Biology: NCEA Level 2 Code: BL201 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 1 15 credits in Science, including 1.3 COURSE DESCRIPTION The course includes cell biology (how living organisms function at a cellular level), genetic variation and evolution, animal gas exchange systems and plant reproduction. Internal assessment includes studying patterns in ecosystems (this includes field work), researching a biological medical technique and how it helps humans, microscopy and researching New Zealand flora and fauna. COURSE DESCRIPTION Studying chemistry will enable students to: carry out investigations and make sense of results; understand and predict the way chemicals react; describe how people make and use chemicals. This subject has a strong emphasis on experimental work. During the course students will develop their skills in observing, recording, analysing and interpreting. Drama: NCEA Level 2 Code: DM201 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 1 Drama 12 credits or previous performance experience, as supported by HOD Drama COURSE DESCRIPTION Students learn through practical individual and group work using script, devising pieces, workshops and improvisation. They will explore and develop use of the dramatic techniques of body, voice, movement and space. They will further develop their understanding of the elements of drama and learn about general theatrical conventions and the features of a specific theatre form. The course offers the opportunity for students to develop self-confidence, communication skills, problem-solving skills and general performance skills. A full scale production is the highlight of the year. Students will need to make themselves available for after school rehearsals to gain the credits for this Achievement Standard. Economics: NCEA Level 2 Code: EC201 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 1 12 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION The main focus of this course is to give students a broad understanding of the structure and function of the New Zealand economy. The main topics are: trade inflation economic growth employment and the labour market. Students will also have the opportunity to complete a Level 2 Business Studies unit standard on marketing. A variety of resources including write-on workbooks, simulation games, media articles, videos and DVD’s, computers and PowerPoint presentations are used to teach the material. It provides a useful background for many careers in healthcare, childcare/education, the food industry, hospitality/catering businesses and food technology. Students will learn through theory lessons and practical activities. They will further develop their knowledge and understanding about food, nutrition and the role of these in the health and well-being of themselves, others and society. COURSE DESCRIPTION Gateway is a programme that is designed for senior students who want to develop a broader range of skills, gain industry skills and explore a career option while completing a senior school qualification. General Studies Code: GS202 ENTRY Open Entry COURSE DESCRIPTION This course offers students the opportunity to learn a range of life skills and will be both practical and theoretical. The course may include financial management such as budgeting and credit management. Employment skills such as career planning and interview techniques may be studied. Food technology may also be covered with an emphasis on providing food for and looking after children. A term may also be spent on health and the development of an action plan to enhance well-being. Units of work are presented in the form of a portfolio, researching information related to given needs or opportunities and presenting a solution in the form of drawings, models and products. It looks at a variety of media for mass communication including film, television, print and the internet but with a particular emphasis on critically understanding and producing popular narrative cinema. Through a mixture of theory and practical, production work, students learn to become intelligent, critical readers of the media they consume. Students will study how groups in society are represented in the media, a film genre, narrative theory, close reading skills and will produce their own short film using a range of technologies. Music: NCEA Level 2 Code: MU201 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS NCEA Level 1 12 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will be individually designed to maximise the strengths of each student taking part. It is intended that all students develop their skills in performance, composition and understanding notation to a higher level. Students will develop the ability to read and write music more confidently and will be given the opportunity to study works and by a range of composers. All students will study performance up to a minimum of grade 5 standard or its equivalent, receiving tuition on their instrument through school or by private arrangement. It is a diverse course that incorporates theoretical and practical learning experiences in the outdoors, classroom and in the gym.
