PRESIDENT’S LETTER
I can't believe that July is already here! The District 3 Regional tournament in Fairfield is coming up July 10-
16 and before you know it, it will be time for our own sectional in Allendale on September 15-17. We are
planning a great tournament so be sure to mark your calendars.
I want to thank everyone who participated in the April sectional, the Johnke Team event and the Unit's Pro-
Am event in June. Congratulations to all of the winners.
For right now, we have a couple of holidays and a whole lot of Summer to enjoy and I'm sure that we will find
some time for some bridge, too.
See you soon,
John Hogan

This ‘n That From Your District Director
The ACBL Board has selected a new
CEO, Bahar Gidwani of New York City.
He comes to us after more than 30 years
of business experience as founder and
manager of technology-based companies,
and already has presented to the Board a
number of ideas for potential focus on
development and growth in the future.
In addition to a two hour presentation
and extensive discussion with the Board
prior to his selection, he is meeting by
phone with each Board member to seek
guidance and ideas. He has an educa-
tional background in astronomy and
physics as an undergraduate and went on
to become a Baker Scholar at Harvard
Business School. He will be relocating
to the Horn Lake area with his wife, who
is a doctor involved in cancer research.
Bahar has started work already, although
his appointment becomes official on July
1. He will be on hand in Toronto, to-
gether with Robert Hartman, who will
serve as a consultant through the end of
the tournament.
Before finishing his tenure, Robert
was able to complete the staffing of sen-
ior positions, including a new marketing
director and a director of field opera-
tions, which gives Bahar a full and hope-
fully competent team to move the ACBL
forward.
In local news, our final Norma Shel-
ley Saratoga tournament was completed
disappointingly with a drop in attendance
and a resulting financial loss. We ex-
perimented with online daily bulletins
which, after a spotty start, were working
well by the latter part of the tournament.
We are looking forward to the same tour-
nament in Albany next year at the Al-
bany Hilton, a pleasant, easily accessed
and recently renovated site located in
downtown Albany convenient to many
restaurants with free parking for bridge
players, with or without rooms. The lo-
cation is more convenient to most of our
members and your support will be neces-
sary if we are to continue to provide a
regional in the northern part of our dis-
trict. Our Danbury tournament remains
in question after 2018 and your District
Board is discussing it with district 25, in
addition to investigating alternatives.
Fortunately, our Fairfield tournament
promises to be its usual success and we
hope to see you all in there beginning
July 10. Please also plan ahead for the
Joan Gerard Tarrytown regional this
coming January, as here also we will
need higher attendance in order to con-
tinue at that impressive venue, which
was universally acclaimed by those who
attended this year.
The ACBL Board continues to focus
on tournament attendance, membership
growth and club services, and Bahar is
focusing particularly on technology im-
provements and ACBL score, areas in
which he has a great deal of expertise.
The Toronto board meetings promise to
be active and important to our future.
Stay tuned.
