By Belinda Smart’

An operating theatre comprising four posts and a tarpaulin, and a surgery schedule of 30 to 45 patients a day (as opposed to her Australian average of around five) was all in a day’s work for Rachel Marsden during her recent stint in Haiti with Médecins sans Frontières (MSF).

Haiti wasn’t Rachel’s first time with MSF. In 2008/9 she’d done a stint with the NGO in Nigeria where she managed an operating theatre for emergency maternity surgery and a vaginal fistula repair program.

“Everything was challenging about that situation really. For one thing it was a culture shock. You walk into a different world, with a different language and customs. We were in a very remote part of the country and it was the first time most of the locals had seen white people. The response we got was mixed; some were scared and some were excited. Nigeria has around 140 languages and the local language was Hausa, with English as the second language. There were no interpreters. They really weren’t ready for surgery either. There was a very basic hospital and the Ministry of Health in Nigeria is very shady. Everything was very expensive and very corrupt.”

Middle Eastern Journeyby Nick & Kate

Hi, our names are Nick and Kate and we moved to Saudi Arabia in June of 2009 to work at the Prince Sultan Cardiac Centre. When we were looking into travelling overseas for work we contacted CCM and attended an information session that helped us make our decision. Our experience with CCM has been nothing but excellent. They have guided us throughout the whole process from the application, to obtaining our visas to relocating. Their support, experience and professionalism has made our journey run as smoothly as possible.

We heard a lot of mixed experiences about expat life in Saudi Arabia both before and after we had arrived here; some were positive while others were negative. We have come to understand that Saudi Arabia is what you make of it. Where else in the world do you have the opportunity to save while you see the world? Saudi Arabia is literally in the middle of everywhere. Within 6 hours you can be in the UK or 4 hours be in Africa, the choices are endless. It’s common to hear people say they are heading to Dubai or Bahrain for the weekend or Europe for the week.

With a huge expat community in Riyadh, you have the opportunity to attend any number of parties, balls and embassy functions. Due to the diversity of people here, we have met people of all nationalities and walks of life, which has given us a greater international perspective on life.

Nursing in Saudi Arabia is very different from home. We are taking everyday as it comes and at times, days can be challenging, rewarding and frustrating. After a difficult day at work, we sit back and are amazed that we are 12,000 km from home and are having a once in a lifetime experience, meeting great people and travelling.

We came to Saudi Arabia knowing very little about its people or its culture. We will leave this place with a greater understanding and appreciation for a country that is rich in history and culture and deeply rooted in tradition. Saudi Arabia is truly the last Forbidden Kingdom.
