Welcome back everyone! I hope your summer
was warm and full of relaxation!
As your NCU President for this 2013-2014 year, I
wanted to ensure that this year will be both memo-rable and enjoyable for you. It is my hope that you
will be as excited about this years upcoming
events as I am! Weve been working hard to come
up with an action-packed agenda of events that
really resonate with Nutrition students from all
years of study. Whether this is your first degree,
or your fourth, I truly believe there is an event for
everyone this year.
At the end of the winter 2013 semester, NCU and
The School of Nutrition sent out a survey to all
Nutrition students to find out what events you
guys are interested in. WellYou asked, and we
listened! We have everything from mock inter-
views to help you prepare for internship applica-
tions to macaroon tutorials! We are also collabo-
rating with The School of Nutrition for our first
ever nutrition case competition. This exciting
event will have a panel of esteemed judges and a
CASH PRIZE for the winner!
Nervous about textbook costs this year? Dont
worry the NCU has you covered! We will be
having our Annual Used Book Sale starting Sep-
tember 3rd, so come by the NCU office and drop
off your old textbooks!
Looking forward to another great year!

We all know the deal. One too many memes and somehow youre already a week behind in read-
ings. Okay, we exaggerate. But with so many things going on in rst year new experiences, new
faces, new courses, new responsibilies its easy to feel overwhelmed even before classes start!
Dont stress here are some useful ps to help you survive your rst year at Ryerson.
Tip #1: Dark circles wont score you an A on your midtermor that date on Friday.
Staying on top of readings, course work, and assignments is one of those tried-and-true ways to
help you do well in your classes. Cramming not only lessens your chances of doing well, but it
makes you lose precious sleep, and trust me youre denitely going to need that regularly. Think
about it logically does cramming 12 weeks worth of material into a single night sound like a
recipe for success? Do yourself a favour: take care of yourself, and take care of your course work.
Tip #2: It sounds so high-schoolbut your planner is your best friend.
Seriously! Use a planner or calendar to keep track of important dates, deadlines, and appoint-
ments. Were all human, and more than likely, you will forget when your next chem lab is, or
where your next class is located. Stay organized with a planner or calendar. Bonus? You can pick
one up during Orientaon Week in the Ryerson Student Centre, located at 55 Gould Street.
Tip #3: They look all big and scary at the front of the classbut your professors wont eat you.
If you need help understanding a topic or feel generally clueless in class, ask a queson! If youre
wondering, theres a really good chance others are wondering too. Be bold! You could also book
an appointment to see them during oce hours (which are dierent for each professor), or just
drop in. Its totally acceptable with a lot of professors. The more you get to know them, the more
youll realize that yeah, they want to get to know you, and no, they arent out to get you.
Tip # 4: Dont sacrice that third Ssocial life.
The School of Nutrion, and Ryerson University in general, is full of opportunies to get involved
theres student clubs, organizaons, athlec teams, social events put on by your Nutrion
Course Union, karaoke at Ram on the Ryethe list goes on FOREVER. And with these oppor-
tunies comes the chance to meet some great people and make some lasng memories. So
put yourself out there!
Tip #5: Know your priories.
This will be dierent for everyone. No one has the same set of responsibilies. Get the most
out of your rst year by knowing what maers to you, and how much aenon you shouldpay to each responsibility you have.
Always remember the big picture...!
Youre starng a new phase in your life! University will be fun, scary, surprising, stressful, and
everything in-between. The important thing is to keep an open mind, stay posive, keep on
top of your priories, and take me to do the things that keep you happy. Thats really all there is
to it!

Tasty & Affordable Food Around Campus
V O L U M E 5 , I S S U E 1
Having the privilege of being located in the heart of downtown To-
ronto may serve as a challenge for some when looking for places to
eat! After all, we have the best around us! However, as students,
we want food that tastes good at an affordable price. Our team has put together some
places that may help you the next time youre searching for a place to eat!
1. Brown Bag Sandwiches : 377 Church St Toronto
If you enjoy premium sandwiches but do not enjoy paying for
the expensive prices (most under $7.50), then Brown Bag sandwiches
would be perfect for you! They have tons of options from pulled pork
sandwiches with a side of coleslaw to tomato and baby spinach
sandwiches. A side of sweet potato French fries with chipotle
mayo will complete your meal. Food is great, close to school and
the staff is so friendly.
2. Salad King 340 Yonge St.
Come in a student, feast like a king! At Sal-
ad King the vibe is very laid back and
friendly. Service is quick, and its conven-
ient location right next to campus makes it a
perfect little place to swing by for a bite to
eat between classes. The food is tasty and
portions are large, but best of all most dishes are
under $10 making it a great choice for a hungry
student!
3.
Want to make the best of being a
Ryerson student? Check out the AMC
food court, where almost every restau-
rant has a student discount for those
with Ryerson I.D! Try out some
CaribbeanQueen or satisfy your taste
buds with some Thai delight! You're
friends will be in awe when you showthem, since a lot of students are una-
ware of these amazing deals. We even
get a discount at Spring Sushi!
4. Ali Baba: 2202 Dundas St W
When I'm looking for quick grab and go lunch I'll pit stop
in at Ali Baba's on the corner of Dundas & Ronces. On
Tuesdays they have a two for one falafel sandwich for
$3.99 which is a total bargain. This place is awe-some. Their food is very fresh and delicious. for
$5.99 you can order a falafel or shwarma dinner
plate that includes your choice of lentil rice, salad,
hummus, pita, pickled turnip, etc. It is a huge
amount of food for the price. If you love middle
eastern food, this the place to go!
5. Lou Dawgs : 76 Gerrard St E
If you want great service, great food and great
value, head to Lou Dawgs.
Had been to the King street location before and
loved it. When they opened next to Ryerson's
campus, I knew I had a new lunch haunt.Their
prices are moderate and affordable !
