  • Louisville Regional Jim Patterson StadiumNo. 4 Morehead State (38-20) vs. No. 1 Louisville (43-16) May 29 6 p.m. ET

    No. 4 Morehead State vs. No. 2 Bradley (35-19) or No. 3 Michigan (37-23) May 30 12 or 4 p.m.

REGIONAL REMEMBRANCESMorehead State is making its third NCAA Regional appearance in program history and its fi rst since 1983. The Eagles went 2-2 at the Michigan Regional that season, defeating Indiana State and Miami (Ohio). MSU also appeared in the 1977 Miami (Fla.) Regional, falling to Mississippi and the host team.

THE ROAD TO OMAHA STARTED IN JACKSONThe Eagles claimed their fi rst Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship since 1993. On May 23 at the Ballpark at Jackson (Tenn.). The 1993 team did not advance to the NCAA Tournament because the OVC did not have an automatic bid at that time. Morehead State was the No. 2 seed for the six-team event this year and received a fi rst-round bye. MSU defeated No. 4 Tennessee Tech 4-3 in 10 innings on May 21 before doubling up No. 6 Belmont 8-4 on Friday to reach the title game. MSU pounded out 17 hits and knocked off No. 1 Southeast Missouri 16-3 to win the championship.

A YEAR TO REMEMBERMorehead State, which fi nished Ohio Valley Conference play 20-10, is 38-20 overall heading into the NCAA Regional. The overall wins and league victories are both school records. Morehead States overall winning percentage (.655) is its best since going 28-11 (.718) in 1976. The Eagles lost in the fi nale of the conference tournament that year.

ON A ROLLMorehead State, which started the year 11-13, has won 27 of its last 34 contests. The Eagles, who began OVC play 3-7, fi nished their league slate by winning 17 of 20. The Eagles did not drop an OVC series after being swept March 20-22 at Belmont. From that point on, MSU rolled to series victories over Eastern Kentucky (2-1), UT Martin (3-0), SIU Edwardsville (3-0), Austin Peay (2-1), Eastern Illinois (2-1), Jacksonville State (3-0) and Murray State (2-1).

HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTIONMorehead State has improved by 22 wins from 2013 to 2015 (16-40 to 38-20). The Eagles improved by 10 OVC victories from 2013 to 2015 (10-20 to 20-10). MSU also notched 11 more home wins in the two-year span (5-9 to 16-6), while picking up 10 more true road victories (6-25 to 16-12).

WHAT A YEAR FOR MR. ROBINSONSenior catcher Chris Robinson was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, becoming the eighth player in program history to earn the leagues highest individual accolade and the fi rst from MSU since Lance Seasor in 2005. Robinson has also been named a Fourth-Team All-American by College Sports Madness. He leads all league players in batting average (.412), hits (98), runs (77) and total bases (160), ranks second in triples (5) and third in doubles (25) and RBI (69). Robinson is just two hits shy of becoming only the sixth player in OVC history to reach 100 hits.

TALKING POSTSEASON AWARDSMorehead State and Jacksonville State were the only OVC schools to take home nine offi cial league postseason awards in 2015. The Eagles were highlighted by Coach of the Year Mike McGuire and Player of the Year Chris Robinson. MSU had two on the fi rst team (Kane Sweeney and Robinson), four on the second squad (senior shortstop Robby Spencer, senior left fi elder Nick Newell, senior right fi elder Brandon Rawe and sophomore starting pitcher Luke Humphreys) and two on the all-newcomer team (sophomore second baseman Braxton Morris and freshman relief pitcher Brent Stoneking). In addition, College Sports Madness honored McGuire as the Coach of the Year. Newell, Rawe, Robinson, Spencer and Sweeney were named to the All-OVC First-team, and sophomore center fi elder Ryan Kent was on the second-team.

TWO TO WATCHChris Robinson has been listed on the offi cial Dick Howser Trophy Watch List, honoring the nations top Division I player. Earlier this year, he was on the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, given to the nations top Division I catcher, but did have enough games as the catcher to remain on the fi nal list. Robby Spencer is currently on the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, honoring the nations best shortstop.

SERIES STUFFMorehead State trails 44-35 in the all-time series with Louisville. The teams played every season from 1999-2014, and the Cardinals have claimed 14 straight meetings. MSU and Bradley have only met once, with the Braves defeating the Eagles 13-4 in 2011 in Knoxville, Tenn. MSU and Michigan have never played any games other than the two contests won by the Wolverines in the 1983 NCAA Regional.

MORE GAMES THAN EVERFridays NCAA Regional game versus Louisville will be Morehead States 59th contest this year. That will set a school single-season record for most games. The current mark is 58 in 1996.

THE NATIONS BEST OFFENSEMSU currently leads the nation in seven off ensive categories. MSU tops all 295 teams ranked in batting average (.335), hits (721), doubles, (169), doubles per game (2.91), slugging percentage (.523), runs (499) and runs per game (8.6).

MR. ROBINSONS RECORD CHASEChris Robinson, who has played catcher and outfi eld this season, has a chance to set two Morehead State single-season records. Robinson has collected 98 hits, which ties teammate Brandon Rawes record set last year. He has also scored 77 runs and needs just two to match Bubba Lavenders school standard of 79 set in 2002.

MONEYBALL -- ALL HE DOES IS GET ON BASESenior fi rst baseman Kane Sweeney leads the Ohio Valley Conference with a 35-game reached-base streak. The last time Sweeney did not reach base was March 24 at Northern Kentucky. A large factor in his on-base percentage of .483, which ranks third in the OVC, is his team-leading 52 walks. Sweeney also holds the MSU career record for free passes with 147. Sweeney holds the single-season record for plate appearances with 290 this season and his 284 plate appearances last season rank second.

DOUBLE THE FUNMorehead State owns a school and Ohio Valley Conference single-season record 169 doubles. Nick Newell has established the MSU single-season mark with 28 two-baggers and is one away from tying the OVC single-season record held by Austin Peays Ryan Bennett (1996) and Tennessee Techs Chad Oberacker (2010). Chris Robinson (25), Brandon Rawe (24) and Robby Spencer (21) have all clubbed more than 20.

GLAD WE HAVE ALL THESE GUYSMorehead States top seven hitters own a .336 batting average or better. No other OVC team had more than three hitters at that level. In fact, MSUs seventh-ranked hitter would lead four other OVC clubs.

UNSUNG HEROSenior designated hitter Clayton Meyer was 1-for-12 (.083) on the season prior to a pinch-hit game-winning single at Austin Peay on April 26. Since that time, he garnered a spot in the starting batting order and hit 22-for-45 (.489). In the 14-game span, he recorded seven multi-hit games and was named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Hitter of the Week on May 5.

HES THE MVPSophomore third baseman Alex Stephens was named OVC Tournament Most Valuable Player after batting .500 (7-for-14) in the three games. Stephens missed nearly two months (19 games) with a hand injury before returning on May 8 at Jacksonville State. Since that game, he has batted .461 (18-for-39) with 14 RBI.

GOING THE DISTANCEJunior Craig Pearcy fi red his fi rst nine-inning complete game in 59 Morehead State appearances last Friday against Belmont in the OVC Tournament. The right-hander, who was making his eighth start of the season after 11 relief appearances, improved to 4-4 with the win. He allowed three earned runs, three walks and four hits while striking out seven in a 125-pitch performance. Pearcy retired 13 straight batters from the fi rst through fi fth innings.

GOOD LUKE CHARMRight-hander Luke Humphreys has seven victories in 14 starts, marking the most wins by an MSU starting pitcher since the 2005 season. In his last eight starts, he has completed six innings or more and is 5-1.

HERE TO SAVE THE DAYThe Morehead State pitching staff has set a school record with 18 saves this season. Craig Pearcy leads the way with fi ve, while six other hurlers have been credited with at least one save. Junior right-handers Tyler Keele and Aaron Goe have become the primary closers, combining for six saves. Goe, who was named All-OVC as a freshman in 2012, missed nearly two full seasons with a recurring injury before returning on Feb. 13 at San Diego.

CALL THE CABLE GUYSophomore left-hander Cable Wright has established a school record with 31 relief appearances in 2015. Morgan Cirbo (2012) and Louie Andrew (1995) held the previous school standard of 29.

COACHING STAFF INFORMATIONMike McGuire, who guided Lander (S.C.) and Louisburg (N.C.) to school-record win totals, is in his third season as Morehead States head coach. His MSU record is 83-88 (.482), but he has led MSU to a 67-48 (.582) mark the last two seasons. Adam Brown is in his third season on the staff and has added recruiting coordinator to his duties. Graham Johnson is in his fourth season and mentors the Eagle pitching staff . PJ McIntee, who helped guide Southeastern (Iowa) to the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series in 2014, is in his fi rst year on the staff . McGuire coaches in the third-base box, while McIntee is the fi rst-base coach.

CONGRATS TO THE SKIPPERMike McGuire and his wife, Angela, welcomed their third daughter to the world on Friday, May 22 at 11:50 p.m. ET, just hours after MSU advanced to the OVC Tournament championship game. The McGuire family newborn, Sarah, joins daughters Courtney and Sydney.

LEAGUE SUCCESS AT THE NCAA LEVELOVC teams have won at least one NCAA Regional game in fi ve of the last eight years, including reaching the championship round in two of the past three years.

  • Head Coach Mike McGuire Third season at Morehead State Third-base coach Mike McGuire, who served as the pitching coach at Morehead State in 1995 and 1996, is in his third season as head coach of the Eagles. He returned to MSU prior to the 2013 season. McGuire has led Morehead State to a historic season in 2015. The Eagles have posted school records for overall wins (38) and Ohio Valley Conference victories (20). MSU also captured its first league tournament title since 1993 and advanced to NCAA Regional play for the first time since 1983. In 2014, under McGuire's leadership, Morehead State defeated nationally-ranked Kentucky and Indiana.

The first season of his second stint saw the Eagles post a 46-18 mark and advance to the finals of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional. In six seasons, he coached single-season and career record holders in nearly every statistical category. While coaching the offensive aspect of the game, his hitters established single-season team marks for hits, home runs and total bases. McGuire served as head coach at Louisburg in 2012. He led the Hurricanes to a school-record 52 wins and the programs first-ever No. 1 National Junior College Athletic Association national ranking. Louisburg also constructed a school-record 27-game winning streak. He led the OVC with 20 multi-RBI games this season and was second in the league with 27 multi-hit contests. Robinson enters the postseason with a season-high 13-game hitting streak. Defensively, Robinson committed just two errors in 274 chances and threw out 11 base runners attempting to steal. He began the season on the Johnny Bench Award Watch List (given to the nation's top catcher) and was recently named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy (given to the top player nationally by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association). In just his third season at the helm, McGuire led Morehead State to its most overall (35) and conference victories (20) in program history. MSU finished second in the OVC standings, its highest finish since placing second in 1994. During the year, the team put together the longest winning streak in MSU history (11 games) and finished the season by going 24-7 over its final 31 games (since March 28). Along the way, the Eagles scored three wins at nationally-ranked San Diego, recorded their first-ever sweep at Jacksonville State and concluded the OVC schedule with wins in 17 of their final 20 contests. McGuire put together an offense that leads the country in batting average (.334), scoring (8.6 runs/game), total runs (471), hits (680), doubles/game (2.93) and slugging (.523). McGuire is the fourth Morehead State skipper to be named OVC Coach of the Year and first since the 1986 season. The previous MSU coaches to take home the honor include Rex Chaney (1964, 1965, 1966), Sonny Allen (1969, 1973) and Steve Hamilton (1977, 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986), all of who are in the OVC Hall of Fame. Sweeney, a native of Millstadt, Ill., leads the league with 51 walks and set the MSU career record for free passes (146) during the year. He ranks third in the conference with 13 home runs and enters the OVC Tournament batting .346 in all games and .397 against league foes. Sweeney also ranks second in the league with a .485 on-base percentage. He has produced 22 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI efforts. He currently sports a team-best 32-game reached-base streak.

  • Spencer, from El Paso, Texas, ranks third in the conference with 66 RBI while batting .344 overall. He has clubbed 21 doubles and eight home runs while producing a .554 slugging percentage. Spencer owns 23 multi-hit performances and 18 multi-RBI games. He posted the team's longest hitting streak (21) during the season, which was also the longest in McGuire's tenure. Newell, a native of Dyersburg, Tenn., established the school single-season record for doubles (27). Newell is batting .374 overall and hit .385 against league pitching. Newell has belted seven home runs and collected 57 RBI. He ties Robinson for the team-high in multi-hit games with 27. Rawe, who set the MSU single-season record for hits last year, has 85 hits this season to rank third in the conference. The Matthews, N.C., native has legged out 22 doubles, scored 65 runs and has 46 RBI. He is hitting .349 overall and batted .379 in league tilts. Rawe has also turned in 25 multi-hit efforts. Humphreys, from Dickson, Tenn., finished the regular season 7-2 (improving to 12-4 for his career). Humphreys has pitched 76.1 innings in 13 starts this season and recorded 60 strikeouts. The seven wins are the most by an MSU pitcher since 2010 and the most by an Eagle starter since 2005. Morris, a native of Albertville, Ala., is batting .316 and has scored 41 runs in his first collegiate campaign. Among his 50 hits are eight doubles and one home run. He has also recorded 23 RBI. Stoneking, a native of Winchester, Ky., enters the postseason with a 4-1 record and 4.70 ERA. He has struck out 29 batters in 44.1 innings, and opponents are hitting just .274 against him.

  • Baseball Wins OVC Tournament, Headed to NCAA Regional JACKSON, Tenn. -- One more trophy will be added to the Morehead State athletic department case. The second-seeded MSU baseball team finished off a perfect run through the 2015 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday evening with a 16-3 victory over top-seeded Southeast Missouri at The Ballpark at Jackson. Morehead State (38-20), which has won 27 of its last 34 games, captured its first OVC Tournament title since 1993 and will appear in an NCAA Regional for the third time in program history. The Eagles will find out their regional site on Monday when the 64-team bracket is revealed at Noon ET on ESPNU. The public is invited to join the team at Buffalo Wild Wings for the selection show watch party. "Heading into the season, I thought we had a team good enough to play in an NCAA Regional," Head Coach Mike McGuire said. "We had so many key contributors coming back, with lots of accomplished position players and some good arms. We really struggled during a two-week stretch in March but have played quality baseball in all three phases since then. Our veterans have provided great leadership, on and off the field, and got us back on track when things weren't going well for this club." The Eagles finished 3-0 in the tournament, knocking off fourth-seeded Tennessee Tech on Thursday and sixth-seeded Belmont on Friday. MSU set single-season program records for wins and conference wins (20) this year. Morehead State's overall winning percentage (.655) is its best since going 28-11 (.718) in 1976, and the program has improved by 22 wins from 2013 to 2015 (16-40 to 38-20). "I am incredibly proud of our players, assistant coaches and everyone associated with Morehead State baseball," McGuire said. "This championship is great for our university and program. A lot of hard work went into this. It definitely didn't happen overnight. When I took the job (three years ago), I said we needed to complete nationally and go to NCAA Regionals. To be honest, I wanted us to be disappointed if we didn't win the conference tournament and advance to a regional." The 13-run victory margin was the largest in a championship game since 1994. The Redhawks, who have been the top seed in the OVC Tournament two straight seasons, finished their campaign at 36-23. SEMO defeated Morehead State twice during the three-game regular-season series. "I have a lot of respect for Southeast Missouri's program, but I knew the results could be different because we are a much-improved team," McGuire added. "We played SEMO at the very beginning of the conference schedule when we were still trying to figure things out. They have a lot of terrific players, but thought we would have a chance if we stayed in the winner's bracket and they had to wear themselves down in the loser's bracket. That may have been the case tonight." Morehead State sophomore third baseman Alex Stephens was named tournament Most Valuable Player. He went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs in the finale and concluded the week hitting 7-for-14 (.500) with six runs batted in. Stephens became the second MSU player to be named tournament MVP, joining Jason Chandler in 1993. Junior pitcher Craig Pearcy, senior catcher Chris Robinson, senior first baseman Kane Sweeney and senior designated hitter Clayton Meyer also earned spots on the All-Tournament Team. MSU pounded out 17 hits in the title game, its 37th game this season in double-digits. Sweeney belted a grand slam in the sixth inning, his team-best 14th round-tripper this year. Senior right fielder Brandon Rawe added a two-run homer in the eighth and both finished with four RBI. Robinson tied the program single-season hit record (held by Rawe in 2014) with his 98th.

  • The Eagles, who lead the nation in doubles, batting average, hits and slugging percentage, added four more doubles to up their season total to a school-record 169. They have eclipsed the previous double mark by 33 (136 in 2005). MSU jumped out to an 8-0 advantage after two frames, scoring five times in the opening inning, and tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth. The Eagles erupted for four more in the sixth and finished off the scoring with Rawe's two-run homer. Freshman right-hander Brent Stoneking (5-1) tossed the final 4.1 innings and allowed just three hits and no earned runs. The Morehead State pitching staff surrendered just 15 hits and seven earned runs in the three tournament games. The loss was pinned on SEMO starter Matthew Wade (3-2). The NCAA Tournament features 16 four-team regionals. All regionals are double elimination. "None of our players have NCAA Regional experience, but I think we can still be competitive because of the schedule we've played," McGuire added. "Part of my scheduling philosophy has been to play multiple top-100 teams from power conferences each season. We've definitely challenged ourselves the past two years with opponents like Louisville, Kentucky, Tennessee, San Diego, Clemson, Indiana, Ohio State and others. I hope those environments and experiences help us next weekend."
