This month’s edition of ForeverYoung will focus on New Year’sresolutions that we make and break.

According to Time.com, these arethe top 10 commonly broken NewYear’s resolutions:

• Lose weight and get fit• Quit smoking• Learn something new• Eat healthier and diet• Get out of debt and save money• Spend more time with family• Travel to new places• Be less stressed• Volunteer• Drink less

In preparation for the New Year, Ihave talked with experts in different

fields that highlight those resolu-tions one by one.

As I talked to the different profes-sionals, each of them had somethingsimilar to say; that it was easier toaccomplish goals and resolutions ifyou do it with help and supportfrom a friend.

So reach out and find someonewho is struggling with somethingyou are, whether it is quittingsmoking, weight loss or eatinghealthier. Having a friend there tohelp motivate you, and vice versa, will move you forward.

Now, Mr. Traxler brings Bob Ross’“wet-on-wet” painting technique toBrevard, by teaching classes all overthe county.

The late Bob Ross was host of thepublic television series “The Joy ofPainting,” which ran from 1983 to1995 and still appears in reruns inmany broadcast areas. During eachhalf-hour segment, Ross wouldinstruct viewers in the art of oilpainting using a quick-study oilpainting technique that kept colorsto a minimum and broke paintingsdown into simple steps that anyonecould follow.

In Rockledge, Mr. Traxler will offerBob Ross painting classes from 10:30a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 and19, at Riverwalk Nature Center, located at Riverwalk: A Family Park,5355 US Hwy 1, in Rockledge.

“I love music and love shaking mybooty, so I thought, why not give it atry? After a month of Zumba classes, Ihad already lost 30 pounds.”

— Vickie Mathis

BREVARD — At her heaviest,Vickie Mathis weighed 410 pounds. She suffered from constantheadaches and experienced pain inher back, legs and joints.

The Port St. John resident knewshe needed to make a change.

“My journey began when the doc-tor tried to hospitalize me a yearand a half ago,” she said. “I wasalready on medications for hyper-tension, and I was a borderline dia-betic when I made this visit to heroffice. She wanted to hospitalizeme immediately… I begged her toallow me one month to work on thison my own. On that day, I decidedthat my life would be differentbecause I was going to do thingsdifferently.”

Ms. Mathis’ first steps to living ahealthier life began with walking.

“I first started walking around myblock when it was dark outside,”she said. “I was too ashamed ofpeople seeing me in the daylight.”

Then, a friend suggested she tryZumba, a Latin-inspired form ofexercise dance.

“I had heard of Zumba, but Inever even thought about trying itbecause it was a group exerciseactivity,” she said. “However, I lovemusic and love shaking my booty,so I thought, why not give it a try? After a month of Zumba classes, Ihad already lost 30 pounds.”

Today, Ms. Mathis weighs 258pounds – a weight-loss differenceof 152 pounds since August 2011.

She said her life has changedtremendously. Before, Ms. Mathiswould eat candy and ice creamwithout hesitation; now, she makesconscious decisions about thetypes of food she intakes. Andrather than being the timid womanin the back of the classroom atZumba, now, she is the instructor.

“Zumba has impacted my lifeimmensely,” she said. “I don’t look

for parking spaces closest to thedoor of a business anymore. I cannow reach down and tie my ownshoes. I can stand straight up andsee my toes. The simplest thingshave become the hugest compo-nents of my life.”

Rosalind Prescott, who teachesZumba classes at the Wickham ParkSenior Center in Melbourne, saidthat Zumba also changed her life.

After being a competitive colle-giate athlete in basketball and anational karate champion post-col-lege, sports was a huge part of herlife. But a back injury put her out ofsports and fitness for two years.

“I gained more than 35 poundsand started to fall into depression,”Ms. Prescott said. “I found my firstZumba class being offered at asmall gym in Rockledge. Although itwas hard because I was out ofshape and my muscles were notstrong, it was the only exercise thatI could modify to my level, and thatI could do, which did not hurt myback. Plus, the energy, upbeat andexciting music and instructor weresuch good motivation to make mewant to try again and come back formore.”

Ms. Prescott said that Zumbaclasses are beneficial because theworkouts engage many muscles, often while the participant is bliss-fully unaware that he or she isincorporating traditional fitnessmoves like squats and lunges intodancing, which tones and tightensthe body.

“The class gets your heart beat upso you can burn from 400 to 1,000calories per class with one hourwhizzing by,” Ms. Prescott said. “Iusually burn around 800 calorieswhen I teach a class. Workouts thatfeel like work are hard to get excitedabout. But Zumba is so enjoyable

you actually want to keep comingback.”

For those looking to start a lightfitness regimen, Ms. Mathis advisespeople to invest in a good pair ofshoes that will offer the support theyneed to begin. In addition to Zumba, she recommends walking or swim-ming, as they are both safe, moder-ate exercises for overweight individ-uals.

As for food consumption, Ms.Mathis said she steers clear ofbreads, pasta, rice, potatoes andanything with sugar in it. Her dietconsists of mainly protein: meat, vegetables, cheese and eggs. And forthe first eight weeks of her weight-loss routine, she only consumedwater.

“Reward yourself once a week withthat cup of coffee that you gave up,”she said. “Keep your mind on what

you eat. My mind is pondering foodall day long. I’m still addicted tofood, but I only eat what will be ben-eficial to my health.”

Ms. Mathis said to overcome over-weight and unhealthy lifestyles, thehardest step to take is the first one:making a commitment to oneself tolose weight and get healthy.

“It has to be a personal decision,”she said.

Now, she said she feels the best shehas ever felt in her life.

“At age 43, I feel somewhere around25 years old,” she said. “I am so proudof the plus-size woman that I am.”

Ms. Mathis teaches Zumba classes

Monday through Friday at bothCome On Get Happy in Cocoa Vil-lage and Marta’s Dance Studio onMerritt Island.

“I use Zumba as a tool to reach outto people – not only the overweightor obese, but to anyone who is look-ing to overcome any obstacles intheir lives. The bottom line is that

the mind has to be made up. Youhave to focus on what you want, anddon’t lose focus, even if you go offtrack for a spell,” she said.

On March 15, Ms. Mathis will setsail on a Zumba at Sea cruise onRoyal Caribbean’s Monarch of theSeas. Those interested in going alongfor the ride, which will include vari-ous opportunities for Zumba, canobtain more information by contact-ing organizer Jeanne Bernard at(321) 777-8850 [email protected].

BREVARD — While many clubs, businesses and organizations held par-ties throughout the past holiday sea-son, one organization centered its holi-day luncheon around giving back tothe community.

The Seaside Piecemakers Quilt Club,a Satellite Beach-based group of quil-ters who use their craft to serve thecommunity, handmade 33 lap quiltsfor children in need. At the group’s holi-day luncheon in December, the quiltswere given to Brevard Recue Mission, anonprofit aiming to break the cycle ofhomelessness among mothers andchildren in the area, as well as itemsthat the organization were in need of.

“(Brevard Rescue Mission) hasalmost run out of personal hygiene andcleaning items from their pantry,” saidJudy Pacificador, publicity chair-woman for the Seaside PiecemakersQuilt Club. “The quilts will be given tothe children for comfort during theupcoming colder months.”

Founded in 1981, the Seaside Piece-makers Quilt Club, part of the NationalQuilting Association, has 300 quiltmakers spanning from Barefoot Bay to

Cocoa. The club meets regularly withinvited speakers and special classes atHeritage Isle Club House on the fourthWednesday of each month, exceptNovember and December. From thisgroup, about 10 smaller Quilt Circlesmeet twice per month at several Bre-vard Public Libraries or quilt shops inthe area, where the actual quilt makingis performed.

In addition to giving back to thecommunity, members of the SeasidePiecemakers Quilt Club enjoy quiltingalongside one another.

“Members seek an environment ofsharing, encouragement, friendship, learning and community service,” Ms.Pacificador said.

She said that this year, the womenresponsible for creating the quilts forBrevard Rescue Mission had lots of fun, even while donating their own suppliesand dipping into their personal bankaccounts to complete the quilts.

“Hours upon hours of sewing, bothat the circle gathering and at home, ishard to quantify,” Ms. Pacificador said.“But the good feeling of being able tohelp a community is evident, and it is

the foremost motivation for theseladies to give of their time to the cause. That sense of reward is priceless.”

In addition to the quilts, Ms. Pacifi-cador estimated that the cash dona-tions, used to purchase items that Bre-vard Rescue Misison will needthroughout the year, added up to morethan $1,500.

Each year, the club donates items toin-need organizations at its holidayluncheons, such as Daily Bread, Gene-sis House, Hacienda Ranch and more.

“For these Seaside members, whothemselves may be on fixed incomes, their desire and generosity to con-tribute to this cause speaks volumesabout their sense of giving and good-will to all,” Ms. Pacificador said.

Currently, the Seaside PiecemakersQuilt Club is at its maximum amountof members at 300. The club invitesinterested applicants to join as spacebecomes available, via its website,www.seasidepiecemakers.com.

Health and vitality with herbsDiet, exercise and rest have

always been essential forthe maintenance of good

health. Now, more than ever, herbs are

necessary for the maintenance ofour health, especially with somuch stress and toxicity from ourenvironment. For thousands ofyears, plants have been used toincrease energy, boost theimmune system, provide nutri-tion, enhance mental clarity, increase physical stamina and toenliven the libido. There arethousands of plants that havethese abilities, but for the sake ofspace and time, I have stopped atfive.

Astragalus, as an energy tonicherb, helps the body adapt tophysical exertion and stress, andfor people with low energy, ithelps boost metabolism. It hasbeen used for more than 4,000years in China and it is still usednow as an herb to strengthen theimmune system, fighting bacteriaand viruses. Astragalus is especial-ly good for chronic weakness tothe lungs or for those who havetaken many antibiotics and arenow susceptible to infections.

Garlic also has the ability tofight bacteria that have becomeresistant to antibiotics; it alsofights viruses, fungi, Candida andyeast. One of the reasons it can dothis is because its enzymes detoxi-fy the body of carcinogens. In thecirculatory system, regular use ofgarlic can raise HDL’s, lower LDL’s,as well as lower triglyceride levels, and for many people, it helpslower blood pressure.

Turmeric, when taken regularly, acts as a powerful anti-inflamma-tory; for some it works safer andmuch better than long-term use ofcortisone because it protects theflora of the digestive system andthe liver. Studies on Turmeric haveshown it to be five times strongerthan Vitamin E in its antioxidant

properties and to be beneficial todementia and high cholesterol. Beaware that a large amount ofTurmeric inhibits blood clots; ifyou are taking anticoagulantmedications, you need to talk toyour physician.

Dandelion is a highly nutritiousplant, one that is packed withiron, making it good for anemia. As a diuretic, it removes excessfluid from the body, but providesthe needed potassium that can belost when taking pharmaceuticalwater pills. Dandelion is also usedto support the liver and gallblad-der in the removal of wasteproducts; this detoxificationprovides relief for gout, eczemaand psoriasis.

Ginseng is probably one of themost popular vitality-enhancingherbs. When used consistently,Ginseng helps the body adapt tomental and physical stress, increasing stamina and physicalperformance rejuvenating thebody, mind and spirit. As animmune booster, it helps the bodyheal faster and more efficiently, promoting longevity by increasingyour ability to resist disease. Italso enhances sexual stamina anddesire and improves memory andlearning skills by improvingcirculation throughout the body.

It’s when we are free of toxins, receiving nutrients, that weexperience energy and feel ourbest. With the amount of stressand toxicity we experience fromday to day, now, more than ever,we should be protecting ourbodies with herbs.

The well-traveled road

You’ve lost your family. You knowthey were in that small town inGeorgia or Virginia or maybe

New York, but where did they comefrom and where did they go?

This is where you go from yourtraditional genealogy research to allthose other subjects I’ve been tellingyou to study: history, geography, politics and the financial conditions ofthe times.

Read the local history and studywhat was going on when your ancestorfirst appeared in their present location. Was the area being settled by landgrants or bounty land given for militaryservice, during the 1849 Gold Rush, orthe expansion of the railroad? Wheredid the other residents come from?Chances are, your family moved withacquaintances.

Some families stayed in one area andothers moved every generation.Migration can go in almost anypattern. Sometimes everyone in the

family moved at once, taking theelderly parents with them. Often, theystayed until the parents died, then allthe children took their families andmoved south or west, looking fornewer and greener fields, either goingtogether, or scattering across thecountry.

Starting in 1850, census records willgive the birth state of each individual. This tells you if they moved from thestate where they were born. The 1870census tells if the parents were foreignborn.

By 1880, the census gives the birth-place of the parents of each person. This is valuable information in tracingthe migration of the families. It willhelp decide if it was your direct

ancestor who started migrating or wasit his parents or grandparents?

Many deeds give the home of thegrantee, or grantor, who may havemoved on before he sold the land. While traveling down the migrationroute, look at these records for yourancestor’s names. If you find theirnames, investigate thoroughly to builda case to determine if this, indeed, isyour family. Check all the records in thecounty, and compare the facts withthose you know about your family. When you determine that you aredealing with the same people, you willhave completed another link in thechain.

I can’t stress enough the importanceof researching everyone in the familywhen trying to trace a dead-end family.Never stop with just researching thehusband and wife who are your directancestors. Look at each child and whothey married. Research the wife’sparents. Each person in the family has

a story and each person and place theycame in contact with makes up a pieceof the large puzzle of this family group.

Chances are, they lived with, nextdoor to or married a relative or friendwho migrated from the same commu-nity. When you find the origin of theselateral connections, look for yourfamily in this same location.

They traveled over establishedmigration routes, from settlement tosettlement, by waterways and trails, following those who went before them. The first of these routes was a crudetrail created in the 1600s, betweenBoston and New York that became theBoston Post Road. Over the years, thenetwork grew, connecting the coloniesfrom Maine to Georgia. Then the roadsbegan to inch westward and settlerstraveled by the combination of water-ways and trails, roads and railwaysacross the country.

You will have to search the records all

Residents prefer classic comedyCOMEDYCOCOA BEACH — The diverse age

range of the population of CocoaBeach, Florida, has lead to an interest-ing discovery about audience prefer-ences. When the Magic & MayhemComedy Magic Show opened at theInternational Palms Resort and Con-ference Center last May, everyoneexpected that it would primarilyappeal to the young tourist families, who visit the beach resort during thesummer months. Nobody expectedthat the show would become a favoriteamong the older residents and “snow-birds,” who come to Cocoa Beach dur-ing the winter.

“This has been a pleasant surprise,”said Art Thomas, managing producerof the show. “We set out to create agreat value for budget-conscious fami-lies and discovered that many seniorsappreciate a great value as much asanyone.”

The Magic & Mayhem Dinner andShow creates value for visitors by com-bining a full barbecue dinner buffet, with a hilarious comedy magic showafter dinner to create a great night outfor families, couples, empty nesters orseniors.

“Seniors seem to have a particularaffinity for the classic comedy style ofthe show,” Mr. Thomas said. “Theyappreciate that comedy does not haveto be raucous or off-color to be funny.By keeping it clean, we not only keepthe show appropriate for families withchildren, but also make it more appeal-ing to anyone who enjoys a comedyshow, but finds that much contempo-rary comedy is brash, vulgar and toooften offensive.”

Now in its seventh-consecutivemonth of weekly Saturday night shows, the arrival of additional snowbirdsbodes well for the ongoing production.

“We get excellent word-of-mouthreferrals,” he added. “Once people seethe show, they tell their friends andneighbors about it, and often comeback with family or friends. Plus, wehave the best food of any of the dinnershow attractions in all of Central Flori-da.”

This also appeals to seniors andkeeps the value high.

The show is presented every Satur-day evening at the International PalmsResort and Conference Center onAtlantic Avenue in Cocoa Beach. Din-ner seating is anytime from 5:30 to 6:30p.m. in the Captain’s Grill Buffet, withshow time at 7:15 p.m. in the adjacentCommander’s Club Lounge.

along the routes you think yourfamily may have taken. Sometimesthe trip was a steady move from pointA to point B. Many times the familieswould find a locale they liked andstop for a generation or two, thenmove on.

As I indicated earlier, some familymembers will move and some willstay, and you will find them movingback and forth, intermarrying withfriends and cousins from eachlocation. That is why it is importantto research each person to pick upthese relationships. It can help youfind the missing family member youneed.

All you need is to head down theroad, stopping to inspect the ceme-teries and court houses, and remem-ber, if you listen carefully, you justmight hear someone say, “Here I am.”

For more January firsts than I canremember, I have woken withfirm resolve to cure all the ills

that I have allowed to permeate mylife.

Excesses of all sorts, relationships, jobs and more were all fair game inmy firm quest to make my world abetter place. Discovering that I ammy own worst enemy pertaining tolimits of any kind I have decided thisyear will be different.

I am making a list of non-resolu-tions and would like to share a fewwith you. Please feel free to join me,where applicable, and share with meany that you are doing this year orhave benefited from in the past.

I resolve not to drive to work with

my head so full of reports anddeadlines that I don’t pull off theroad to stand in awe and thank thebig guy for the panoramic wonder ofa whole sky filled with pinks, bluesand oranges showing His promise ofanother day.

And not to try to convince the niceofficer that if the lawmakers wouldhave seen this sunrise they wouldsurely have made a ‘sunrise watchinglane’ instead of an emergency laneand I was just ahead of my time.

I resolve not to be so rushed that Idon’t take the time to share God’swonder with a granddaughterserving our country in a cold, bleakpart of the U.S. through the won-

drous technology of the phone thingthat my children insisted I learn howto use. And not to get upset when shecalls me for the fourth time to tell meI sent her another picture of my foot.

I resolve not to keep an eye on myfavorite TV show when a grandchildgoes out of her way to come and seeher Grammy and Poppi after nightschool, but to turn the blasted idiotbox off and play 50s music while westir up gingerbread because it makesher laugh. And try to come up with abetter explanation of “Love PotionNumber Nine.”

I resolve not to dodge but toanswer the phone cheerfully, listenintently and find comforting wordsevery time a friend calls, even thoughI know the call will result in 20minutes of her bemoaning her lifesince she broke up with a boyfriend. And never to utter the words, “I toldyou not to go out with a guy that has

nine hamsters all named Bootsy!”I resolve not to speed up so I can

get past the kitten that runs to meetme as I power walk past her house, but to stop and enjoy a tiny soul thatonly wants a moment of attention. But refrain from sitting in the middleof the sidewalk and playing with heruntil it’s too dark to continue mywalk.

I resolve to stop obsessing over thenumbers on my scale and justconcentrate on getting more exer-cise, eating healthier and cutting mysugar intake. I will begin thismoment Or perhaps after the last ofthe leftover pie is gone (I can’t beexpected to throw it away can I?).And there’s a whole tin of sugarcookies baked by my favorite littlepeople. And all those candy canes. This one may be a tad difficult…

I pray everyone reading this andtheir families has a blessed and

The latest, newest treadmill calledthe AlterG, encircles the body fromthe waist down, with differential airpressure technology. Therapists canactually calibrate the precise un-weighing of the body up to 80 per-cent. This means that if a patientcan’t walk, due to pain with weightbearing, then weight is taken out ofthe equation. It’s also connected to a

viewing monitor to allow the thera-pist to give instant cues for fasterlearning through the monitor’s feed-back. Because its low-impact, manywould say it’s an improvement forseniors who want a more comfort-able exercise experience.
