    to be precise.

    - Sterncleidomastoid- Scalenes- Platysma- Digastric- Omohyoid- Sternohyoid

    - Sternothyroid- Mylohyoid- Stylohyoid- Geniohyoid- Thyrohyoid

    (And a partridge in a pear tree.)

    The neck muscles attachto various bones of theskull, spine, thoracic cage,and shoulder girdle.

    However, the neck region is hometo more than just neck muscles;muscles of the head, spine, and

    thorax also attach in this area.

    Well start with one of thelargest neck muscles (with

    the longest name):the sternocleidomastoid.

    The sternocleidomastoid isoften also classified with thelateral cervical muscles.

    It arises from two heads, or twodifferent points of origin, and isresponsible for movements of thecervical vertebral column and head.

    Factoid: Its two points of origin are the upper

    part of the anterior surface of the manubriumand the superior border, and the anterior

    surface of the medial third of the clavicle.

    The sternocleidomastoidis innervated by the

    Accessory Nerve (XI) andbranches from the anteriordivisions of the cervicalnerves (C02, C03).

    The scalenus muscles,or scalenes, are

    sometimes classified inthe lateral vertebralregion.

    It is a group of three, made upof the anterior, medius, andposterior scalenes.

    Factoid:Scalene comes from the Latin wordscalenus, meaning uneven or unequal.

    The scalenes areinnervated by theanterior divisions of

    the lower cervicalnerves(C03--C08).
