Message from the Co-Chairs

History of NBSC Since its inception in 1993, the National Business School Conference has been one of the premiere business student conferences in Canada. NBSC is an annual 3-day conference held in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This event brings the next generation of business leaders to Winnipeg including Students’ Association executives and JDC West Captains from Canadian Business Schools. NBSC creates a forum for these students to share and discuss challenges currently facing them, as well as be inspired by local business leaders. Each year, delegates return home from this conference with the knowledge and tools to improve and create value within their own student organizations. They also come away with the skills to handle tough and challenging situations, that is gained through meaningful discussion and sessions with their peers on current topics chosen each year by the executive committee that will be relevant and impactful.

Business Banquet The Commerce Business Banquet notoriously provides good food, entrainment and networking opportunities, and this year will be no exception. This event is considered the Commerce Students' Association premier event of the year, the Business Banquet brings together over 700 commerce students, company representatives, and an esteemed keynote speaker. Past Business Banquet keynote speakers have included successful entrepreneurs such as the Wish of a Lifetime Founder and Integrate Co-Founder Jeremy Bloom, The Apprentice's Bill Rancic, Boston Pizza Founder and Dragon on CBC's Dragon's Den Jim Treliving, and Free the Children Co-Founder Marc Kielburger.

Break Out Sessions Session 1: Internal Conflict Prevention & Resolution We all know it: most business students have the "type A" personality, which is great for getting things done - but sometimes it can cause personalities to clash. No matter how well your council gets along, there will always be some conflict between people. The best way to deal with it is to plan ahead for it and have strategies to deal with it when it happens. The objective of this session is to give delegates new tactics for dealing with internal conflict on their council. Session 2: Council-Student Body Dynamics It's a problem that many tight-knit student councils deal with: the idea of the coun cil being a "clique" that is not open or outgoing towards students not on council. Your council must find ways to be as outgoing and friendly as possible to all students - after all; the end goal is for your council to provide services to the general student body. This session will discuss any specific issues that your council deals with in this area, and attempt to come up with solutions and strategies to improve relationships with the general student body. Session 3: Position-Specific Sessions Upon registration, delegates will choose one of the following sessions that is most relevant to their role. This session will take place over 3 hours on Friday afternoon. JDC West – This session is for all JDC West captains and the OC of JDC West 2014 and will take place over both days of breakout sessions. President VP Academic VP Events VP External VP Internal VP Marketing Session 4: Transitioning Your Position When it is time to pass the torch, the single most important piece of information you can give to your successor is a transition report. Preparing one is easy, but preparing an excellent report that is informative and clear in explanation is easier said than done. This session will allow delegates to discuss the importance of a good transition report, and useful tips and tricks on how to make sure everything is included and is clear and concise.
