NDSU Student Food Security Survey: Spring, 2016 Jeremy Penn, Director, Student Affairs Assessment Daisy Boatey, Graduate Research Assistant Greg Lardy, Professor, Animal Science Executive Summary Introduction The NDSU Student Food Security Survey is one component of NDSU’s commitment to the Presidents United to Solve Hunger Campaign (http://www.pushtosign.org). The purpose of the survey was to better understand NDSU students’ food security and hunger and to identify possible strategies for improving students’ access to the kinds of foods they want to eat. Data Collection and Response Rate The survey was administered in classes during the spring, 2016 semester. This data collection method was selected because the survey administrators desired an accurate representation of food security and needs. A total of 1,203 students completed one or more items on the survey. We estimate the response rate for this voluntary, in-class survey to be over 80%. Key Findings Most NDSU students had enough of the kinds of food they want to eat (57%). A substantial number of NDSU students had enough to eat but not always the kinds of food they wanted (38%) and some NDSU students sometimes (5%) or often (<1%) did not have enough to eat. Students who sometimes or often did not have enough to eat indicated the largest challenges were not enough time to cook (66%), not enough money for food (53%), kinds of food I want are not available (39%), good quality of food not available (36%), and too hard to get to the store (31%). 26% of respondents said they sometimes or often worried about whether my food would run out before I got money to buy more. 35% of respondents said they couldn’t afford to eat balanced meals. 8% of respondents who had a child or children living with them said the child / children often or sometimes were not eating enough because I just couldn’t afford enough food. 11% of respondents were hungry during the last 12 months but didn’t eat because they couldn’t afford enough food. Over half of the students who didn’t always have the kinds of food they wanted or who sometimes or often didn’t have enough to eat said it negatively impacted their academic success. Few students made use of community food resources, such as Great Plains Food Bank (2%), Dorothy Day House (1%), WIC program (1%), Food stamps (2%), food from private organizations (3%), or emergency food pantry (1%). However, 5% said they had received food from friends or relatives.

Executive Summary Introduction The NDSU Student Food Security Survey is one component of NDSU’s commitment to the Presidents United to Solve Hunger Campaign (http://www.pushtosign.org). The purpose of the survey was to better understand NDSU students’ food security and hunger and to identify possible strategies for improving students’ access to the kinds of foods they want to eat. Data Collection and Response Rate The survey was administered in classes during the spring, 2016 semester. This data collection method was selected because the survey administrators desired an accurate representation of food security and needs.

A total of 1,203 students completed one or more items on the survey. We estimate the response rate for this voluntary, in-class survey to be over 80%. Key Findings Most NDSU students had enough of the kinds of food they want to eat (57%). A substantial number of NDSU students had enough to eat but not always the kinds

of food they wanted (38%) and some NDSU students sometimes (5%) or often (<1%) did not have enough to eat.

Students who sometimes or often did not have enough to eat indicated the largest challenges were not enough time to cook (66%), not enough money for food (53%), kinds of food I want are not available (39%), good quality of food not available (36%), and too hard to get to the store (31%).

26% of respondents said they sometimes or often worried about whether my food would run out before I got money to buy more.

35% of respondents said they couldn’t afford to eat balanced meals. 8% of respondents who had a child or children living with them said the child /

children often or sometimes were not eating enough because I just couldn’t afford enough food.

11% of respondents were hungry during the last 12 months but didn’t eat because they couldn’t afford enough food.

Over half of the students who didn’t always have the kinds of food they wanted or who sometimes or often didn’t have enough to eat said it negatively impacted their academic success.

Few students made use of community food resources, such as Great Plains Food Bank (2%), Dorothy Day House (1%), WIC program (1%), Food stamps (2%), food from private organizations (3%), or emergency food pantry (1%). However, 5% said they had received food from friends or relatives.

Only 70% of respondents use a car as their primary mode of transportation. 67% of respondents had an average monthly income of $1,000 or less. 51% of respondents said low cost dining plans at the NDSU dining centers would be

very helpful for their personal food situation. 29% of respondents said having grocery items for purchase on campus would be

very helpful for their personal food situation. 20% of respondents said free or inexpensive transportation to a specialty food store

would be very helpful for their personal food situation. Next Steps The results from this survey should be shared broadly and discussed to consider how NDSU can better support students’ food needs. In particular, NDSU could consider making grocery items available on campus, exploring low-cost dining options, transportation to specialty food stores, and increasing students’ awareness of community food resources.

I do think having to work crazy hours to pay for schol, meanwhile being expected to perform well can get in the way of the students health.

The suggestion for a place on campus (or even closer to campus) that isn't the Loaf and Jug gas station would be a HUGE improvement for students. I remember living on campus as a freshman and wishing that I had healthier options on weekends, when the dinig center closest to me was closed. I also was without a car at that point and didn't have the option of going to grocery stores to buy my own food and cook it in the residence hall's kitchens. Now, as an upperclassman, I still wish there were better optios for purchasing healthy food or grocery supplies. I realize that I am lucky in the fact that I am able to pay for my own food, but I do want to note that some of my income comes from reimbursement funds from taking out student loans. Scholarships cover mst of my tuition, but it is a common practice among college students to take out loans in order to supplement your income from part-time jobs in order to afford rent and food. I hope I will find a full-time position after graduation that will allow me to ay back these loans quickly. I want it to be known that affording tuition isn't the only worry on students' minds--sometimes it's all of the expenses that come regularly after paying for tuition and books. Offering support in how to purchase healthy groceies on a budget, as well as cooking classes, would be so cool! It would be a fun thing to do with friends and encourage each other to make food together rather than purchasing cheap fast food/gas station food as a solution.

There is a lot of pig based food in NDSU. For me and others who have a religious diet, I sometime skip meals because of it.

they do a pretty good job, dining center unlimited meal plans are WAY too expensive to be required for freshman. It's impossible to get your moneys worth unless you get a Block plan and use them all.

When I do commute to campus, it is generally on the weekend, and many of the food options are not open on the weekend. That would be the only suggestion I would make, is to have some options open on the weekends for those who are on campus and don't livein town.

While i am fortunate to have enough to eat, always. I have worked with students every year who do not have enough to eat, have a place to live and have no idea where to go for help.

With job, I am unable to eat @ campus. Classes are also extremely close together. Get yelled @ if I ask to put in lunchbox so I can eat @ work and so have $ to buy some.

Yes to low cost dining plan at the NDSU dining centers. Also raise stuff in your free house with the sustainability club and sell it to students. Access and Motivation to buy and cook healthy, balanced meal is key. Absolutely Key. It takes discipline to o it though.
