Program Deliverables / Requirements
Establish an Advisory Board to select and prioritize historic newspaper titles to digitize (date range 1836-1922). Follow NDNP selection guidelines
Deliver selected title list to LC, which includes info on the titles, geographic and chronological coverage, and microfilm quality
Perform technical analysis on microfilm
Program Deliverables / Requirements
100,000 pages of digitized historic newspapers (images, metadata, OCR files, PDFs; all adhering to NDNP tech specs)
Essays for each newspaper title digitized. Max 500 words each, focusing on scope, content, and significance of each title.
A spreadsheet listing free-access, online newspapers in state or territory

Track where things are (physical) as well as status of items (i.e. microfilm duplication status, digitization status, validation status, etc.). This involves careful coordination between NSLA and UNLV, and UNLV and the external digitization vendor, and ultimately UNLV and LC

and validation March 31: First sample batch of data (images /
metadata) due to LC April 2015 + :
April 30: Selected title information, microfilm eval info due to LC
Oct 1, 2015: 25% of content (25,000 pages) due to LC. Includes newspaper essays for those titles.

National Digital Newspaper Program
Overview A partnership between the Library of
Congress, the National Endowment For the Humanities, and, to date, 38 states.
Nevada and South Dakota are the 37th and 38th states to join the program

NDNP Overview
Goal: “a long-term effort to provide permanent access to a national digital resource of newspaper bibliographic information and historic newspapers, selected and digitized by NEH-funded institutions (awardees) from all U.S. states and territories”
NDNP Overview
Program began in 2004, and just entered it’s tenth year.
Historic newspapers are defined as 1836-1922
Digitized newspapers and associated essays are publicly accessible at the Chronicling America website:

Program Deliverables: The 10,000 Foot View
“Cultural heritage institutions join the NDNP for the purpose of selecting, digitizing, and delivering to the LC approximately 100,000 newspaper pages per award”
Award cycles last two years, and states can apply for subsequent awards to continue their projects

The Advisory Board
The Advisory Board is extremely important, and a mandated requirement of this program.
Collectively, the Board is comprised of a diverse array of experts: historians, archivists, educators, and librarians that are familiar with Nevada’s history.
The Advisory Board
Will carefully consider the selection guidelines as provided in the NEH Guidelines
Will collectively select and prioritize newspapers for digitization and inclusion
May contribute toward required newspaper essays (500 word essays for each newspaper title digitized)
