FALL 2014

Eric KnollUniversity of NebraskaAssistant Professor of Practice for Skilled and Technical Sciences in the Department of Ag Leadership, Education and Communication

Welcome!

Page 29: Nebraska Career Education STS Fall Workshops

Today there are 450 Industrial Technology Teachers in Nebraska middle schools and high schools

Over 20% could retire in the next few years

Without qualified teachers, Skilled and Technical Science programs will not survive

What is the Need?

Page 30: Nebraska Career Education STS Fall Workshops

Grow our own

Identify students of interest throughout the state

Recruit secondary students and parents

Educate students and parents about this career path

What is the Solution?

Page 31: Nebraska Career Education STS Fall Workshops

Turn to the person next to you and talk about what you like about your profession

Talk about what you would share to encourage one of your students to become an STS teacher

What Do You Think?

Page 32: Nebraska Career Education STS Fall Workshops

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Community Colleges in Partnership

The new Skilled and Technical Sciences program is a partnership between UNL’s Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication (ALEC) Southeast Community College (SCC) and Metropolitan Community College (MCC).

What is the 2+2 Program?

Page 33: Nebraska Career Education STS Fall Workshops

The Best of Both Worlds

◦ The partnership builds on the existing strengths of each school without placing additional strains on budget resources

◦ SCC and MCC students will have access to current technology and will learn tools, machines, and processes specific to a variety of career paths

◦ Students will complete UNL coursework already part of ALEC’s successful teacher preparation program

How Does It Work?

Redefining Programs of Study

POS creates a pathway from secondary to postsecondary education and/or work through a sequence of academic and technical courses, extended learning opportunities and support activities.

CTE Sequence of Courses = sequence of a minimum of 3 semester courses

Page 49: Nebraska Career Education STS Fall Workshops

Why Do We Care about POS?

• College and Career Readiness• Student transitions between

secondary and postsecondary and into workforce

• Coordinated and sequenced curriculum

• Postsecondary credits

Page 50: Nebraska Career Education STS Fall Workshops

Be Aware!

• Work is being done on a NEW state accountability system

• Should be done by December 2014

• Career Education is in 5 of the 6 tenets

• PoS Information and Course Coding are VERY Important to help your school rank well!

• Courses must be a 90% match based on course benchmarks

• Course titles may vary as course code numbers are reported to NSSRS

2014-15 Skilled and Technical Sciences Local Course Alignment

Each teacher/high school should complete the following table as you align your local courses to the NDE course titles, course codes and course standards. Content matches if 90 percent of the benchmarks are incorporated in your local course. When returning to school, please provide a copy of this page to your principal, counselor, and/or the individual at your school who enters courses into the NSSRS (Student Data Management System) when reporting to NDE. Personal Leadership Inventory

• The Personal Leadership Inventory is a series of self-assessments SkillsUSA members may use to evaluate and grow important skills for life and career. The self-assessments included in the Personal Leadership Inventory focus on the following roles students play: team member, leader, employee, citizen and being an effective individual.

Page 86: Nebraska Career Education STS Fall Workshops

Customer Service Training

l• Developed with input from SkillsUSA industry

partners including Lowe’s, Mosaic, Irwin and Toyota, this new online program trains students on the practical skills required by customer service professionals.

• In 10 lesson levels, students learn what customer service is, why it is important and what constitutes excellent customer service. Through virtual, simulated scenarios, students test their knowledge and explore the qualities required for exceptional customer service skills in any field. Cost is $7.50 per license

Page 87: Nebraska Career Education STS Fall Workshops

CareerSafe Online Safety Training

• SkillsUSA’s Alliance with CareerSafe• One young person is killed every five days in

work-related accidents. In order to help combat this alarming statistic, SkillsUSA has formed an alliance with CareerSafe, a safety training program. The CareerSafe program offers 10 safety training modules designed to provide high school and college students with the fundamental safety information needed in the workplace.

Page 88: Nebraska Career Education STS Fall Workshops

Student2Student Mentoringl• The Student2Student program gives high school

students the chance to serve as mentors to younger middle or elementary school students. Everyone benefits from this important program. Business and industry gets the opportunity to positively influence its next generation of workers; high school students will gain greater self-esteem as they instruct the children; and the middle/elementary students will become more aware of their career options at an early age and will make important contacts, perhaps even important friends, to serve them in the years ahead.

Page 89: Nebraska Career Education STS Fall Workshops

In April 2012 SkillsUSA signed a partnership agreement with Rebuilding Together. Their mission is to preserve and revitalize houses and communities assuring that low-income homeowners – particularly the elderly, the disabled and families with children – live in

warmth, safety and independence. Rebuilding Together aspires to make a sustainable

impact on the community.
