SEBERNHUNTSMAN, 2LTChapter Chairman

During the April meeting of the E- Board,

it was my distinct honor to present a

commemorative U. S. Flag to the chapter

which flew “in the face of the enemy”

during my deployment to the M iddle East

(see photo, column 2). The flag was flown

on 25 August, 2017, while in support of

Operation Freedom’s Sentinel at Firing

Base “Mad Dog”, Nangarhar Province,

Afghanistan. While deployed, I never

forgot my fellow troopers and associates,

and had always hoped to honor this great

organization. Please cherish for this flag...

ALWAYS!

I would like to extend the appreciation of

our membership, to Darrell Mond and the

El Paso Veterans and Riders Association

(EPVRA), for the Texas State Flags

presented to LTC (Ret.) Robert E. Chisolm;

the chapter Color Guard; and our

organization. Special recognition, from

fellow veterans, is always a great honor.

KUDOS EPVRA! (photos - pg. 3, col. 2)

We recently received generous, financial

donations from Col. (Ret.) George Cudahy;

William “Billy” Padovano and Family; and

from Chris J. Harris. These contributions

will help support our unit and provide

additional finances for our “Padovano

Fam ily Scholarship Fund”. “Thank You

All, for these generous contributions!”

We now prepare for the Fort Bliss, Armed

Forces Day Parade; M emorial Day at

Concordia Cemetery, and our annual

CAMP CONCORDIA... A HISTORY

The United States Arm y’s first post in what

is now El Paso, was established in 1849 as a

place called Sm ith’s Ranch. Located in the

current downtown area, the post was

abandoned in 1851 when the troops moved

to New Mexico’s Fort Fillmore. A second El

Paso post was erected at Magoffinsvile in

1853. During the Civil W ar, both Union and

Confederate soldiers occupied the post. In

early 1868, flooding from the Rio Grande

caused major damage to the post which was

then relocated three miles east to a new site

on “El Rancho de la Concordia”, owned by

early El Paso settlers, Hugh and Juana

S t e p h e n s o n , a n d r e n a m e d C a m p

Concordia. In 1869, the post was christened

with a new nam e - Fort Bliss. It remained

there for nin e yea rs b efo re b ein g

dismantled in January 1877. The actual site

of this original Fort Bliss is located at 4001

Durazno Street, just below the Highway 54

and I-10 Interchange.
