huskers hosT Joe CiPriaNo ClassiCThe Joe Cipriano Classic features seven teams – Nebraska, Kent

State, Valparaiso, Tulane, Nebraska-Omaha, Bethune-Cookman and Chicago State – playing four games apiece from Nov. 13 to Nov. 24. The Devaney Center will serve as one of the four host sites, and the Huskers will take on Valparaiso, Nebraska-Omaha, Tulane and Kent State during the next two weeks.

The event honors the many contributions of Joe Cipriano to the Nebraska basketball program. He served as the Huskers’ head coach from 1963 until 1980, when he died of cancer just four days short of the start of his 18th season. His teams at Nebraska posted a 253-197 record and made three postseason appearances. He was a three-time Big Eight Coach of the Year (1967, 1978 and 1980) and his 253 wins at the time of his death were 167 more than any previous basketball head coach at Nebraska. Cipriano coached the Huskers to a 20-5 record and a No. 11 national ranking in 1965-66, the Huskers’ first winning season in 15 years and the most wins at Nebraska since 1920. The team is considered by many to be the best basketball team in the program’s 117-year history. The following season, he guided NU to its first postseason appearance, becoming the first Big Eight program to play in the NIT and his 1967-68 squad won the Big Eight Holiday Tournament, Nebraska’s only title in the event’s history. In the 1970s, his teams finished below the .500 mark only once, while his most successful Husker team of the decade was in 1977-78, which tied the school record for wins at the time with a 22-8 mark and reached the quarterfinals of the NIT.

The Cipriano family will be honored during the final night of the tournament on Saturday, Nov. 24 during a special halftime ceremony.

sCouTiNG Nebraska-omahaNebraska-Omaha comes to town with a 1-3 record following a 76-52 loss to Tulane in its first game of the Joe

Cipriano Nebraska Classic on Friday. The Mavericks are in their second year as a Division I program and first as a full member of the Summit League. UNO is playing a full Division I schedule and is in the midst of a 10-game road trip which will last until Dec. 15. Eighth-year coach Darrin Hansen brings back a lineup which returns four starters from last year. The Mavericks were picked to finish ninth in the Summit League preseason poll and have lost three straight following a 77-64 win over Northern Illinois. On Friday, UNO dropped a 76-52 decision to Tulane, as the Mavericks shot just 29 percent.

Senior John Karhoff leads UNO with 12.3 points per game, while Alex Phillips comes off the bench an averages 11.8 points per game, including 7-of-13 from 3-poitn range.

Nebraska-uNo series hisToryNebraska leads the regular-season series, 2-0, but Sunday’s matchup will be the first with both programs at

the Division I level. In Nebraska’s last meeting which came at the start of the 2006-07 season, Aleks Maric had 29 points and 10 rebounds, while Jamel White added 18 points in a 76-62 victory. The only other previous matchup was a 96-62 win on Jan. 25, 1988.

lasT Time ouTNebraska built a 14-point lead and held on down the stretch, picking up a 50-48 win over Valparaiso in the opening

game of the Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic . The Huskers won the game on the defensive end of the floor, holding Valparaiso to just 34 percent shooting and 2-of-15 from 3-point range. The preseason favorite to win the Horizon League, the Crusaders came into Thursday’s game averaging 77 points per game and shooting 54 percent from long range.

While Valparaiso struggled from long range, junior Ray Gallegos enjoyed a strong night from beyond the arc for Nebraska, hitting a career-high four 3-pointers and finishing with 14 points. Gallegos, who had a career-high 16 in NU’s opener against Southern, was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Senior Brandon Ubel led the Huskers in scoring with 17 points and five rebounds, including a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to provide the Huskers with breathing room.

Nebraska, which led by six at halftime, used a 10-0 spurt early in the second half, as Gallegos drained a pair of 3-pointers to push NU’s lead to 14. The Huskers led 48-37 with 7:21 remaining and withstood one final charge by Valparaiso for the win, as NU did not make a field goal down the stretch.

In May of 2010, Lincoln voters passed a measure for the Pinnacle Bank Arena in the Haymarket District in downtown Lincoln.

Ground was broken on the 15,223-seat facility in September of 2011 and it is set to open in September of 2013. The $180 million dollar Pinnacle Bank Arena will be the home of the Husker men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as concerts and other programming throughout the year.

worTh NoTiNG From The valParaiso Game•-Nebraska improved to 3-0 all-time against Valparaiso, as

Thursday’s game was the first between the schools since 1920. •-Brandon Ubel reached double figures for the second straight

game, scoring a game-high 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor and 5-of-6 from the line. In his last eight games dating back to the end of the 2011-12 season, he’s shooting 64 percent from the field and averaging 11.8 points per game.

•-Ray Gallegos totaled 14 points in the win, marking the second time in his career he has scored double figures in consecutive games. The other occurrence was from Dec. 2-6, 2009 (vs. UT Pan American and Creighton).

•-Gallegos’ four 3-pointers were a career high, as he had three against UT-Pan American on Dec. 2, 2009.•-NU held Valparaiso, which was 26-of-48 from 3-point range in its first two games to 2-of-15 shooting from

long range. Valparaiso was shooting 52.5 percent from 3-point range and averaging 77.0 ppg as a team entering the game.

•-Valparaiso’s 48 points was its lowest total in 29 games, as Ohio State held the Crusaders to 47 points on Nov. 25, 2011. Over the last three-plus seasons, Valparaiso has been held to 50 points or less four times.

•-The Huskers held Horizon League Player of the Year Ryan Broekhoff to just eight points on 2-of-11 shooting, as Dylan Talley did most of the work on the defensive end, holding him in single figures for just the sixth time in the last 37 contests.

•-Nebraska’s 50 points equals the fewest the Huskers have scored in a win since a 50-44 win over Oregon State on Dec. 12, 2009.

CreeP, walk, Crawl ruNWith four new starters and a 10-player rotation which featured three current or former walk-ons, it has taken

some time to implement a new offensive system and the headline has been a common mantra of Coach Miles during his first season on the job. The Huskers are shooting 45 percent after two games after shooting just 40.3 percent in NU’s lone exhibition. Nebraska is also averaging just 12 turnovers per game despite having to replace its top three ball-handlers from last season.

ubel looks To exPaNd GameThe veteran of the Husker lineup, senior Brandon Ubel

will be heavily counted on for the Big Red this season, and provided the Huskers with that leadership in the opener. The senior from Overland Park, Kan., leads the Huskers in both scoring (19.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.5 rpg), ranking fourth in the Big Ten in scoring and third in rebounding. Ubel posted his second career double-double in the season opener, totaling 21 points and 12 rebounds against Southern. On Thursday, Ubel once again led NU in scoring with 17 points and added five rebounds.

The 6-foot-10 forward is the Huskers’ top returning rebounder (5.3 rpg) and second-leading scorer (6.7 ppg) and has the skills that could flourish in Tim Miles’ new offensive system. Throughout his career, Ubel has been one of NU’s top shooters, as he is a career 80.9 percent shooter from the foul line, including 82.5 percent during his junior year. He is now just six free throw attempts from qualifying for Nebraska’s career list in free throw percentage, where he would rank fourth on the Husker career list. Ubel has the shooting range that reaches out to the 3-point line, including his freshman year when he went 11-of-21 from 3-point range.

Ubel closed out his junior season by playing some of the best basketball of his career, averaging 9.3 points on 68 percent shooting, 5.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game in the Huskers’ final six contests. He reached double figures in scoring seven times in 2011-12, including a season-high 17 points against Iowa on Feb. 28, on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the floor.

reTurN oF The redshirTsWhile Nebraska had six returning letterwinners back from the 2011-12 team, it is a pair of redshirts who will

play a major role in the Huskers’ fortunes this season. Senior center Andre Almeida and junior guard Ray Gallegos have played major roles early on.

Almeida missed all of last season following a knee injury after playing 30 games in 2010-11, but has been healthy this fall. He is averaging 3.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. Almeida had five rebounds and three blocks in Thursday’s win over Valparaiso. In 2010-11, he averaged 5.2 points on 56 percent shooting, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots per game. Almeida reached double figures on five occasions, including a 20-point, seven-rebound effort in his debut against South Dakota. Two of Almeida’s best efforts of 2010-11 came against a pair of top-five teams, as he had 10 points and seven rebounds at No. 3 Kansas and 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting and five rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench in Nebraska’s win over third-ranked Texas. Almeida was a force on the defensive end, ranking sixth in the Big 12 in blocked shots and recording two-or-more 12 times in 30 games.

Gallegos used his redshirt year to get stronger and worked on improving his all-around game and the signs have been evident early in the season. Gallegos is 16th in the Big Ten in scoring at 15.0 ppg while shooting 55

percent from the floor. He racked up a career-high 16 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in a career high 30 minutes against Southern and had 14 points, including a career high four 3-pointers, in the win over Valparaiso. As a sophomore, he played in 25 games, including a start in the season opener, and averaged 2.8 points and 1.0 rebound per game. The Salt Lake City native’s best game of 2010-11 came against Grambling, when he came off the bench for 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting in 22 minutes of action. Gallegos is one of NU’s most experienced players, as he ranks second among Husker returnees in both games played (56) and starts (5).

Talley Takes oFFeNsive role

Senior Dylan Talley will be counted on to be one of Nebraska’s top offensive threats this year, as the 6-foot-5 senior was third on the team in scoring at 8.9 points per game while seeing action in 25 contests in 2011-12. Talley made his second career start in the season opener, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and grabbing seven rebounds. He had only one point against Valparaiso, but led NU in rebounds (six) and assists (four) while holding Ryan Broekhoff to just 2-of-11 shooting.

Talley tied for the Big Ten lead in scoring by a reserve, averaging 8.9 points per game, as he was in double figures 11 times in his first season as a Husker. Talley has been a prolific scorer throughout his collegiate career, earning America East Conference Rookie-of-the-Year honors in 2009-10, averaging 11.8 points per game at Binghamton University. At Blinn (Texas) College, he was sixth nationally in scoring at 23.0 points per game. In 51 career games at the Division I level, Talley has been in double figures 28 times.

Parker makes a PoiNTThe lone freshman in the Husker starting lineup, Benny Parker joined

a short list, becoming only the 10th freshman to start a season opener since 1995. Parker has been steady early on, averaging 7.5 points and 2.0 assists per game. He had seven points, three rebounds and three assists in Thursday’s win over Valparaiso. Parker had eight points and committing only one turnover in 31 minutes of action. Including the exhibition game, Parker has committed just three turnovers in 83 minutes of playing time.

Parker was a four-year starter at Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, leading the school to an 85-15 mark and a pair of state titles during his high school career. As a senior, he averaged 24.8 points, 6.2 assists and 3.9 steals per game, winning the 2012 DiRenna Award, representing the top player in the Kansas City metro area.

Of Nebraska’s three active point guards playing this season, two are Division I newcomers, as junior college transfer Mike Peltz joined the team in October. Sophomore Trevor Menke is the Huskers’ other primary point guard, as junior college transfer Deverell Biggs will redshirt this season.

rivers looks To GeT iNTo oFFeNsive FlowThroughout the summer and the preseason, one Husker returnee who was flying under the radar was

sophomore David Rivers. The 6-foot-7 wing totaled only 20 points and 16 rebounds in 19 contests as a freshman, but has added nearly 20 pounds since last year. Rivers’ improvement has been evident early on, as he has averaged 4.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Rivers had seven points and five rebounds against Valparaiso and established personal bests in minutes (27), rebounds (six) and assists (three) in the opener. That followed on the heels of an exhibition game where he had nine points and five rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. Rivers was also 4-for-4 from the foul line after shooting 40 percent from the line as a freshman.

will eiGhT be eNouGh For The huskers iN 2012-13Nebraska will likely have only eight scholarship players available for Thursday’s game with Valparaiso, as

Shavon Shields continues to be out with an elbow injury and Deverell Biggs will redshirt this season. Of those eight scholarship players, a total which includes former walk-on Trevor Menke, only three saw action in NU’s 2011-12 opener (Dylan Talley, Brandon Ubel and David Rivers).

shields To be sideliNed Nebraska Coach Tim Miles announced on Nov. 5, that Shavon Shields underwent surgery on Nov. 2 to clear

up an infection that developed from a bursa sac rupture. Shields, who was one of the front runners for extensive playing time, has been limited in practice the last two weeks and could return to action by the end of the Joe Cipriano Classic.

On the men’s side, the memorable Devaney Center moments were compiled by Husker Sports Network radio play-by-play announcer Kent Pavelka and long-time Nebraska men’s basketball beat writer Mike Babcock from Hail Varsity magazine. The men’s basketball moments include Jamar Johnson’s historic buzzer-beater in a win over Kansas, along with outstanding individual performances by legends such as Jack Moore, Andre Smith and Eric Piatkowski. The moments also include dramatic Husker wins over such teams as Michigan State, Oklahoma State and Texas. During the season, fans also will be able to join the discussion through social media, offering their most memorable moments at the Devaney Center. The Nebraska Athletic Department has created a special “Devaney Center Final Season” logo that is displayed on giant banners draped outside above the north and south entrances of the Devaney Center.

A proven program builder who has enjoyed success at the Division I, Division II and NAIA levels, Tim Miles was named the 27th basketball coach at the University of Nebraska on March 24, 2012.

Miles spent the past five seasons building the Colorado State program into a contender in the Mountain West Conference. He increased his victory total in each of his five years at CSU, culminating in a 20-12 record and the school’s first NCAA appearance in nine seasons during his final year in Fort Collins. After winning 16 games in his first two years, his teams went 55-41 over the last three years, reaching postseason play in each campaign.

The 2011-12 Rams posted the school’s first 20-win season since the 1997-98 campaign while playing a schedule that was rated as the fourth-toughest in the country. Colorado State set a school record with three wins over ranked teams and placed three players on the All-Mountain West teams, and Miles was named the District VIII Coach of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association for his efforts. The Rams, one of four Mountain West teams to receive bids in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, averaged 70.1 points per game on the season and topped the Mountain West Conference in field-goal percentage (47.1), 3-point percentage (40.0) and free throw percentage (76.8).

Three of his players earned All-Mountain West honors, marking the program’s most honorees in its half century affiliation with the WAC or Mountain West conferences.

In 2010-11, Miles guided the program to a 19-13 record, a fourth-place finish in the Mountain West, and a berth in the NIT, reaching milestones at every step along the way. The 2010-11 campaign marked the Rams’ first winning season in seven years, and the squad became the 10th in program history to record 19 or more victories in a single season.

With 17 years of experience as a head coach at four institutions, he has compiled a career record of 283-220 entering the 2012-13 season that includes three conference championships and six postseason tournament appearances.

Before taking over the Colorado State program, Miles spent six seasons at North Dakota State, guiding the Bison through the transition to the Division I ranks. He won at least 16 games in each of his final five seasons at the school, including the program’s first three years at the Division I level. Miles’ tenure at NDSU was highlighted by a pair of road wins over top-15 squads in his final two seasons.

Miles showed his ability to turn around programs during his tenure at Southwest Minnesota State University. He took a program that had only one winning season in the previous decade and went 78-39 in his four seasons at the school, recorded the first 20-win season in school history, and led Southwest Minnesota State to its first back-to-back winning seasons in more than two decades.

Miles began his head coaching career at Mayville (N.D.) State University, guiding the program to a 35-22 record from 1995 to 1997 and a pair of conference titles. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Northern State for six seasons from 1989-90 through 1994-95 and helped the Wolves to five NAIA playoff appearances and five regional titles. He was the recruiting coordinator for NSU and was responsible for bringing in and coaching five All-Americans at that school.

A native of Doland, S.D., he graduated from the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., in 1989 and earned a master’s degree in health and physical education from Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D., in 1990. He was inducted into the University of Mary Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.

ubel's big Night Carries HuskersThe debut of new Nebraska men’s basketball coach Tim Miles was a successful one, as the

Huskers topped Southern, 66-55, in the season opener on Nov. 11. Brandon Ubel paced the Big Red with his second career double-double, totaling 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and 12 rebounds. The 6-foot-10 senior forward set career bests in both points and caroms, as Nebraska shot 51.9 percent from the floor. Ubel took over in a key second-half run, scoring nine of his points in an 11-3 Husker spurt after Southern pulled to within 31-28 in the opening minute of the half. The senior, who was NU’s only returning starter from last season, scored seven straight points, as his 3-point play gave NU a 38-28 lead.

Ubel was one of three Huskers in double figures in the victory. Junior guard Ray Gallegos, who redshirted in 2011-12, had a career-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting while Dylan Talley added 17 points and seven rebounds for Nebraska, which shot 51.9 percent from the field and held Southern to 39.6 percent shooting.

Huskers Hold off valparaisoNebraska built a 14-point lead and held on down the stretch, picking up a 50-48 win over

Valparaiso in the opening game of the Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic .The Huskers, who improved to 2-0, won the game on the defensive end of the floor, holding

Valparasio to just 34 percent shooting and 2-of-15 from 3-point range. The preseason favorite to win the Horizon League, the Crusaders came into Thursday’s game averaging 77 points per game and shooting 54 percent from long range.

While Valparaiso struggled from long range, junior Ray Gallegos enjoyed a strong night from beyond the arc for Nebraska, hitting a career-high four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Gallegos, who had a career-high 16 in NU’s opener against Southern, was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Senior Brandon Ubel led the Huskers in scoring with 17 points and five rebounds, including a pair of free throws with14 seconds left to provide the Huskers with breathing room.

Nebraska trailed by as many as five points early on before Gallegos and Ubel combined for nine straight points to put the Huskers up 25-19 on a Gallegos 3-pointer. Nebraska, which shot 48 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, eventually built a seven-point lead after a David Rivers’ putback and took a 28-22 lead into the locker room.

Valparaiso came out of the gate quickly in the second half, quickly cutting Nebraska’s advantage to 30-26 before Gallegos keyed a 10-0 spurt a pair of 3-pointers, and Nebraska built a 40-26 lead after Benny Parker’s layup with 14:58 remaining.

The Crusaders kept chipping away at the Huskers’ lead, pulling to within 44-37 after a Kevin Van Wijk layup, but baskets by Rivers and Ubel got the lead back to 11, at 48-37, with 7:21 remaining.

The Huskers would then go cold from the field, not hitting a field goal down the stretch, as Van Wijk, who finished with a game-high 20 points, and Horizon League Player of the Year Ryan Broekhoff brought the visitors back. Two free throws by Broekhoff made it a 48-46 game before Ubel was fouled. The senior calmly sank both shots and to give NU a four-point lead. Van Wijk’s two free throws with three seconds left made it a two-point game, but NU found Andre Almeida on the inbounds, and he was fouled with 1.5 seconds left. Almeida missed the free throw and Valparaiso’s desperation attempt fell short to give Nebraska the win.
