DESCRIPTION
Over 11.5 million additional people of color between 2000 and a 12 percent increase. Latinos, Asian Pacific Islanders (API), and Multiracial individuals are the fastest growing populations. The number of Latinos grew by seven million, to 42.7 million; the number of API grew by nearly two million to 12.8 million; and the number of individuals who identify as Multiracial by over 540,000 to nearly four million. The number of Blacks has increased by nearly 2 million--a 5.6 percent increase. The number of American Indians grew by 129,000--a 6.1 percent increase. • Five Fastest Growing States for POC between 2000 & 2005: Nevada (27.8%), New Hampshire (24.9%), Arizona (20.7%), UT (19.6%), and Idaho (18.6%). 23 states have a million or more people of color.
• Five Slowest Growing States for POC: Louisiana (4.0%), Hawaii (4.4%), Mississippi (5.1%), New York (5.4%), and Alabama (5.6%. The District of Columbia was the only place to experience a decline (-8.1%).
• 35 States Grew by More than 10% between 2000 and 2005. The number of Blacks has increased by nearly 2 million--a 5.6 percent increase. Latinos grew by more than 25% in Thirteen States. APIs grew by more than 20% in Fourteen States.
• Midsized States Averaged Fastest Growth in POC: Under one million increase=11.4%, 1-5 million=12.9%, 5-10 million=12.9%, over 10 million=10.3%.
