The River City Quilters’ Guild Monthly General Meeting is held on the Third Tuesday of each month at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Sacramento, located at 2425 Sierra Blvd. in Sacra-mento. The evening begins at 6:30PM with social time, and the general meeting starts at 7:00PM. There is no charge for members, guests pay $5 when a speaker is featured. Japanese Quilting
June 20, 2017
Carol Zioga was introduced to Sashiko in the 1980s when her mother tried it out. She
became hooked on the Japanese aesthetic and simplicity of the technique. Carol be-
gan her research and kimono collection in 2004, then launched Kimonomomo in 2005
while at college in Oregon. She's written articles and projects for various magazines
over the years, taught Sashiko at the Houston International Quilt Festival twice, and in
January 2017 did a Sashiko demonstration at the Tokyo Great International Quilt Fes-
tival to launch four new Sashiko kits she designed for Tulip Needle Co. In short, Japa-
nese textiles are her life.
Carol's presentation includes hands-on viewing of her collection of antique Indigo tex-
tiles from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including shibori (tie dye), sashiko, ka-
tazome (stencil dyed), and others. She covers not just what sashiko is, but why it ex-
ists, and how the cotton trade has affected Japanese culture,

Dear Members,
Another month into the year and it is already June. My
article for this month is about the duties of the guild's
Newsletter Editor.
Sue Kooiman has been our editor for the last one and a
half years. She enjoys doing the newsletter because it
keeps her in the know of what is happening in the guild.
It is a challenge that she enjoys each month to make
sure the letter comes out in a concise, accurate, and
informative manner.
One of her jobs is to edit the articles that are submitted
for clarity of idea and that they are grammatically cor-
rect. She also makes sure the articles stay on target.
There are many different columns in the newsletter.
The general guild related topics, committee reports,
treasurer’s report, etc. There is a section for
Classifieds. Any member can run an article,
free of charge, advertising something they
have for sale. The article will run for two
months. If the item is not sold by then, Sue will suggest
a few changes to the article for the third and final
month. Quilt related retail businesses are also able to
advertise for a nominal monthly fee.
Out of our 205 members, 28 are currently receiving the
newsletter by postal mail. The cost is between $20 and
$30 per month for the printing and mailing. The rest of
our members receive the newsletter over the internet.
Any member of the guild may submit an article to the
newsletter. Non-member articles will be accepted on a
space available basis. All articles must be quilting relat-
ed and are due by the 23rd of each month.
It now takes Sue between 8 - 10 hours a month to put
each issue together. In the beginning it took longer to
learn all there was to know. After the first three
months she was off and running. I hope you enjoy her
efforts and read the letter each month.

We were happy to assist Joyce Reece with the Studio
Tour on May 6 in our capacity as Community Service.
Joyce is so gracious to host Community Service every
month. Along with Joyce as hostess, Janet Van Wert
served as greeter; and Charlotte Westlake, Ruth
Schindler, Marion Emerson, Penny Berggren and I
assisted in welcoming about 30 visitors. We hope eve-
ryone that visited her home was pleased with what
they saw Community Service does and maybe we will
have some more members join us at our next meeting
as a result.
Last week we delivered 25 quilts to one of the local
hospitals. And we took in over 30 finished quilts at our
last Guild Meeting. Thanks for all your hard work.

Dear Members,
For those of you who were not at the May guild meet-
ing, I passed around a questionnaire regarding to the
workshops. The following are the results.

Saturday classes will only work if the speaker is from
the immediate area. Otherwise, we have to pay for sev-
eral nights lodging. I do have one or two local speakers
lined up for next year and I will check with them to see if
they are willing to do a Saturday workshop.
When I line the speakers up , I will ask them if they
have classes that will cover the above criteria.
I hope this will help solve the empty workshop problem.

A reminder that the Library will be at the meeting in
June and then take a 2 month break until Septem-
ber. So be sure to check out some quilting books for
your summer reading. We have books on scrap quilts,
appliqué, mini quilts, paper piecing, baby quilts, and
even organizing your sewing room! Maybe this is the
summer to try new things. Stop by the library table in
the left corner of the hall, and browse our books.

Our Memorial Day Retreat 2017 has been another
HUGE success. Mercy Center, Auburn is always a
peaceful, tranquil location. You are guanteed at all
times to see deer, squirrels and a possum or two during
your stay. The stress of daily living just melts away as
soon as you arrive.
Mercy Center has always offered healthy delicious
meals, prepared by professional chefs. Plenty of food
choices and extra for everyone who wanted more.
(Continued from page 4) Even special selection for vegetarians. A couple of us
tried a ''new to me'' dish, Baked Salmon with Dill and
we were very surprised by the delicious non-fishy fla-
vor that this dish had. Maybe not my new favorite but
a pleasant experience that we all have agreed to try
again. LOL
We played several 'quilting themed' games (Word
Searches, Anagrams, Don't Say That!, etc) with priz-
es donated by several guild members, and local quilt
stores; Meissner's, Runs With Scissors, and Quilters'
Corner. I know that we all truly appreciate the prizes
that members have made especially for our retreats. I
try to make sure that everyone wins a prize at the re-
treat. and I couldn't do that without the donations from
guild members. A very special "Thank You Hug"
needs to go out to Mairy Guthleben and Kim Brownell
for making us special gifts for this retreat. You ladies
are my Special Angels.
We had a 2 free workshops offered this weekend-
Scrappy Fabric Baskets & Covered Design Boards.
It's always lots of fun to learn a new project and use
up some of those scraps that we all have squished
into hidey-holes. Pictures will be posted on our Face-
book page soon. I still need to learn how to put in
grommets but I promise I will figure it out before out
next general meeting. LOL
And of course bunches of sewing was done by every-
one. Even a couple of the ladies finished two quilting
projects. Wow, such devotion to completing two pro-
jects, I couldn't even finish my one. Ha-Ha. Of course
it is probably because I brought the wrong foot peddle
and I refused to drive back to Citrus Heights to get it. I
spent more time socializing anyway. A retreat is the
best time to get to know my 'Quilting Sisters'. Every-
one can always use a new friend.
Next year, we are going to try to make this an extend-
ed 3 Day Retreat, Thursday - Sunday. Everyone at
the retreat voted unanimously to extend the sewing
weekend. I will find out what the new prices will be
and will let everyone know in the next newsletter.
Many have already signed up. If you are interested in
this retreat, do contact me quickly as this retreat will
have a limited space available.

To continue supplying quilts to the veterans at Mather
Field Hospital our group needs help! We are in need of
members willing to assist with all the different steps for
making these quilts. The patterns are free, the fabric
and batting are free, all we ask for is a few hours of
your time.
We will normally meet on the second Wednesday of
the month at the home of Pat Weissensee, 3817 Wil-
liam Way, Sacramento, 95821 between 10 am and 3
pm. We hope that many of you will be able to make it!
The meeting on June 14 will be devoted to organizing
the fabric bins and integrating the recent donations.

Veterans' Quilts Group Co-Chair
We are now ready to start work on the 2019 Oppor-
tunity Quilt that we will hope will be ready for judging
at the 2018 Quilt Shows & judging venues. Offering a
quilt that has won awards increases it’s attractiveness.
We will be doing a quilt that will be mainly paper
pieced and are looking for guild members that want to
help and those that may want to learn this useful quilt-
ing skill. At the June Guild meeting, I will be distrib-
uting copies of the paper-piecing patterns with re-
quested colors indicated to all interested mem-
bers. The pattern that will be handed out will be one
quarter of one of the blocks of the main quilt design.
All of the completed example pieces will then be ar-
ranged into the Incentive Quilt awarded to the lucky
guild member who sells or buys tickets for the 2019
Opportunity Quilt.
I will be seated at one of the tables around the side of
the meeting space with the Fat Quarter Exchange,
Neighborhood Circles, and Veterans' Quilt group.
Please come by and see me for details and questions
that you might have.
After the June meeting, there will be a workshop and
sew date to work on the patterns handed out.
I hope that every member of the guild is as excited as I
am in creating an award-winning and exciting quilt for
our 2019 Quilt Show. Thank you!

26 MILES ACROSS THE SEA, SANTA CATALINA IS WAITING FOR ME…
Arleeta Krolikowski reports that the weather in Catalina on May 3rd
was sunny and perfect for her son’s wedding. Alice Morgan, Arleeta, their mom, Alice Coleman, plus Lee and Carolyn Cole-man rode around Catalina on a golf cart prior to the wedding, racing up and down the hills seeing the gorgeous views. The wedding was on the beach and many tourists stopped to watch or take pictures. People they did not know asked for e-mails and offered to send their pictures. A fun time was had by all…on the island of romance, romance, romance.
GRADUATIONS & ENGAGEMENTS
Margaret Durkin’s grandson, Michael Lachica, is graduating from high school. Micheyl Barnett’s daughter, Alyssa, is graduating from Sacramento State with a B. S. de-gree in Criminal Justice. Judy Scollay’s son became engaged over Easter. It ’s not going to be a long engagement as the wedding is the end of August.

Teri Moore (just back from Pennsylvania) spent a week in Oregon with her 12 siblings (originally 14). They had a great time doing lots of much needed yard work at the five acre home-stead. They had a great time getting together, and there was one sister Teri had not seen in over 30 years. They felt very blessed. Teri had to come home to rest. Sounds like her PA trip. Jacques Tucker’s middle son (nephew?) retired after 22 years in the Navy and came home for a visit. She had all seven of her children (except oldest son) home for Mother’s Day.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Tracey List and husband Jonathan took a road trip (2,000 miles!) to Moab, Utah. They visited three national parks, two state parks and one quilt shop. Check out those legs…hubba hubba!
Kathy Mitchell, significant other Stu-art and brother Rick took a day trip to Yosemite to see the waterfalls. There is a lot of water this year and the falls are incredible. You definitely need a rain poncho if you plan to stand close. Or a 40 gallon trash bag with a hole for your head.
MISCELLANEOUS
Jacques Tucker and Helen Zinn attended the Donors and Recipients Scholarship Luncheon at Sacramento State. It was wonderful to see all the scholarship recipients. It’s time to look on the Sac State scholarship web site to apply for the RCQG scholarship that the guild offers. If you know

On April 29th, Mairy Guthleben, walked in the American River Half marathon. She finished her
first marathon in 3 hours and 28 minutes. Way to go Mairy!!
Gale Turner is waiting for inspiration to strike for her next quilt project. She has several UFOs but is having a motivation problem. In the meantime, she’s been reading mystery books like crazy. I usually take a page out of the Nike book and JUST DO IT!

2017 40th Anniversary Quilt Show News
I have been reflecting on how much being a quilter has been a blessing to my life. I started quilting when I was 19, but many times, because of small children, I put it aside. When my 2 youngest children were about to start school, we found a wonderful little quilt shop nearby called, "School House Quilts". The three of us would just go in and soak it up. It had a calming affect on all of us. It was there that I learned about RCQG.
I finally joined the guild in 1987 and since then I have met so many wonderful people. My first meeting I sat with a nice looking lady who was doing what is now quilters treasures. Not long after that, she broke her leg and suddenly I was in charge of that activity. I have since had an active roll in the guild mostly through the quilt show. I never dreamed I would be the chair.
I cherish the close friendships I have made through being involved in the guild. As I write this, I am get-ting ready to go on a 5 day quilt retreat in Tahoe City with the Granny Smith Quilters. This is our 25th year together.
I hope you also get joy out of being an active part of RCQG. I am really looking forward to helping out at the State Fair. If you have not worked the fair, it is so much fun. Chris Shores-Hague has done a remarka-ble job.
Be sure to buy or sell your Opportunity Quilt/Ruby Featherweight tickets. And keep working on your projects for the 40th Anniversary Show. It won't be long until we will be talking about getting your entry forms in and have sign-up's for the quilt show com-mittees.

Boutique co-chair for 2018

Boutique is a big job and needs some additional sup-port to really make this a good fundraiser during the annual quilt show. I will not be able to give it the at-tention it needs next year, but would be willing to stay on as a co-chair. I also have plenty of notes & tem-plates for how to run it if you’d like to take over fully. Like her Blog, Claire Witherspoon calls her lecture
“Confessions of an Eclectic Quilter”. Over the past 25
years or so she has experimented with just about every
style and technique in the quilt world. Her experimenting
has led to a wide variety of sometimes naive, sometimes
downright ugly, occasionally beautiful quilts but always
instructive. She tries to bring light to her process while
showing a sampling of these quilts.
