This is a digital course where students will use digital cameras and develop their work using Photoshop. This is a largely practical course with one of the internal standards focused on theory. Ongoing costs throughout the year as the students purchase their own paper and film. Students need to own or have access to a digital camera with manual functions.

  • Biology: NCEA Level 2 Code: BL201 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 1 15 credits in Science, including 1.3 COURSE DESCRIPTION The course includes cell biology (how living organisms function at a cellular level), genetic variation and evolution, animal gas exchange systems and plant reproduction. Internal assessment includes studying patterns in ecosystems (this includes field work), researching a biological medical technique and how it helps humans, microscopy and researching New Zealand flora and fauna.     Chemistry: NCEA Level 2 Code: CH201 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 1 15 credits in Science, including 1.4. Achievement Standards in Numeracy are advisable. Must have studied MA101. COURSE DESCRIPTION Studying chemistry will enable students to: carry out investigations and make sense of results; understand and predict the way chemicals react; describe how people make and use chemicals. This subject has a strong emphasis on experimental work. During the course students will develop their skills in observing, recording, analysing and interpreting.     Computing: NCEA Level 2 Code: CM202 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 1 12 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION The four aspects of the course are desktop publishing (including electronic), designing and using information systems for decision making, trends and current developments in ICT and web pages.   • Drama: NCEA Level 2 Code: DM201 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 1 Drama 12 credits or previous performance experience, as supported by HOD Drama COURSE DESCRIPTION Students learn through practical individual and group work using script, devising pieces, workshops and improvisation. They will explore and develop use of the dramatic techniques of body, voice, movement and space. They will further develop their understanding of the elements of drama and learn about general theatrical conventions and the features of a specific theatre form. The course offers the opportunity for students to develop self-confidence, communication skills, problem-solving skills and general performance skills. A full scale production is the highlight of the year. Students will need to make themselves available for after school rehearsals to gain the credits for this Achievement Standard.     Economics: NCEA Level 2 Code: EC201 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 1 12 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION The main focus of this course is to give students a broad understanding of the structure and function of the New Zealand economy. The main topics are: trade inflation economic growth employment and the labour market. Students will also have the opportunity to complete a Level 2 Business Studies unit standard on marketing. A variety of resources including write-on workbooks, simulation games, media articles, videos and DVDs, computers and PowerPoint presentations are used to teach the material. NEXT STEP Economics 301

  • English: NCEA Level 2 Code: EN201 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 1 15 credits including reading log unit standard. Students should have 5 credits from external assessments. COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will learn through reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and presenting. Students will respond to a wide range of written material and learn how to use different registers, be aware of audience, improve confidence when speaking and appreciate the use and effectiveness of media. Analysing literature and language is a fundamental component of this course. In order to cope with the demands of this course, students should have some external standards from Level 1. It provides a useful background for many careers in healthcare, childcare/education, the food industry, hospitality/catering businesses and food technology. Students will learn through theory lessons and practical activities. They will further develop their knowledge and understanding about food, nutrition and the role of these in the health and well-being of themselves, others and society. The following topics will be covered; the nutritional requirements, beliefs and practices of vegetarians; the eating patterns of high energy users through studying aspects of sports nutrition; nutrition issues and dietary patterns in New Zealand; strategies for individuals and society.
