PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE NEDA is Going Green! BY KATHY MCHUGH Don’t forget – the Tip is going green! This is the last issue of the Tip that you will receive in print. At this time next month, look for electronic notification of the Tip’s availability and find there the same high quality information, photos, and analysis that you are accustomed to seeing in print. Hope fully you will also begin to see imbedded features like links to special sponsor deals, videos and more. As I wrote last month, if you are unable to receive the Tip electronically, please write to me at [email protected], or 64 Pearl Street, Charlestown MA 02129, and I’ll make special arrangements for you to receive a print version for the rest of this membership year. We’ll see how that goes and whether we will need to adjust future membership rates for those who cannot receive it electronically, as most other organizations do. May 2014 NEDA Fall Symposium returns to Boston area! SAVE THE DATE! The New England Dressage Association Fall Symposium will be held November 1 & 2, 2014 at Apple Knoll in Millis, MA. The Symposium will be facilitated by Ingrid Klimke and Dr. Ina Goesmeier over the two days. The topic is to be determined so watch for updates in future newsletters and Tip of the Hat publications. There will also be books authored by Ingrid Klimke available for sale as well as a book signing session. NEDA is currently working to reserve a block of rooms at the Hampton Inn and the Crown Plaza in Natick. We will be announcing the date range to make reservations and code for those rooms as soon as they have been finalized. This is an event not often available, so don’t miss the opportunity to participate in this stellar educational event! Details will be posted on the website, www.neda.org, in the near future. See you there!!! We are all about taking advantage of the last print issue, so this month you’ll find a centerfold! NEDA Fall Symposium returns to Boston area!

We are all about taking advantage of the last print issue, so this month you’ll find a centerfold! No, not that kind. . . it’s a nice poster for you to remove and post in your barn, encouraging your barn mates to join NEDA. We hope you’ll do that and

tell them about all the great stuff you get – membership in USDF, Equine Journal, news, access to the scholarships that NEDA has sponsored for many years to support amateurs and professionals as they seek to improve their skills, and educational activities.

Speaking of educational activities, are you and your friends aware of the NEDA Education Outreach program? It’s one of NEDA’s newer and most popular programs. In case you’ve been wondering what it is and how you can participate, here’s the scoop. The program was devised in order to help insure that Region 8 (New York and New England) has a rich array of successful educational activities throughout the region that are available to dressage enthusiasts. We help insure the success of smaller clinics and educational events organized by local dressage clubs, barns, and trainers by giving them access to a wider audience through NEDA’s vast reach that includes the Tip newsletter, Constant

Contact emails, Facebook, and our website calendar. In return, NEDA members are offered a discount for attending. So as a NEDA member, you need to be sure to check out our outreach calendar and stay on top of our emails to find out about great stuff going on in your region and the chance to attend at a discount. If you are organizing an event and seeking to participate in the outreach program, there are two levels available at this time. Tier I is basically free advertisement for your event in exchange for an auditing discount to our members. Tier II was developed to help give a great educational event a little financial help when and where needed. More information is available on the NEDA Education Outreach page or please email [email protected] and we’ll be glad to help get you started. Time to start planning your summer now!

region 8 neWs

YAY! Spring is here! Our first shows in Region 8 are open. Are our equine Friends ready? Have you prepared yourself ? Do you have a current coggins? Are you memberships all up to date? Do I sound like a show secretary? Sorry but I know how those first shows are. So be proactive and get the paperwork done.

A reminder to Nominated PM Delegates – please send in your acceptance. Deadline is April 15th. As a Participating Member, you are represented by delegates that you vote into that position. Remember that notice you get in June to vote…That would be it!!! These people have agreed to go to the convention on their own money, taking time out of their busy schedule, and vote on issues at the BOG, Board of Governors, for you. While some GMO, Group Member Organizations, like NEDA, pay or help pay some of these expenses for their delegates, these PM delegates get nothing from the Region. The Fern Feldman PM Fund was set up for this but it has not been funded well. So we are going to start

investigating items to sell for Region 8 to raise some funds. Like hats, polos, etc… More news to come!

While it has been several years, as I cannot remember the last one, on Saturday, April 5th, we held a spring Region 8 business meeting (outside of the convention). It was a small group (but a quorum) and some SKYPE’d in until I lost power, but it was productive. Minutes were taken and once they are compiled, they will be on the website for you to read.

The main business was two items. First, competitors going to the US Finals in Lexington, KY will get a Region 8 saddle pad and other items like hat, coffee mug….All with Region 8 on it of course! There will need to be some fundraising but I think we can get it done!

The USDF Convention in Boston was the main topic. We will need volunteers to help with the USDF registration desk and welcome booth. Susan Rainville will be heading the organization of the welcome booth but she will be needing ideas and help also. It happens this is the 25th

Anniversary of the Certified Instructors and Region 8 has held the most Certification testing and has the most Certified Instructors. Hence, Connecticut Dressage Assoc (who did many testings early on for this program) and D4K (who provides scholarships for the program) are giving funds for a ‘meet the certified instructors’ gathering. It will be a great success as food is involved!!! NEDA has really stepped up big time and will host the Welcome party on Thursday Night at Ned Devines at Faneuil Hall.

Please note the next meeting will be October 25th. I will be confirming the same place and same time.

Our website is becoming more and more important. We have many notices and information on the site. So please check 1 to 2 times a month. We are also keeping our facebook page updated with posts. So if you have not ‘liked’ us yet…please do.

See you on the Centerline…

May 24-25, 2014

An exceptional horsewoman in her own right, retired international 4* judge Angelika Frömming has ridden with some of Germany’s best trainers - names like Paul Riemann, Heinrich Boldt, Udo Nesch, Willi Schultheis, and Ottokar Pohlmann. A great proponent of classical principals, she has enjoyed an illustrious competition career and, until her retirement in 2008, responsibility for judges’ training and examination, teaching not only how to give marks, but to justify and explain them in a manner from which the rider can pro t. Auditing fees for NEDA members: $65/day. Please register on the Equestrian Center web site by April 30.

$upport the $pring $how:NEDA is getting ready for the 2014 competition season and the Spring Show will be here in a matter of weeks. This show has always been successful and a crowd pleaser with competitors and spectators. In order to keep it a financial success, competition management is asking for some support from our members in the form of Class Sponsorships.

In 2013 we had nearly 60 classes spread over the two days of the show but only 10 class sponsors. It would be great if we have sponsors for every class. You as an individual, a farm or just a group of friends can sponsor can a class for just $35.

The show will be offering classes from Training Level 1 through Grand Prix and this one way you can let people know you support NEDA. All you have to do is send a check for $35 per class, made out to NEDA, your name as you wish it to appear in the program* and your choice of class you wish to sponsor.

Thanks for your support.

18 A TIP OF THE HAT | NEDA.ORG May 2014

Can’t I just start a fitness program and be done with it?

Of course you can. So, everyone, heave a collective sigh of relief. Your world has not just become more complicated by something called a wellness program.

Often, when riders talk to me about fitness programs, they ask me for the exercise(s) that will transform their riding. I can’t blame them for wanting a quick fix. So much of what they’ve read or seen takes that single-solution approach. It’s my job to help riders find a comprehensive fitness program they enjoy doing, are willing to invest in, and one that shows them results in and out of the saddle.

Wellness programs have captured my attention as something riders can create

for themselves and get more from the work we do together. That all sounds great, right? But, what’s a wellness program?

Wellness programs, or wellness plans, are not new; we’re just becoming more aware of them. Over the last several years, what we now call mind/body approaches like meditation, bodywork, yoga, acupuncture and more, have become mainstream. Ironically, many of these methods are centuries old, but to us Westerners, they’re new. Wellness programs go beyond the mind/body disciplines/approaches and help you create a blueprint for your life.

Certainly, things like yoga, meditation or even a glass of wine might be part of your wellness program. Wellness programs are not another way of packaging or describing psychological counseling,

despite the introspective nature and process of creating your own wellness plan as you’ll learn.

For more on the components of a wellness program, see the sidebar to this article.

Creating a personal wellness program is not the easiest thing you’ll ever do, and there are myriad ways of creating your own plan. This article does not tell you ‘how-to’. Rather, it’s an introduction to a fascinating subject. Anticipate investing three to six months to design and to begin to live your plan. Results will follow, and they will be lasting.

There are many variations of this chart, but the themes are all similar. Your individual wellness sits at the confluence of multiple aspects of your life. The challenge is in balancing those aspects.

Fitness: Part one oF tWo

Make it a Part of Your Overall Approach to WellnessBy Lisa carusone

Page 19: NEDA May 2014 Tip of the Hat

A TIP OF THE HAT | NEDA.ORG May 2014 19

No single piece of this pie outranks another. While it’s great to be physically fit, it’s no more important to your overall wellness, for example, than your “social” fitness.

To learn more about what these seven aspects mean, read this article’s sidebar.

Feeling stressed? Or out of shape? Before you take that stress management course (or have another glass of wine), or join a gym (or have another glass of wine), sketch out a chart like the one above that reflects your own life. How balanced is what you draw? You can still take the stress management course, join the gym and enjoy the wine (in moderation, right?). But with a wellness plan to guide you, as you make choices, you’ll be making decisions with a holistic view to your life and what you need to do to create more balance.

You might find you don’t even need the gym or another course. The glass of wine? That’s your decision!

Is this kind of balance even attainable?

In short, yes. But it’s less about creating a static model, and more about knowing that while your pie pieces may change over time, your goal is to bring them into balance as often as possible, and for as long as possible. Developing strategies to do this is the challenge. That is a very personal part of creating your own approach to wellness, and beyond the scope of this article.

Next time: A Fitness Program for Riders (It’s Not Just About Pilates Anymore)

About the author:

Lisa Carusone is a classically trained Pilates instructor, a level-1 certified Resistance Stretch instructor and is trained to teach TRX.

A competitive dressage rider, Lisa studies periodically with rider biomechanics coach Mary Wanless. She and her husband John live in Weston, MA.

Defining Wellness

Emotional wellness – Can you manage through the challenges and changes life brings? Emotion wellness means being able to productively share your feelings and express what is important to you regardless of where on the emotional spectrum those feelings are.

Intellectual wellness – Are you open to, and interested in, learning something new? And, can you take what you learn, apply it and make it a contribution to other areas of your life?

Physical wellness – How healthy are you and how healthy is your lifestyle? Can you get through your daily activities and still feel physically fine? Without becoming a monk, can you establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Social wellness – The ability to relate and connect to others, social wellness includes building and maintaining relationships with family, friends, co-workers and members of the larger community.

Environmental wellness – The condition of the world we live in is, in part, your responsibility. What kind of impact do you have on our planet?

Financial wellness – Have you struck a balance between your individual wellness and your level of financial preparedness? This doesn’t mean you have to make Forbes magazine’s top earners list. But it does mean that you should feel confident that you have control over your finances.

Spiritual wellness – This doesn’t mean how often you go to church (or temple or…). Rather it asks you to explore the level of peace, harmony and connection to a common purpose you feel and manifest.
