Biology: NCEA Level 3 Code: BL301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits in Biology, including BIOL. 2.3. COURSE DESCRIPTION The course includes how plants and animals respond to their environment, the role of DNA in the relation to phenotype, processes and patterns of evolution and trends in the biological and cultural evolution of humans. Internal assessments involve understanding the role of DNA, researching biotechnological techniques and how these are used in fields such as forensic science or stem cell research. The course requires the students to learn by reading, research and lectures.

Chemistry: NCEA Level 3 Code: CH301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 15 credits in chemistry and numeracy requirements for UE COURSE DESCRIPTION Studying chemistry will enable the students to: carry out more complex investigations and make sense of their results; understand and predict the way a range of chemicals react; describe how people interact with chemicals and chemical processes; appreciate the place of materials in society. The students will develop their skill in interpreting equations, graphs and experimental results. In addition, observational and analytical skills are developed, allowing students in the course to increase their understanding of common and important chemical processes.

Classical Studies: NCEA Level 3 Code: CS301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 12 credits L2 EN and good overall performance in NCEA Level 2. COURSE DESCRIPTION From a range of resources specific analytical skills will be developed. Key reference texts must be read and understood. OHP’s, maps and reproductions are widely used. The course includes a study of two Aristophanes’ comedies, WASPS and Frogs; a study of sixteen Greek Vases, their decoration techniques and construction; a study of the life of Alexander the Great; a research topic on Alexander the Great and an external examination essay on Alexander the Great.

Computing: NCEA Level 3 Code: CM302 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits. Students need a good mathematics background. COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will develop advanced computer skills in at least one subject area of computing. Students choose their own course to cover information systems/programming, business applications, web design/desktop publishing/multimedia and technical/people aspects of the computer industry. Two compulsory topics are ethics and computer programming.

Drama: NCEA Level 3 Code: DM301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION The skills and techniques of acting developed in Level 2 Drama will be extended in Level 3. There is a great opportunity for the creative performer in terms of devising and improvising with a solid research base. The onus can be on the individual in Level 3 Drama; there are still the group performances, but within that situation the individual student is now more responsible for the underlying processes and techniques. A full scale production is the highlight of the year. Students will need to make themselves available for after school rehearsals to gain the credits for this Achievement Standard. A minimum of two theatre visits is compulsory in this course.

Economics: NCEA Level 3 Code: EC301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits If studied previously then 14 credits including at least 8 credits from the external achievement standards. (2.1, 2.2, 2.3) COURSE DESCRIPTION This course looks at both economic theory and applied economics. It is divided into three sections; resource allocation via the market system

(microeconomics) resource allocation via the public sector aggregate economic activity and policy (macro

economics). Students who complete the course will be well prepared for stage one economics at tertiary level. Students will learn by developing a number of skills including economic analysis, and statistical, investigative and policy decision making. Studies include the criticism and appreciation of prose, poetry and drama including a Shakespearean play. Students will learn by reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, presenting seminars and discussion.

COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to enable students to gain the 8 credits required for UE literacy. The focus will be on the structure of writing and the development of reading skills. Students will respond to a wide range of written and visual materials. The aim is to improve students’ knowledge of grammatical structures and syntax to improve their ability to comprehend text. Vocabulary development is also a key element of this course.

Food & Nutrition: NCEA Level 3 Code: FN302 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is for anyone with an interest in food, nutrition and health. It provides a useful background for many careers in healthcare, education, the food industry, hospitality/catering businesses and food technology. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of food safety through participating in a variety of practical activities; learn how to prepare nutritious meals for themselves and others; develop their food creativity and meal presentation skills; investigate the nutritional needs of people with food allergies and other nutrition concerns; take part in catering for a special occasion restaurant; investigate and carry out an action plan to address a nutrition concern; manage practical projects and take responsibility for their own work and resources. All units of work include opportunities to further develop practical food management skills.

French: NCEA Level 3 Code: FR301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 French 14 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION Students develop understanding of and ability to communicate in complex French. Topics of study include regions of France, history, film, novel, environment, social cohesion, and the media. Students aim to prepare themselves to understand and communicate in France where they will have the opportunity to travel in 2011. Gateway Programme Code: GW302 ENTRY Year 13 students submit an application followed by a selection interview. COURSE DESCRIPTION Gateway is a programme that is designed for senior students who want to develop a broader range of skills, gain industry skills and explore a career option while completing a senior school qualification. Each student pursues an individual learning programme in their chosen area of interest. Students may pursue a variety of career interests: Animal Care Electrical Automotive Engineering Hairdressing Building Marketing Design Marketing Early Childhood Retail The course combines industry ITO unit standards with work placement. It is a valuable course for students who want to find out about a particular career option.

Geography: NCEA Level 3 Code: GE301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits. 4 of which must come from 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3.. COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will learn about the Natural Processes (Volcanism), the Cultural Processes (Migration - New Zealand and Germany) and Planning and Decision Making. Students undertake skills work such as research, mapping, drawing cross-sections and statistical analysis. They also take part in a four-day fieldtrip to Tongariro National Park in Term 1.

Develop an argument or point of view, with reasons. Recount a series of events to inform, persuade, or entertain. Communicate the same information in different ways in different contexts. Respond to selected and adapted texts (e.g. from literature, film, newspapers, magazines, television, radio) from German-speaking cultures. Possible topics include: a region of Germany, environmental issues, social cohesion, our changing world, getting a job and New Zealand.

Graphics: NCEA Level 3 Code: GR301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is for students who have an interest in design using drawing and modelling media to find innovative solutions to architecture, environmental, technological, engineering, media and technical illustration opportunities. Students will learn to use international design and drawing standards applying presentation and the use of graphic media to units of work. Units of work are presented in the form of a portfolio, researching information related to a given needs or opportunities and presenting a solution in the form of drawings, models and products.

ASSESSMENT Level 3 Achievement Standards 15 credits internally assessed 9 credits externally assessed COURSE COSTS Graphics stationery will need to be purchased by the student, or existing stationery the student has, can be used. A list will be given out on or before the course starts. Approximate cost $30.

History: NCEA Level 3 Code: HI301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits. 12 credits in EN201 COURSE DESCRIPTION The course examines the period of English History from 1558 – 1667. It includes (a) the Economy and Society and the nature of these from 1560’s to the 1660’s. (b) The nature of Elizabethan and early Stuart government between 1588 – 1640. (c) The causes of the English Civil War, Republic and Restoration between 1640-1667. From a range of resources (reference textbooks, maps, cartoons, videos, OHP’s) a wide range of skills will be developed. When possible, primary sources will be used to teach information gathering, analysis skills, information processing and historical propositions.

Topics include land and people, travel and tourism, Japan at work, communication and the media. Essay writing, comprehension and conversation are an essential part of the course.

Mathematics Calculus: NCEA Level 3 Code: MC301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Students will have completed MA201 and demonstrated a sound understanding of the material taught in that course. They will have to gained at least 14 credits, including achievement in standards 2.1 (90284), 2.2 (90285) and 2.3 (90286), and one of 2.9 (90292) or US5251, preferably at Merit level or higher. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course places its emphasis on calculus and its applications. Students will study both differential calculus and integral calculus. Also included in the programme of learning are topics on modelling with and solving trigonometric equations, solving equations and complex numbers.

ASSESSMENT Level 3 Achievement Standards 4 credits internally assessed 17 credits externally assessed COURSE COSTS A graphics calculator is essential for this learning programme. It is important that the calculator meets NZQA standards so before purchasing you should check that it is acceptable. Mathematics Statistics: NCEA Level 3 Code: MS301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Students will have completed MA201 or MS201 and demonstrated a sound understanding of the material taught in either of those courses. They will have to gained at least 14 credits, including achievement in standards 2.1 (90284), 2.2 (90285) and 2.5 (90288), preferably at Merit level or higher. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course examines statistical methods, probability, mathematical modelling and equation solving.

ASSESSMENT Level 3 Achievement and Unit Standards 8 credits assessed internally. 15 credits assessed externally. There is an exclusion against two of the standards meaning only one of them can be counted towards qualifications and the maximum credits available are 21. Media Studies: NCEA Level 3 Code: ME301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 14 credits ME201 or EN201 including at least one external standard. COURSE DESCRIPTION In this course students study the methods we use to communicate with an emphasis on how media and society influence each other. It looks at a variety of media for mass communication including film, television, print and the internet. Through a mixture of theory and practical production work, students learn to become intelligent, critical readers of what they view, hear and read. Students will closely read the work of a single film director, undertake an independent research project on censorship, study the influential “film noir” genre, learn about the New Zealand film industry and will produce their own documentary or narrative film.

Music: NCEA Level 3 Code: MU301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to allow students to gain advanced skills in their individual areas of musical strength: performance, composition, analysis, aural, harmony or arrangement. Students will use their ability to analyse and notate music more confidently and will be given the opportunity to study a wide variety of works by great composers. It is expected that students taking performance will receive 40 minutes tuition on their instrument and be of a minimum of Grade 6/7 standard or its equivalent. Composition will focus on the production of music in addition to notation and students will be expected to create audio files of their own works.

Nga Mahi a Te Rehia (Maori Performing Arts) NCEA Level 4 Code: NM402 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Year 12 and 13 students who have completed L2 Waiata, Waiata a Ringa and Haka. COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will study and perform Waiata, Waiata a Ringa, Haka-Wahine/Haka etc. There will be special emphasis on skill development, performance and tikanga. There is also a research component involved in this course.

Physical Education: NCEA Level 3 Code: PE301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits including 2.1 and/or 2.2 COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will apply and develop knowledge acquired from Year 12 physical education. To succeed, students will need excellent organisational skills and a high degree of motivation. Students will also need to have the ability to work independently. Students will spend a good deal of the course analysing and performing a sporting activity. They will also develop a personal exercise programme, research a trend or issue impacting on New Zealand society and develop and apply skills of critical thinking relating to issues in Health & Physical Education. These achievement standards are assessed by written assignments.

Physics: NCEA Level 3 Code: PH301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 15 credits including 2 of 2.3, 2.4 and 2.6; UE numeracy COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will learn to further understand the physical world around us by developing Year 12 topics in more detail. The topics of movement and energy, electromagnetism, electricity – DC, AC, light and waves, and atomic physics will be covered. Concepts will be covered theoretically and practically where possible. Emphasis will be placed on the solution of problems and the description of physical phenomena.

Science: NCEA Level 3 Code: SC 301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits in any Level 2 science or good overall achievement in NCEA Level 2. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed for those who want to gain qualifications in Science but who do not want to specialise in the fields of Biology, Chemistry or Physics. The topics studied are wide-ranging and tend towards the applications of science rather than theory. Areas of science studied will include genetic engineering, fats and oils, earthquakes and volcanoes, the electro-magnetic spectrum, sound, and radioactivity. Students will learn by refining skills, particularly understanding, planning, processing and interpreting information; identifying trends, patterns and relationships; and communicating scientific ideas.

Sports Studies: NCEA Level 3 Code: SP302 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will be assessed against the ability to apply knowledge and skills in individual and team sports. They will also be responsible for planning, administering and evaluating physical activity events and personal exercise programmes. Depending on the needs of the group, other standards may be offered.

Te Reo Maori: NCEA Level 3 Code: MR301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will develop their Te Reo Maori skills to build upon knowledge gained through NCEA Level 2. Communicative language activities are an integral part of this course. A variety of teaching strategies are used to develop skills.

Technology-Hard Materials: NCEA Level 3 Code: TH301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION This course involves students demonstrating an increased understanding of technological knowledge and skills in identifying problems within a context and being able to design and manufacture a solution to address the problem. Students will produce a visual diary that clearly will illustrate and explain how their understanding and research has informed their practice. This course leads to further studies at a tertiary institute.

Technology-Soft Materials: NCEA Level 3 Code: TS301 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will continue to develop student creativity and give them the opportunity to make their ideas a reality. They will work with their chosen client and use the design process and their practical skills and techniques to meet their client’s need. After planning and testing students will construct their best possible solution to a high quality outcome. Themes for this year are open to client need, however, advanced skills are expected to be used during construction.

Tourism: NCEA Level 3 Code: TO302 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 2 14 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will investigate the Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand as tourist destinations. In doing so they develop mapping, analytical and computing skills. The Level 3 Tourism Studies course contributes credits to NCEA Level 3, University Entrance requirements and the National Certificate in Tourism and Travel.
