WELCOME!Sitting writing this, I can hardly believe it has been four years since we here at New Diorama Theatre opened our doors to the public.

Over the last four years we’ve welcomed close to 70,000 audience members through our doors (and that’s not including the thousands of people who use our very popular café!). We’ve had productions that started here at NDT transfer all over the country and, four times, internationally.

Alongside our two Peter Brook Awards and our Offie for being Central London’s most welcoming theatre, this year we were proud to be shortlisted for The Stage’s Fringe Theatre of the Year, two Arts and Business Awards for our partnership with British Land, who support our award-winning community programme, and to win the OffWestEnd Award for Best Artistic Director and the 2013/14 Les Enfants Terribles Prize for our show Kubrick3.

The launch of a new season is always a good time to say thank you and we wouldn’t have been able to achieve anything without the audiences who support us, the artistic trusts and foundations who continue to back us and the theatre companies from across the UK who perform here.

This season is our best yet – we’ve got many returning favourites alongside some bold new companies that we can’t wait to introduce you to.

Looking forward to welcoming you very soon,

Yours,

Team NDT

NEW DIORAMA & REGENT’S PLACE SUMMER CINEMAE.T

This summer, we are teaming up with British Land and Regent’s Place to present the first ever New Diorama & Regent’s Place Summer Cinema.

As part of the celebrations of 30 Years Of Regent’s Place, we’ll be showing four brilliant family films throughout August for all of our local residents to enjoy on the big screen at Regent’s Place Plaza (just down the road from New Diorama Theatre - see map at back of brochure for details).

And the best thing about all of this?

Firstly, it’s totally free of charge for everyone to attend and watch the films - just turn up on the day and enjoy with no need to book.

And, secondly, the films start at a perfect time for family audiences!

So why not come down, grab a colourful deck chair, maybe bring a picnic and enjoy a movie night with us? We really hope to see you at one of the four screenings!

Yours,

Team NDT

The first film we’ll be showing is classic 1984 family film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, which also celebrates its 30 year anniversary this year.

A group of aliens visit earth but one of them is lost and left behind.

The alien is found by a 10 year old boy, Elliott. The two begin to communicate, and start a friendship in which E.T learns about life on earth and Elliott learns about some new values for the true meaning of friendship. E.T. wants to go home, but if Elliott helps him, he’ll lose a friend...

Showing Saturday 2 August @ 15:00. Running Time 121 minutes. Rated U.

THIS AUGUST WHY NOT COME DOWN TO REGENT’S PLACE AND JOIN US?

Showing Saturday 9 August @ 17:00. Running Time 98 minutes. Rated PG.

One of the most moving films of the last ten years, Pixar’s animated Oscar-winning film UP is a masterpiece that people of all ages can enjoy.

The retired Carl Fredricksen is ready for his last chance at high-flying excitement. Tying thousands of balloons to his house, Carl sets off to a lost world. Unbeknownst to Carl, Russell, an overeager 8-year old is hiding on Carl’s front porch!

Stuck together in the wilds of the jungle, this unlikely duo reach new heights and realise that life’s biggest adventures aren’t the ones you set out for.

To finish our first season we’re showing Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2009, for older family audience.

PHILIPP LÖHLE’S

DAS DINGUK PREMIERE

A globetrotting comedy of globalised connections. When the African Siwa is talked into using sustainable methods of cotton cultivation by a Swiss aid worker, it helps two young Chinese businesspeople to make a success of their first start-up. But when their trade in soya beans begins to falter, this has an impact on Romanian pig-breeders, which in turn has direct consequences for the marriage of Europeans Katrin and Thomas. Meanwhile, ‘the thing’, a cotton ball, journeys over oceans and through cities amazed by the wheelings and dealings of humanity. In a world where everything is connected with everything else, characters are driven by their yearning for the inexplicable, the magic moment, the great love, in this Philipp Löhle’s moving and humorous observation on our globalised world.

This production is supported by the New Diorama Emerging Companies Fund.

ALLTHEPIGS’

THE PIANO MANINSPIRED BY THE INCREDIBLE TRUE STORY

In 2005, a suited man washed up on the Kent coast with no recollection of where he came from, how he got there or who he was.

He could not speak. No one could recognise him. But he could play Tchaikovsky...

Inspired by real-life events, AllthePigs discover the story behind ‘The Piano Man’ Andreas Grassl. Silent for four months, the world speculated over his identity - from the doctors who helped him heal, to the press who vilified him as a fraud and to the countless people worldwide who claimed to know him.

When his silence ended, that’s when his troubles really started.

This production is supported by the New Diorama Emerging Companies Fund.

ENGINEER THEATRE COLLECTIVE’S

RUNWe want more. We do. And why shouldn’t we have it? We’ve worked hard, educated, cultured and motivated ourselves. We’re hungry.

Our greatest leaps of understanding have always been born from the desire for more. In 2013, Engineer Theatre Collective began a dialogue with the latest generation of aspiring financiers. Whilst they hold little power today, these young professionals will be running our banks, trading our stocks and managing our pensions tomorrow.

Engaging with these bright new minds and some of our greatest classical and contemporary thinkers, RUN is an honest and visceral exploration of what drives our natural desire for more.

(I FEEL FINE)Boy meets girl. Girl meets boy. Boy and girl have a wonderful night together. And in the morning it’s the start of the beginning of the end of the world...

(I feel fine) is a love story, set in the shadow of environmental collapse. The daisies have begun to wilt, the ice caps are all but gone and people have started to bulk-buy tinned food. But Tim really likes Daisy and she didn’t explicitly say no to a second date.

So what happens to romance when there’s no need to plan a future? Do you stock up on tinned beans and head for the wilderness? Do you go it alone?

Fat Git Theatre bring you (i feel fine); a comic, romantic, apocalyptic play about the environment, our world and what happens when we reach the beginning of the end.

IDLE MOTION’S

BORGES AND ICURRENTLY ON NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL TOUR

Edinburgh Fringe sell-out and NDT Associate Ensemble Idle Motion return with their stunning Total Theatre Award nominated show Borges and I, exploring the life of visionary writer Jorge Borges and his remarkable work. Integrating creative stagecraft, innovative video projection and beautiful physicality, hundreds of books transform into a plethora of images, from a flock of birds to a city skyline, from an airplane to a universe of libraries.

Moving seamlessly between the worlds of Borges’ work and his readership, a vivid portrait is revealed of a man on the brink of blindness. Intertwined with this narrative is the tender story of a couple meeting at a haphazard book group, brought together through their shared love of literature.

Idle Motion are a New Diorama Associate Ensemble and are Associate Artists at The Lowry. This production is supported by the New Diorama Emerging Companies Fund and supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

BLIND SUMMIT’S

CITIZEN PUPPETPART OF A DOUBLE-BILL WITH SAPPHIRE’S PUSH

Puppet pioneers Blind Summit Theatre collaborate with final year students from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama to present a verbatim puppet theatre experiment that delves into the lives of people on the political “fringe”, in the build up to the general election. Using verbatim dialogue that expresses views that might otherwise be censored, the puppets reveal unspeakable truths (and lies). Immigration, housing, immigration, tax fraud, immigration... The puppets don’t have opinions, they just repeat what they hear. The first chance to see a new emerging work by Blind Summit - the creators of hit show ‘The Table’ and the puppetry for the London Olympic Opening Ceremony 2012. It’s political. It’s verbatim. It’s got puppets.

IDLE MOTION’S

SHOOTING WITH LIGHT WORLD PREMIERE

In 1934 a young German refugee flees to Paris, discovers the genius of photography and reinvents herself as Gerda Taro, becoming one of the pioneering women to photograph the front line. In this startling and visually rich production Idle Motion expose one of the most remarkable untold stories of our age.

Today we live in a world where our lives can feel like they are defined by our collective Kodak moments. With the compulsion to capture it all we are flooded by a myriad of images. And yet within the 2.5 billion photographs taken every day, there will only be a precious few that we will continue to hold on to.

Described by The Guardian as ‘a brilliant emerging company’, Idle Motion use innovative staging, physicality and multimedia to interweave the dramatic stories of photographs undeveloped, scattered and unearthed. This is a story about capturing moments, freezing shadows and the photographs that outlive our memories.

Idle Motion are a New Diorama Associate Ensemble and are Associate Artists at The Lowry. This production is supported by the New Diorama Emerging Companies Fund, The Lowry, Greenwich Theatre and supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

BOX OF TRICKS’

PLASTIC FIGURINES WRITTEN BY ELLA CARMEN GREENHILL

“Mum told me that there was something in his brain that was different, she said that he liked to put his toys in lines.”

Rose loves her brother Mikey. Mikey loves Rose, Bruce Willis films and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but he hates change. When their mum is diagnosed with leukaemia, their world is plunged into chaos.

Inspired by events in the playwright’s own life, Plastic Figurines is a funny and moving new play that explores the relationship between siblings with very different views of the world.

Recently nominated for a Manchester Theatre Award, Box of Tricks is a theatre company committed to the next generation of new writing. Playwright Ella Carmen Greenhill is a former writer-on-attachment at Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse and Paines Plough.

This production is supported by the New Diorama Emerging Companies Fund.

The country is in state of siege. The capital is on fire. Riot-police, specialist units and snipers are fighting the mob violently. Protesters are arming themselves with homemade weapons, torching police buses, throwing petrol bombs and besieging government buildings…

Critically acclaimed BeFrank Theatre Company returns to New Diorama with a new thought-provoking and epic play about how a society struck back against a repressive government and succeeded, despite bloodshed and extreme anti-riot tactics, in overthrowing a President and changing the course of history.

From personally recorded real-life stories, extensive research and a journey to the heart of Ukraine, this story is based upon the revolution in Kiev in January-February 2014.

This production is supported by the New Diorama Emerging Companies Fund and is presented ahead of performances in Sweden, Denmark and Ukraine.
