LED Backlighting, The Greener, Slimmer, Brighter Option

LED stands for ‘light emitting diode’, which have been in use for many years. LED are semi conductors which create light by exciting phosphor through UV light. Traditionally they were used as signal lights in many forms and shapes while offering a very limited amount of usable light. They come in various shapes and colours.

As technology has made significant advances over the last few years, LEDs have become a significant light source for a large number of products including LCD displays. LEDs are now powerful and cost effective enough to replace the conventional CCFL backlights which have traditionally been used as a light source for LCD products. There are currently 2 ways to use LEDs in a LCD panel, both approaches have the typical advantage of LEDs such as the absence of mercury and lower power consumption.

Which Backlight Technology

EDGE LED BACKLIGHTING

Edge LEDs have a row of white LEDs at the top and bottom. A professional 55” screen with 600cd/m² brightness such as the MultiSync X551S will have approximately 296 LEDs in total delivering similar brightness to CCFL, but consuming up to 50% less power. Edge LED is currently dominating the market because it enables a very slim design which takes LCD product design to a new level. Professional screens such as the X461S and X551S are as slim as 43,3mm thanks to edge LED design.

DIRECT LED BACKLIGHTING

Direct LED systems, which are also called “full array”, have many rows of LEDs across the entire screen similar to the array of CCFL lamps. A 55” screen such as MultiSync X551UN features six rows of LEDs with 160 LEDs in each row. Direct LED has an advantage in the area of picture quality and brightness. Because the LEDs are spread evenly across the screen the brightness uniformity is superb. It is also easier for direct LED systems to achieve higher brightness levels while power consumption is lower than that of CCFL systems but higher than edge back light displays.

Products in the professional area are using white LEDs while some high end TVs feature red, green and blue LEDs. (RGB LEDs). RGB LED arrays are a lot more expensive but deliver superior colour quality similar to CCFL system with wide colour gamut (WCG). Another feature common to consumer products is local dimming which enhances contrast. Darker areas in the content are supported by a dimming of the LEDs in that area.

LED backlights have become very common in TVs and also desktop monitors. Hardly any new product launched today (mid 2011) comes with CCFL backlights any more. In the professional arena, the adoption has been slower with the need to establish trusted performance first. NEC are the first to launch a fully professional product with a truly professional panel (MultiSync X461S).

Cost of LED backlights are still higher compared to CCFL which has tempted some suppliers into launching products with consumer grade (effectively TV) panels as professional ready products. Long term quality issues, glossy surfaces and brightness levels as low as 300cd/m2, make the relevance of these products to genuine professional applications questionable.

The hotter the screen gets the more the display’s life time is reduced. LED Edge Backlight technology was the ideal choice for the XS Series with it’s ability to deliver brightness with decreased power use and less weight. It also offers reduced heat output and eliminates the use of mercury in backlighting.

In particular, the shallower profile of Edge LED technology allowed for a reduction in the overall display depth to less than 4.4cm, with no performance compromises. The XS Series incorporates a 600 cd/m2 brightness panel, 24/7 performance, a wide selection of connectivity options, including DisplayPort and our latest STv2 (OPS Standard) Expansion Slot and all the features you would associate with our Reference MultiSync® P Series Displays.

LED EDGE AND DIRECT BACKLIGHTING COMPARED

For the new NEC X551UN 55” Ultra Narrow Display we chose ‘Direct LED Backlighting’ over ‘Edge Backlighting’, for it’s optimum image quality and long term uniformity together with all the other benefits associated with LED backlighting, where a stylish ultra shallow display is not a priority.

SINGLE SERVICE POINT

An NEC Display Solution that incorporates an Option Board uniquely gives the customer one service contact and matching warranties for the display and the board and in the case servicing is required, a slot product can easily be removed and serviced separately with the display in tact.
