elected to spend all these years at KGNS, heresponded, “I like working here and also the people I workwith, my supervisor and the Course Superintendent. Also, members here are OK.”

orn in the year of our nation’s independence, Perianan @ Ravichandra s/o Amasyhas spent his entire adult life here in KGNS since he was hired as a field worker backin 1975. Today, the father of 3 sons is a jack of all trades, equally adept at driving atractor as he is at shearing and pruning when delegated landscaping chores! Thetraining and experience acquired has been largely in-house, having served under 4

Jack of All

BCourse Superintendents, thus far, in all his time at KGNS. He admits, though, that now, withmechanisation, tasks undertaken are relatively easier, and faster, compared to the early days when“almost everything was done by hand!”
