Crochet Pattern for a Valentine Heart Pouch

This heart-shaped pouch is a fun project for Valentine's Day or for anytime gift-giving. If you

embellish it with red and white faux flowers, as shown, it's suggestive of Valentine's Day; youcould change the heart color or the embellishments to make this design appropriate for other

    holidays or occasions.

If you're looking for an affordable, low-commitment Valentine gift to give to a friend or

colleague, you could crochet one of these pouches and then fill it with his / her favorite wrappedcandy.

I'm using my sample pouch as a holder for some of the little love notes, Valentines and gift tagsmy husband has given me.

    Materials:

y Yarn: To crochet my sample pouch, I used a worsted weight kitchen cotton in a red color thatis unfortunately no longer available. However, this pattern is appropriate for use with manyother different fibers; if you would like to make your heart a true red color like the sample

heart is, you could crochet it using acrylic, wool, novelty yarn, or whatever else looks good. Ifmaking it in kitchen cotton, a pink heart would be nice, but any yarn color could be

    interesting.

y Crochet Thread and Ribbon for Trim (Optional):If you decide to crochet your own trim,as I did, you'll need a small amount of size 10 crochet thread. I also used a small amount of

narrow ribbon to make my trim. Alternately, you could use a store-bought trim or ribboninstead of hand-crocheted trim.

y Embellishments: You can embellish your heart using faux flowers, crochetedflowers, buttons, beads, appliques, or anything else your heart desires. See some more heart

embellishment ideas in this photo gallery. If you want to make your pouch washable (mineisn't!) be sure to choose washable embellishments. Aside from my scalloped trim, my

embellishments are faux flowers by Petaloo and a bow with pearl accent by Offray.

y Sewing Thread: You'll need some sort of thread for stitching your zipper to your pouch. Iused size 10 crochet thread for this, although you'll probably want to use actual sewing thread

    instead.

y Zipper: You'll need a six inch zipper in a color that closely matches your chosen yarn.y Crochet Hooks:If you're crocheting your own the trim, you will need two different crochet

hooks -- one for crocheting the pouch, and one for crocheting the trim. For my trim, I used a

small steel crochet hook; for the heart pieces, I used a size H / 5.0 mm aluminum crochethook.

y Tapestry Needle: Used for or weaving in endsy Lining:My pouch is not lined, but you can add a lining if you want to. If you do, you'll need

some fabric for the lining. Note that my instructions below omit any lining; my crochet workis tight enough that my pouch could even serve as a change purse and I wouldn't be worried

    about losing any coins.

    Finished Size:

At it's widest point, my finished pouch measures approximately 7.5 inches; it measures about 6.5

    inches high.

    Beanbag Animal Apron

    What you'll need:

y Gathered eyelet - 8 1/2" long, about 2 1/2" widey Gathered eyelet - 8" long, about 1" widey 1" piece of white sew-on Velcro or two small snapsy Thready Scissorsy Needle or sewing machine

    How to make it:

    1. The widths for the eyelet are approximate - 1/4" wider or narrower will work for either piece.IWe measured straight across from the rippled edge to the outer edge of the taped edge. The

length of the eyelet is measured at the tape edge.2. If you're making the apron for a laying down beanbag animal (dog, cat, etc), it will fit better if

    you trim the 8 1/2" x 2 1/2" eyelet to be 7 1/2" x 2 1/2".3. Take the 8 1/2" x 2 1/2" piece of eyelet, and turn under both cut edges by 1/4" (to the wrong

side) and stitch them down to finish the back edge of the skirt.4. Cut the 8" x 1" eyelet into two 4" pieces to make the shoulder bands.5. Attach the shoulder bands to the center of the skirt eyelet, overlapping 1/4", with the raw edge

inside the skirt. Sew them on with a running stitch or machine stitch.

    6. Attach the other end of the shoulder bands to the back of the skirt at the center (one on eachside/edge), with the raw edges inside and 1/4" overlap. Stitch.

    7. If you're using Velcro, cut it in half to make a long narrow rectangle. Save the other pieces foranother outfit. Sew the velcro or snaps to the upper part of the two sides of the back of theskirt.

    Tips:

This apron fits upright beanbag animals best, like bears, bunnies, etc. It also workswell on beanbag animals that lay down, too.

    Felt and Button Christmas Tree

    What you'll need:

y Green Felt large enough to cut two tree patternsy Needle and thready A few pins or small safety pinsy Fiberfill or cotton balls for stuffingy An assortment of buttons and beads. We got some cute little kid buttons shaped like animals,

fruit, stars, etc, along with an assortment of colorful round buttons. Some stores have assorted

buttons you can scoop by the cup for cheap.y Ribbon or yarn to use to hang the treeHow to make it:

    Making the Trees

Read all the directions before starting.

    Step 1 - Print Patterns

Choose the size of tree you want to make. As not all printers print exactly the same size, twopattern sizes are included. Of course, you may make up your own.

Tree PatternSmall Tree 4 1/4" tall

    Large Tree 6' tall

Step 2 - Cut Out Felt TreesCut out two identical trees from green felt. It's pretty important that the trees be identical, so this

is something for an adult to do for a very young child. Set aside one of the trees.Step 3 - Sew Buttons and Beads on the Tree

  • 8/3/2019 Needle Crafts for Geriatrics

    13/21

Sew an assortment of buttons and/or beads to the tree. Try not to sew any right near the edge, because that is where you'll have to sew the two trees together. You can pick a fancy button for

the top of the tree - we found star buttons. You do not have to tie off the threads when goingfrom one button to the next, just make the stitch to the next button on the back of the tree - don't

worry if it looks a bit messy, that part will be inside.

Step 4 - Add Ribbon for HangingTake the ribbon or yarn you want to use the hang the tree and sew it to the felt tree that does

NOT have the buttons on it.

Step 5 - Attach the back to the front

Take your two trees and put them together, right sides facing out. That means that the buttons are

showing on the front of the tree, and the ends of the ribbon to hang the tree with are hiddeninside the tree. Use a few pins to hold the tree together, and then stitch around the outside, except

for the bottom of the trunk. Small safety pins are a safe alternative to straight pins if making withsmall children. You can use a small running stitch (just up and down) or use an overcast stitch. If

    Ican get the time,

I'll illustrate the stitches here.Leave one side of the trunk open, and stop sewing for a moment. You don't have to cut the

thread, but you do need to do the next step before you finish stitching.

    Step 6 Stuff

Take a bit of stuffing - either fiberfill or cotton balls, and push it into your tree. Use your fingers

or a pencil to push bits of it into the points of the tree. The tree just needs a bit of stuffing tomake it plump, it should still be a flat shape when you are done.

Step 7 - Stitch it closed

Once you are pleased with how your tree is stuffed, sew the last part of the trunk closed.

    You're Done!

You might want to write your name and the date on the back of the tree, and maybe a shortmessage. Hang your tree up, give it as a gift, use it as the tag on a gift, or use it to mark place

settings at your holiday table (write the name of the person you are giving it to on the back of thetree instead of your name).

    of a dime. Cut out.

    3. Fold the top of the circles down about 1/8". These will be the ears.4. On your paper walnut, glue the four inch piece of yarn about 1/2" inside the paper. This is the tail. Put

More Fun than a Basketful of Rainforest Monkeys!!!

Bring out the nature lover in you with Red Heart SuperSavers new color, Amazon. Iexperimented in the round with the Twin Hdc stitch. I was so pleased with how the yarn formed

a pattern that looked just like a mossy tree trunk. I recycled a plastic top from a large yogurtcontainer and placed that in the bottom of the basket for more stability.
